1 Thessalonians 1 - Philemon

Paul and Silvanus and Timothy, To the Church of the Thessalonians, which is in God the Father and in the Lord Jesus Christ: Grace be with you, and peace, from God our Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ.

We always give God thanks for you all, making mention of you in our prayers,

unceasingly remembering your work of faith and diligent love and the patience of your hope in our Lord Jesus Christ (in the sight of God our Father),

knowing - beloved brothers - that you are the Elect of God.

For our Gospel did not come to you in word only, but in power also and in the Holy Ghost and much certainty (as you know how we behaved among you for your sakes).

And you became followers of us and of the Lord and received the Word in much affliction, with joy of the Holy Ghost,

so that you were examples to all believers in Macedonia and in Achaia.

For the Word of the Lord has resounded from you - not only in Macedonia and in Achaia - but in all quarters. Your faith toward God has gone out, so that we need not say anything.

For they themselves tell of how we approached you and how you turned to God from idols to serve the living and true God,

10 and to look for His Son from Heaven - Whom He raised from the dead – Who is Jesus; Who delivers us from the wrath to come.

For you yourselves know, brothers, that our coming to you was not in vain.

But even after we had suffered before (and were insulted at Philippi, as you know) we were emboldened by God to speak the Gospel of God to you with much struggle.

For our encouragement was not in error, nor of impurity, nor by deceit.

But just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the Gospel, so we speak - not as those who please man, but God, Who examines our hearts.

Nor did we ever at any time use flattering words (as you know), nor cloaked covetousness. God is our witness.

Nor did we seek the praise of man - either by you or by others - when we might have imposed on you as the Apostles of Christ.

But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherishes her children.

Having this affection toward you, it was our pleasure to have shared with you not only the Gospel of God, but also our own souls, because you were dear to us.

For you remember, brothers, our labor and travail. For we labored day and night (so that we would not be a burden to any of you) and preached to you the Gospel of God.

10 You and God are witnesses of how holily, and justly, and unblameably we behaved among you who believe.

11 As you know how we exhorted and comforted and testified to every one of you (as a father to his children).

12 So that you would walk worthy of God, Who has called you to His kingdom, and Glory.

13 For this reason also, we thank God unceasingly that when you received the Word of God (which you heard from us) you did not receive it as the word of man, but as it really is - the Word of God - which also works in you who believe.

14 For brothers, you have become followers of the churches of God (which in Judea are in Christ Jesus) because you have also suffered the same things from your own countrymen as they have from the Judeans,

15 who both killed the Lord Jesus and their own Prophets and have driven us out. And they do not please God and are contrary to all mankind

16 and forbid us to preach to the Gentiles (so that they might be saved), always fulfilling their sins. But wrath has come upon them to the utmost.

17 But since, brothers, we were kept from you for a season (as far as sight, but not in the heart), we were eager to see your face with great desire.

18 Therefore, we would have come to you (I Paul, at least once or twice) but Satan hindered us.

19 For what is our hope or joy or crown of rejoicing? Is it not even you, in the presence of our Lord Jesus Christ at His coming?

20 Yes! You are our glory and joy!

Therefore, since we could endure it no longer, we thought it good to remain at Athens alone;

and have sent Timothy, our brother and minister of God and our fellow laborer in the Gospel of Christ, to establish you and to comfort you regarding your faith;

so that no one would be disturbed by these afflictions. For you yourselves know that we are appointed to this.

For truly we told you before (when we were with you) that we would suffer tribulations even as it happened. And you know it.

For this reason, when I could no longer bear it, I sent him. So that I might know of your faith, lest the tempter had tempted you in any way and that our labor had been in vain.

But now, lately, when Timothy came from you to us and brought us good tidings of your faith and love (and that you have good remembrance of us always, desiring to see us, as we also you),

therefore brothers, in all our affliction and necessity, we were encouraged by you through your faith.

For now if you stand fast in the Lord, we are alive!

For what thanks can we render to God for you - for all the joy with which we rejoice for your sakes before our God,

10 night and day, praying exceedingly – so that we might see your face and accomplish that which is lacking in your faith?

11 Now may God himself - even our Father - and our Lord Jesus Christ, guide our journey to you.

12 And the Lord increase you and make you abound in love toward one another, and toward all, even as we do toward you;

13 to make your hearts stable and unblameable in holiness before God, and our Father, at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ with all His saints.

Furthermore, we urge and exhort you in the Lord Jesus, brothers, that you increase more and more in how you ought to walk and to please God (as you have received from us).

For you know what Commandments we gave you by the Lord Jesus.

For this is the will of God: your sanctification. And that you should abstain from fornication;

so that every one of you should know how to possess his vessel in holiness and honor,

not in the passion of lust (as the Gentiles do, who do not know God),

so that no one oppresses or defrauds his brother in any matter. For the Lord is Avenger of all such things, as we also have told you previously, and testified.

For God has not called us to uncleanness, but to holiness.

Therefore, the one who ignores these things, does not ignore man, but God (Who has also given His Holy Spirit).

But concerning brotherly love, you do not need me to write to you. For you are taught by God to love one another.

10 And, indeed, you do so to all the brothers throughout all Macedonia. But we urge you, brothers, to increase more and more

11 and to earnestly endeavor to be quiet and mind your own business; and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you;

12 so that you may behave honorably toward those who are outside, and that you lack nothing.

13 Brothers, I would not have you be ignorant concerning those who are asleep, lest you mourn as others who have no hope.

14 For if we believe that Jesus is dead and is risen, so also will God bring with Him those who sleep in Jesus.

15 For we say this to you by the Word of the Lord: that we who live - and remain until the coming of the Lord - shall not precede those who sleep.

16 For the Lord Himself shall descend from Heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel, and with the trumpet of God. And the dead in Christ shall rise first.

17 Then shall we who live and remain be caught up with them also in the clouds, to meet the Lord in the air. And so shall we ever be with the Lord.

18 Therefore, comfort one another with these words.

But of the times and seasons, brothers, you have no need for me to write to you.

For you yourselves know perfectly that the Day of the Lord shall come as a thief in the night.

For when they shall say “Peace and safety”, then sudden destruction shall come upon them, as labor upon a woman with child. And they shall not escape.

But you, brothers, are not in darkness, so that that day shall come on you as a thief.

You are all children of light, and children of the Day. We are not of the night, nor of darkness.

Therefore let us not sleep as others do. But, let us watch and be sober.

For those who sleep, sleep in the night. And those who are drunk, are drunk in the night.

But let us who are of the Day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love and the hope of salvation for a helmet.

For God has not appointed us to wrath, but to obtain salvation by means of our Lord Jesus Christ;

10 Who died for us so that - whether we wake or sleep - we would live together with Him.

11 Therefore, exhort one another. And edify one another, just as you are doing.

12 Now, we urge you, brothers, that you acknowledge those who labor among you and are over you in the Lord and admonish you.

13 Hold them in singular love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

14 We desire, brothers, that you admonish those who are out of order, comfort the faint-hearted, bear with the weak, be patient toward all.

15 See that no one recompenses evil for evil to anyone. But always follow that which is good, both toward yourselves and toward all.

16 Rejoice always.

17 Pray continually.

18 Give thanks in all things. For this is the will of God toward you in Christ Jesus.

19 Do not quench the Spirit.

20 Do not ignore prophecy.

21 Test all things. Keep that which is good.

22 Abstain from any appearance of evil.

23 Now, may the very God of Peace sanctify you completely. And may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless, until the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

24 Faithful is He Who calls you. He will also do it.

25 Pray for us, brothers.

26 Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

27 I charge you in the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brothers.

28 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you, Amen.

(The first Epistle to the Thessalonians, written from Athens.)

Paul and Silvanus, and Timothy, To the Church of the Thessalonians, which is in God our Father, and in the Lord Jesus Christ:

Grace be with you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

We ought to thank God always for you, brothers (as is fitting), because your faith grows exceedingly, and the love of every one of you toward each other abounds.

So that we ourselves rejoice over you in the churches of God because of your patience and faith in all your persecutions and tribulations that you suffer.

(a sign of the righteous judgment of God, that you may be counted worthy of the Kingdom of God, for which you also suffer).

For it is a righteous thing with God to repay those who trouble you with tribulation.

And to you who are troubled: rest with us when the Lord Jesus shall show Himself from Heaven with His mighty angels

in flaming fire, rendering vengeance on those who do not know God and who do not obey the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ;

who shall be punished with everlasting perdition from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power

10 when He shall, on that Day, come to be glorified in His saints and made marvelous in all those who believe, because our testimony toward you was believed.

11 Therefore, we pray always for you that our God may make you worthy of this calling and fulfill all the good pleasure of His goodness, and the work of faith, with power;

12 so that the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ may be glorified in you, and you in Him, according to the grace of our God and of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Now we urge you, brothers, by the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ (and by our assembling to Him),

to not waver suddenly in your mind or be troubled by spirit or word or letter which seems to come from us, as though the day of Christ were at hand.

Let no one deceive you in any way. For that Day shall not come unless an apostasy comes first and the man of sin is revealed - the Son of Perdition -

who is an adversary and exalts himself against all that is called God or that is worshipped; so that he sits as God, in the Temple of God, showing himself that he is God.

Do you not remember that when I was still with you, I told you these things?

And now you know what is restrained, so that he might be revealed in his time.

For the mystery of iniquity is already at work. He who is now restrained shall be so only until He is taken out of the way.

And then that wicked man shall be revealed, whom the Lord shall consume with the Spirit of His mouth and abolish with the brightness of His coming;

that is, whose coming is by the working of Satan (with all power and signs and lying wonders)

10 and in all deceit of unrighteousness among those who perish, because they did not receive the love of the truth (so that they might be saved).

11 And therefore, God shall send them strong delusion, so that they would believe lies,

12 so that all who did not believe the truth but had pleasure in unrighteousness might be damned.

13 But we ought always to give thanks to God for you, brothers (beloved of the Lord) because God has chosen you for salvation from the beginning, through sanctification of the Spirit and the faith of truth;

14 to which He called you by our Gospel to obtain the Glory of our Lord Jesus Christ.

15 Therefore, brothers, stand fast and keep the instructions which you have been taught, either by word or by our letter.

16 Now may the same Jesus Christ our Lord, and our God, even the Father, Who has loved us and has given us everlasting consolation and good hope through grace,

17 comfort your hearts and establish you in every word and good work.

Furthermore, brothers, pray for us; so that the Word of the Lord may have free passage and be glorified (just as with you)

and that we may be delivered from unreasonable and evil men. For all do not have faith.

But the Lord, Who will establish you and keep you from evil, is faithful.

And we are persuaded by you through the Lord that you both do and will do the things of which we warn you.

And the Lord guide your hearts to the love of God and the awaiting of Christ.

We charge you, brothers, in the Name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to withdraw yourselves from every brother who walks inordinately and not according to the instruction he received from us.

For you yourselves know how you ought to follow us. For we did not behave inordinately among you.

Nor did we take food from anyone for nothing. But we worked with labor and travail night and day because we did not wish to be a burden to any of you.

Not because we do not have authority, but so that we might make ourselves an example for you to follow.

10 For even when we were with you, we warned you of this; that if there were any who would not work, he should not eat.

11 For we hear that there are some who walk among you inordinately and do not work at all, but are busybodies.

12 Therefore, such as those we warn and exhort by our Lord Jesus Christ, that they work with quietness and eat their own food.

13 And you, brothers, do not be weary in well-doing.

14 If anyone does not obey this our word in this letter, note him and do not associate with him, so that he may be ashamed.

15 Yet, do not count him as an enemy, but admonish him as a brother.

16 Now, may the Lord - Himself of peace - give you peace always, by all means. The Lord be with you all.

17 The salutation of me, Paul, with my own hand (which is the sign in every letter) so I write.

18 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you all. Amen. The second Epistle to the Thessalonians, written from Athens.

Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, by the Commandment of God our Savior, and of our Lord Jesus Christ, our hope,

To Timothy, my natural son in the faith: Grace, mercy, and peace from God our Father, and from Christ Jesus our Lord.

As I urged you when I departed into Macedonia, remain in Ephesus so that you may charge some to teach no other doctrine,

or to consider fables and endless genealogies (which breed questions rather than godly edifying, which is by faith).

For the purpose of the charge is love out of a pure heart and a good conscience, and faith without hypocrisy.

Some have erred from such things and have turned to mindless twaddle.

They wish to be teachers of the Law and yet do not understand what they say or the things they affirm.

And we know that the Law is good if one uses it lawfully,

knowing this: that the Law is not given for the righteous, but for the lawless and disobedient; for the ungodly and for sinners, for the unholy and profane, for killers of fathers and mothers, for murderers,

10 for sodomites, for kidnappers, for liars, for perjurers, and anything else contrary to wholesome doctrine,

11 according to the glorious Gospel of the blessed God which was entrusted to me.

12 Therefore, I thank Him Who has made me strong - Christ Jesus our Lord. For He counted me faithful and put me in His service

13 when I had previously been a blasphemer and a persecutor and an oppressor. But I was received to mercy. For I did it ignorantly, through unbelief.

14 But the grace of our Lord was exceedingly abundant, with faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.

15 This is a true saying and by all means worthy to be received: that Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners. Of whom I am chief.

16 But, I was received to mercy for this reason: so that Jesus Christ should first show all long suffering on me, as an example to those who shall (in time) come to believe in Him unto eternal life.

17 Now, to the King everlasting, immortal, invisible; to God (Who alone is wise) be honor and glory forever and ever. Amen.

18 This commandment I commit to you, son Timothy, according to previous prophecies concerning you, so that by them you should fight a good fight,

19 having faith and a good conscience (which some have put away and, as far as faith, have made shipwreck -

20 of whom is Hymenaeus and Alexander - whom I have delivered to Satan so that they might learn not to blaspheme).

Therefore, I encourage most of all that supplications, prayers, intercessions, and giving of thanks be made for all mankind;

for kings, and for all who are in authority. So that we may lead a quiet and a peaceable life, in all godliness and honesty.

For this is good and acceptable in the sight of God our Savior,

Who desires that all mankind should be saved and come to the acknowledgment of the Truth.

For there is one God - and one Mediator between God and man - Who is the man, Christ Jesus.

He gave Himself - a ransom for all - to be that testimony in due time.

To this I am ordained a preacher and an Apostle (I speak the truth in Christ, and do not lie), a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Therefore, I desire that the men pray everywhere, lifting up pure hands without wrath or doubting;

also that the women clothe themselves in appropriate apparel, with discretion and modesty (not with braided hair or gold or pearls or costly garments,

10 but as becomes women who profess the fear of God with good works).

11 Let the woman learn in silence, with all subjection.

12 I do not permit a woman to teach or to usurp authority over the man, but to be in silence.

13 For Adam was formed first, then Eve.

14 And Adam was not deceived. But the woman, being deceived, was in transgression.

15 Nevertheless, through the bearing of children she shall be saved, if they continue in faith and love and holiness with modesty.

This is a true saying: If anyone desires the office of an overseer, he desires a worthy work.

Therefore, an overseer must be blameless - the husband of one wife, sober, temperate, modest, a lover of strangers, able to teach -

neither a drunkard nor a brawler nor given to greed, but gentle, peace-loving and without avarice.

One who rules his own house well, having obedient children under him with all respect.

For if anyone cannot rule his own house, how shall he care for the Church of God?

He may not be a young scholar, lest he (being puffed up) falls into the condemnation of the devil.

He must also be of good reputation, even among outsiders, lest he fall into rebuke and the snare of the devil.

Likewise, deacons must be honorable—not duplicitous or given to much wine or to greed—

holding to the mystery of the faith in pure conscience.

10 And let them be tested first, then let them minister (if they are found blameless).

11 Likewise, their wives must also be honorable (not slanderers), sober, and faithful in all things.

12 Let the deacons be the husbands of one wife, and such as can rule their children and their own households well.

13 For those who have ministered well gain a good standing for themselves, and great liberty in the faith, which is in Christ Jesus.

14 These things I write to you, hoping to come to you very shortly;

15 but if I am delayed, so that you may still know how you ought to behave yourself in the house of God (which is the Church of the living God, the pillar and ground of truth).

16 And admittedly, the mystery of godliness is great: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on in the world, and received up in Glory.

Now the Spirit clearly says that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith and shall consider spirits of error and doctrines of demons.

They speak lies through hypocrisy and have their consciences burned with a hot iron,

forbidding to marry and commanding to abstain from foods which God has created to be received with thanksgiving by those who believe and know the truth.

For every creature of God is good. And nothing ought to be refused, if it is received with thanksgiving.

For it is sanctified by the Word of God, and prayer.

If you put the brothers in remembrance of these things, you shall be a good minister of Jesus Christ, who has been nourished in the words of faith and good doctrine which you have continually followed.

But, reject worldly and old wives’ fables. And train yourself towards godliness.

For bodily exercise profits a little. But godliness is profitable towards all things, having the promise of this life and of that which is to come.

This is a true saying, and by all means worthy to be received.

10 For this we labor and are rebuked: because we trust in the living God, Who is the Savior of all mankind, especially those who believe.

11 Command and teach these things.

12 Let no one despise your youth. But be an example to those who believe - in word, in conversation, in love, in spirit, in faith and in pureness.

13 Until I come, pay attention to reading, to encouragement, and to doctrine.

14 Do not neglect the gift that is in you, which was given to you by prophecy with the laying on of the hands of the eldership.

15 Attend to these things. Give yourself to them. So that your progress may be seen among all.

16 Pay attention to yourself, and to learning. Persist in it. For in so doing, you shall both save yourself and those who hear you.

Do not rebuke an elder, but encourage him as a father, and the younger men as brothers;

the elder women as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all pureness.

Honor widows which are truly widows.

But if any widow has children or nephews, let them learn first to show godliness toward their own house, and to repay their family. For that is an honorable thing, and acceptable before God.

And she who is a true widow, and left alone, trusts in God, and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

Therefore, warn them of these things, so that they may be blameless.

If there is anyone who does not look out for his own, and namely for those of his household, he denies the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

Do not let a widow under 60 years old be registered; who has been the wife of one husband

10 and has a reputation for good works (whether she has nourished her children, taken in strangers, washed the saints’ feet, ministered to those who were in adversity, and if she has constantly pursued every good work).

11 But refuse the younger widows. For when their desires begin to draw them away from Christ, they will marry,

12 having damnation because they have broken their first faith.

13 And also, being idle, they learn to go about from house to house. Indeed, not only are they idle, but also gossips and busybodies, speaking things which are not necessary.

14 Therefore, I desire that the younger women marry, and bear children, and govern the house, and give no opportunity for the adversary to speak evil.

15 For some have already turned back after Satan.

16 If any faithful man or faithful woman has widows, let them minister to them, and do not let the Church be charged, so that there may be enough for those who are true widows.

17 Let the elders who rule well have double the honor, especially those who labor in the Word and doctrine.

18 For the Scripture says, “You shall not muzzle the mouth of the ox that treads out the corn,” and, “The laborer is worthy of his wages.”

19 Receive no accusation against an elder unless by two or three witnesses.

20 Rebuke those who sin openly, so that the rest may also fear.

21 I charge you before God and the Lord Jesus Christ and the elect angels to observe these things, without preferring one to another. And do nothing with partiality.

22 Do not quickly lay hands on anyone or share in the sins of others. Keep yourself pure.

23 Drink water no longer. But use a little wine for your stomach’s sake, and your frequent infirmities.

24 Some men’s sins are evident, preceding them to judgment. But some follow afterward.

25 Likewise, good works are also evident beforehand. And those which are otherwise cannot be hidden.

Let as many servants who are under the yoke count their masters worthy of all honor, so that the Name of God and His doctrine are not blasphemed.

And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them (because they are brothers). But instead serve them, because they are faithful and beloved and partakers of the benefit. Teach and encourage these things.

If anyone teaches otherwise - and does not consent to the wholesome words of our Lord Jesus Christ and to the doctrine according to godliness -

he is puffed up and knows nothing, but is obsessed with disputing and arguing over words; from which comes envy, strife, coarse language, evil suspicions,

meaningless disputations of men of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, who think that gain is godliness. Separate yourself from such.

But godliness is great gain if one is content with what he has.

For we brought nothing into the world. And it is certain that we can carry nothing out.

Therefore, when we have food and clothing, let us be content with that.

For those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and snares, and into many foolish and hurtful lusts, which drown man in perdition and destruction.

10 For the desire of money is the root of all evil, for which some - while lusting after it - have erred from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11 But you, O man of God, flee these things! And pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and meekness.

12 Fight the good fight of faith. Lay hold of eternal life, to which you are also called and have professed a good profession before many witnesses.

13 I charge you in the sight of God Who quickens all things, and before Jesus Christ Who witnessed a good confession under Pontius Pilate,

14 that you keep this commandment spotless and irreproachable until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ;

15 which He Who is the blessed and only Ruler, the King of kings and Lord of lords, shall show in due time.

16 He alone has immortality and dwells in unapproachable light, Whom no man ever saw nor can see, and to whom be honor and power everlasting, Amen.

17 Charge those who are rich in this world not to be high-minded, and not to trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God Who abundantly gives us all things to enjoy;

18 to do good and be rich in good works. And be generous and ready to share,

19 laying up in treasure for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, so that they may obtain eternal life.

20 O Timothy, keep that which was entrusted to you. And avoid profane and empty babblings and so-called oppositions of “science”.

21 By professing it, some have erred concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.

(The first Epistle to Timothy, written from Laodicea, the chief city of Phrygia Pacatiana)

Paul, an Apostle of Jesus Christ, by the will of God, according to the promise of life which is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, my beloved son: Grace, mercy and peace, from God the Father, and from Jesus Christ our Lord.

I thank God, Whom I serve with pure conscience (as my forefathers did), remembering you in my prayers night and day, without ceasing;

desiring to see you, mindful of your tears, so that I may be filled with joy

when I call to remembrance the sincere faith that is in you (which dwelt first in your grandmother, Lois, and in your mother, Eunice, and assuredly dwells in you also).

Therefore, I remind you to stir up the gift of God which is in you by the laying on of my hands.

For God has not given us the spirit of fear, but of power, and of love, and of self-control.

Therefore, do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord, nor of me (His prisoner). But share in the afflictions of the Gospel according to the power of God.

He has saved us and called us with a holy calling - not according to our works - but according to His own purpose and grace which was given to us through Christ Jesus before the world was;

10 but is now revealed by the appearing of our Savior, Jesus Christ, Who has abolished death and has brought life and immortality to light through the Gospel,

11 for which I am appointed a preacher and Apostle and a teacher of the Gentiles.

12 For this reason I also suffer these things. But I am not ashamed. For I know Whom I have believed. And I am persuaded that He is able to keep that which I have committed to Him until that Day.

13 Keep the true pattern of the wholesome words which you have heard from me in faith and love, which is in Christ Jesus.

14 Keep that worthy thing which was committed to you through the Holy Ghost, Who dwells in us.

15 This you know: that all those who are in Asia have turned from me. Of which are Phygellus and Hermogenes.

16 May the Lord give mercy to the house of Onesiphorus. For he often refreshed me and was not ashamed of my chain.

17 But when he was at Rome, he sought me out very diligently and found me.

18 The Lord grant to him that he may find mercy with the Lord on that Day. And you know very well in how many things he has ministered to me at Ephesus.

Therefore you, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus.

And the things you have heard from me among many witnesses, entrust these to faithful men who shall be able to teach others also.

You, therefore, suffer affliction as a good soldier of Jesus Christ.

No one who serves as a soldier entangles himself with the affairs of life, because he wants to please the one who has chosen him to be a soldier.

And also, if anyone competes as an athlete, he is not crowned unless he has competed lawfully.

The farmer must labor before he receives the fruits.

Consider what I say. May the Lord give you understanding in all things.

Remember that Jesus Christ - of the seed of David - was raised again from the dead according to my Gospel,

in which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even unto bonds. But the Word of God is not bound.

10 Therefore, I suffer all things for the elect’s sake, so that they might also obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal Glory.

11 This is a true saying: “For if we are dead together with Him, we also shall live together with Him.

12 “If we suffer, we shall also reign together with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us.

13 “If we do not believe, He still remains faithful. He cannot deny Himself.”

14 Remind them of these things. And testify before the Lord that they do not strive about words (which is of no use, except for the subversion of the hearers).

15 Be eager to present yourself to God approved; a worker who does not need to be ashamed, rightly dividing the Word of Truth.

16 But stay away from godless and empty babblings. For they shall increase to more ungodliness.

17 And their word shall grow like gangrene. Of which sort is Hymenaeus and Philetus;

18 who, as concerning the truth, have erred from the mark; saying that the resurrection has already passed, destroying the faith of some.

19 But the foundation of God remains sure, as has this seal: “The Lord knows who are His,” and, “Let everyone who calls on the Name of Christ depart from iniquity.”

20 But, in a great house are not only vessels of gold and of silver, but also of wood and of earth; and some for honor, and some for dishonor.

21 Therefore, if anyone cleanses himself from these, he shall be a vessel for honor; sanctified and useful to the Lord, having been prepared for every good work.

22 Also, flee from the lusts of youth, and pursue righteousness, faith, love, and peace (with those who call on the Lord with a pure heart).

23 And put away foolish and uneducated questions, knowing that they beget strife.

24 The servant of the Lord must not strive, but must be gentle toward all, able to teach, forbearing;

25 disciplining those who oppose with humility, in case God might give them repentance at any time so that they may acknowledge the Truth

26 and repent out of that snare of the devil (of whom they have been taken prisoner), to do His will.

Also know this: that perilous times shall come in the last days.

For men shall be lovers of their own selves, covetous, boasters, proud, blasphemers, disobedient to parents, unthankful, unholy,

hard-hearted, trucebreakers, slanderers, out of control, brutal, no lovers of good,

traitors, rash, haughty, lovers of pleasures more than lovers of God,

appearing to be godly but denying its power. And from such turn away!

For of this sort are those who creep into houses and captivate simple women laden with sins; led by diverse lusts,

always learning and never coming to a knowledge of the Truth.

And as Jannes and Jambres withstood Moses, so also do these resist the Truth; men of corrupt minds, reprobate concerning the faith.

But they shall no longer prevail. For their madness shall be evident to all, as theirs also was.

10 But you have closely followed my teaching, manner of living, purpose, faith, longsuffering, love, patience,

11 persecutions and afflictions which came to me at Antioch, at Iconium, and at Lystra – what persecutions I suffered! But the Lord delivered me from them all.

12 Indeed, and all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus shall suffer persecution.

13 But the evil men and deceivers shall grow worse and worse, deceiving and being deceived.

14 But you continue in the things which you have learned (and which are committed to you), knowing from Whom you have learned them,

15 and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures which are able to make you wise unto salvation through faith which is in Christ Jesus.

16 For the whole Scripture is given by inspiration from God; and is profitable for teaching, convicting, correcting, and instructing in righteousness.

17 So that the man of God may be complete, fully equipped for every good work.

Therefore, I charge you before God and before the Lord Jesus Christ, Who shall judge the living and dead at His appearing and in His Kingdom:

Preach the Word! Be ready, in season and out of season. Convict, rebuke, encourage, with all longsuffering and teaching.

For the time will come when they will not endure sound doctrine. But having itching ears, they shall gather a heap of teachers according to their own lusts

and shall turn their ears from the truth and shall be given to fables.

But you, be sober in all things. Suffer adversity. Do the work of an evangelist. Carry out your ministry fully.

For I am already being offered. And the time of my departing is at hand.

I have fought the good fight and have finished my course. I have kept the faith.

Hereafter, the crown of righteousness - which the Lord, the Righteous Judge, shall give me on that Day - is laid up for me. And not only to me but also to all those who love His appearing.

Hurry to come to me at once!

10 For Demas has forsaken me, and has embraced this present world, and has departed to Thessalonica. Crescens has gone to Galatia; Titus to Dalmatia.

11 Only Luke is with me. Take Mark and bring him with you. For he is useful to me for ministry.

12 And I have sent Tychicus to Ephesus.

13 When you come, bring the cloak with you which I left with Carpus at Troas, and the books (especially the parchments).

14 Alexander, the coppersmith, has done me much evil. May the Lord reward him according to his works.

15 You beware of him also. For he greatly opposes our preaching.

16 At my first defense, no one stood by me. But, all deserted me. May it not be counted against them.

17 But the Lord assisted me and strengthened me; so that by me the preaching might be fully believed, and that all the Gentiles should hear. And I was delivered out of the mouth of the lion.

18 And the Lord will deliver me from every evil work and will preserve me for His Heavenly Kingdom. To Him be praise for ever and ever! Amen.

19 Greet Prisca and Aquila and the household of Onesiphorus.

20 Erastus stayed at Corinth. I left Trophimus at Miletus, sick.

21 Hurry to come before winter. Eubulus greets you, and Pudens, and Linus, and Claudia, and all the brothers.

22 The Lord Jesus Christ be with your Spirit. Grace be with you. Amen.

(The second Epistle written from Rome to Timothy, the first Bishop elected of the Church of Ephesus, when Paul was presented the second time before the Emperor Nero)

Paul, a servant of God, and an Apostle of Jesus Christ, according to the faith of God’s Elect and the acknowledging of the Truth which is according to godliness;

in the hope of eternal life - which God, Who cannot lie, has promised since before the world began.

But He has revealed His Word in due time through preaching, which is committed to me according to the Commandment of God our Savior,

To Titus, my natural son according to the common faith: Grace, mercy, and peace, from God the Father, and from the Lord Jesus Christ our Savior.

For this reason I left you in Crete, so that you would continue to organize the things which remain, and would ordain elders in every city, as I directed you

(if any are blameless, the husband of one wife, having faithful children who are not accused of wastefulness or disobedient).

For an overseer must be blameless, as God’s steward, not willful, not angry, not given to wine, not a brawler, not greedy;

but one who loves strangers and goodness, is wise, righteous, holy, temperate,

holding fast the faithful Word according to doctrine, so that he may also be able to encourage with sound doctrine and convince those who speak against it.

10 For there are many disobedient and empty talkers, and deceivers of minds (mainly those of the circumcision)

11 whose mouths must be stopped; who subvert whole houses, teaching things they ought not for the sake of dishonest gain.

12 One of them (one of their own Prophets) said, “The Cretans are always liars, evil beasts, lazy gluttons.”

13 This witness is true! Therefore, rebuke them sharply, so that they may be sound in the faith

14 and not holding onto Jewish fables and commandments of men which turn away from the Truth.

15 To the pure, are all things pure. But, to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure. But even their minds and consciences are defiled.

16 They profess that they know God, but by works they deny Him and are abominable and disobedient and worthless as to every good work.

But you, speak things befitting to sound doctrine -

so that the older men are sober, honorable, temperate, sound in the faith, in love, and in patience;

the elder women likewise - so that they are in such behavior as becomes holiness (not false accusers, not subject to much wine, teachers of virtue);

so that they may instruct the young women to be sober-minded, to love their husbands, love their children,

to be temperate, chaste, homemakers, good, subject to their own husbands (so that the Word of God is not blasphemed).

Exhort young men likewise, so that they are sober-minded.

In all things, show yourself to be an example of good works - with uncorrupted doctrine, gravity, integrity,

and sound speech that cannot be condemned - so that whoever opposes you may be ashamed, having nothing evil to say of you.

Let servants be subject to their masters, and please them in all things—not questioning

10 or pilfering, but showing all good faithfulness—so that they may adorn the doctrine of God our Savior in all things.

11 For the grace of God which brings salvation to all mankind has appeared,

12 and teaches us that we should deny ungodliness and worldly lusts; and that we should live soberly and righteously and godly in this present world,

13 looking for the blessed hope and appearing of the Glory of the mighty God, and of our Savior, Jesus Christ;

14 Who gave Himself for us so that He might redeem us from all iniquity and cleanse us to be a peculiar people for Himself, zealous for good works.

15 Speak these things. And encourage and convict with all authority. See that no one despises you.

Remind them to be subject to the principalities and powers so that they are obedient and ready for every good work;

to speak evil of no one so that they are not contentious, but soft, showing humility to all mankind.

For we ourselves also were in times past unwise, disobedient, deceived, serving the lusts and diverse pleasures, living in maliciousness and envy, hateful, and hating one another.

But when that kindness and that love of God our Savior appeared toward us

- not by the works of righteousness which we had done, but according to His mercy - He saved us, by the washing of the new birth and the renewing of the Holy Ghost,

which He poured out on us abundantly through Jesus Christ our Savior.

So that we, being justified by His grace, would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

This is a true saying. And these things I want you to affirm constantly, so that those who have believed God might be careful to practice good works. These things are good and profitable to man.

But stay away from foolish questions and genealogies and contentions and arguments about the Law. For they are unprofitable and pointless.

10 Reject a heretic after one or two warnings,

11 knowing that such a man is perverted and sins, being self-condemned.

12 When I shall send Artemas or Tychicus to you, be diligent to come to me to Nicopolis. For I have determined to winter there.

13 Bring Zenas, the expounder of the Law, and Apollos on their journey quickly, so that they lack nothing.

14 And let our own also learn to practice good works for necessary uses, so that they are not unfruitful.

15 All who are with me greet you. Greet those who love us in the faith. Grace be with you all. Amen.

(To Titus, elected the first overseer of the Church of the Cretans, written from Nicopolis in Macedonia.)

Paul, a prisoner of Jesus Christ, and brother Timothy, To Philemon, our dear friend and fellow helper;

and to dear sister Apphia, and to Archippus, our fellow soldier, and to the church in your house:

Grace be with you, and peace, from God our Father, and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I give thanks to my God (making mention of you always in my prayers

when I hear of your love and faith which you have toward the Lord Jesus, and toward all saints,

so that the fellowship of your faith may be made effective, and that whatever good thing is in you through Christ Jesus may be known).

For we have great joy and encouragement in your love because by you, brother, the saints’ hearts are comforted.

Therefore, though I am very bold in Christ to command you that which is appropriate,

yet for love’s sake, rather, I exhort you (though I am as I am: old, and even now a prisoner for Jesus Christ)

10 I encourage you for my son Onesimus, whom I have begotten in my imprisonment

11 (who in the past was unprofitable to you, but is now profitable to both you and me)

12 and whom I have sent again. Therefore, receive him who is my own heart,

13 whom I wanted to keep with me so that he might have ministered to me in your place in the bonds of the Gospel.

14 But I do not wish to do anything without your consent, so that your goodness would not be out of necessity, but willingly.

15 Therefore, it may be that he departed for a season so that you would receive him forever

16 (no longer as a servant, but above a servant, as a beloved brother), especially to me but how much more to you, both in the flesh and in the Lord?

17 Therefore, if you count us as partners, receive him as me.

18 If he has hurt you, or owes you anything, put that on my account.

19 I, Paul, have written this with my own hand. I will repay it. Though I do not mention that even you owe me yourself.

20 Yes, brother, let me obtain this pleasure from you in the Lord. Comfort my heart in the Lord.

21 Trusting in your obedience, I wrote to you knowing that you will do even more than I say.

22 In addition, prepare lodging for me also. For I trust I shall be freely given to you through your prayers.

23 Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, greets you;

24 as do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow helpers.

25 The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit. Amen.

(Written from Rome to Philemon and sent by Onesimus, a servant.)
