Exodus 1:1-15:18

Now these are the names of the children of Israel who came into Egypt. Every man and his household came there with Jacob.

Reuben, Simeon, Levi, and Judah,

Issachar, Zebulun, and Benjamin,

Dan, and Naphtali, Gad, and Asher.

So all the souls who came out of the loins of Jacob were seventy souls. Joseph was in Egypt already.

Now Joseph died, and all his brothers, and that whole generation.

And the children of Israel brought forth fruit and increased in abundance, and were multiplied, and were exceedingly mighty, so that the land was full of them.

Then there rose up a new king in Egypt, who did not know Joseph.

And he said to his people, “Behold, the people of the children of Israel are greater and mightier than us.

10 “Come, let us work wisely with them, lest they multiply and it happens that if there is war, they also join themselves to our enemies and fight against us and get themselves out of the land.”

11 Therefore, they set taskmasters over them, to keep them under with burdens. And they built the cities Pithom and Raamses for the treasures of Pharaoh.

12 But the more they burdened them, the more they multiplied and grew. Therefore, they were more grieved against the children of Israel.

13 So, the Egyptians caused the children of Israel to serve by cruelty.

14 Thus, they made them weary of their lives by extreme labor in clay and in brick, and in all work in the field, with all manner of bondage, which they laid upon them most cruelly.

15 Moreover, the king of Egypt commanded the midwives of the Hebrew women (of which one’s name was Shiphrah, and the name of another, Puah)

16 and said, “When you do the office of a midwife to the women of the Hebrews, and see them on their stools, if it is a son, then you shall kill him. But if it is a daughter, then let her live.”

17 Nevertheless, the midwives feared God, and did not do as the king of Egypt commanded them but saved the male children.

18 Then the king of Egypt called for the midwives, and said to them, “Why have you done this, and have saved the male children?”

19 And the midwives answered Pharaoh, “Because the Hebrew women are not as the women of Egypt. For they are vigorous and are delivered before the midwives approach them.”

20 God, therefore, prospered the midwives; and the people multiplied and were very mighty.

21 And therefore, because the midwives feared God, He made them houses.

22 Then, Pharaoh charged all his people, saying, “Cast every male child who is born into the river, but save every female child.”

Then, a man of the house of Levi went and took a daughter of Levi as his wife.

And the woman conceived and bore a son. And when she saw that he was fair, she hid him for three months.

But when she could no longer hide him, she took an ark for him made of reed, and daubed it with tar and with pitch, and laid the child therein, and put it among the bulrushes, by the river’s edge.

Now, his sister stood far off, to see what would become of him.

Then, the daughter of Pharaoh came down to wash herself in the river; and her maidens walked by the river’s side. And when she saw the ark among the bulrushes, she sent her maid to fetch it.

Then she opened it and saw it was a child. And behold, the baby wept. So, she had compassion on it, and said, “This is one of the Hebrews’ children.”

Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Shall I go and call a nurse of the Hebrew women to nurse the child for you?”

And Pharaoh’s daughter said to her, “Go.” So, the maid went and called the child’s mother,

to whom Pharaoh’s daughter said, “Take this child away and nurse it for me; and I will reward you.” Then the woman took the child and nursed him.

10 Now the child grew. And she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter. And he was as her son. And she called his name, Moses. “Because” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”

11 And in those days, when Moses was grown, he went forth to his brothers and observed their burdens. He also saw an Egyptian striking one of his Hebrew brothers.

12 And he looked around. And when he saw no one, he killed the Egyptian and hid him in the sand.

13 Again, he came forth the next day. And behold, two Hebrews fought. And he said to him who did the wrong, “Why do you strike your friend?”

14 And he answered, “Who made you a man of authority, and a judge over us? Are you thinking of killing me, as you killed the Egyptian?” Then Moses feared and said, “Certainly this thing is known.”

15 Now Pharaoh heard this matter and sought to kill Moses. Therefore, Moses fled from Pharaoh and dwelt in the land of Midian. And he sat down by a well.

16 And the priest of Midian had seven daughters who came and drew water and filled the troughs to water their father’s sheep.

17 Then, the shepherds came and drove them away. But Moses rose up and defended them and watered their sheep.

18 And when they came to Reuel, their father, he said, “Why have you come so soon today?”

19 And they said, “A man of Egypt delivered us from the hand of the shepherds, and also drew us enough water and watered the sheep.

20 Then he said to his daughters, “And, where is he? Why have you left the man so? Call him, so that he may eat.”

21 And Moses agreed to dwell with the man, who gave his daughter, Zipporah, to Moses.

22 And she bore a son, whose name he called, Gershom. For he said, “I have been a stranger in a strange land.”

23 Then, in process of time, the king of Egypt died. And the children of Israel sighed for the bondage and cried. And their cry for the bondage came up to God.

24 Then God heard their moan; and God remembered His covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.

25 So God looked upon the children of Israel. And God had respect to them.

When Moses kept the sheep of Jethro, his father-in-law, priest of Midian, (and drove the flock to the back side of the desert, and came to the Mountain of God, Horeb),

then the Angel of the LORD appeared to him in a flame of fire, out of the midst of a bush. And he looked. And behold, the bush burned with fire; and the bush was not consumed.

Therefore, Moses said, “I will turn aside, now, and see this great sight, why the bush does not burn.”

And when the LORD saw that he turned aside to see, God called to him out of the midst of the bush, and said, “Moses. Moses.” And he answered, “I am here.”

Then he said, “Do not come here. Take off your shoes, for the place whereon you stand is Holy ground.”

Moreover, He said, “I am the God of your father, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.” Then Moses hid his face; for he was afraid to look upon God.

Then the LORD said, “I have surely seen the trouble of My people who are in Egypt. And I have heard their cry, because of their taskmasters. For I know their sorrows.

“Therefore, I have come down to deliver them out of the hand of the Egyptians and to bring them out of that land into a good and large land, into a land that flows with milk and honey, into the place of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites.

“And now, lo, the cry of the children of Israel has come to Me. And I have also seen the oppression with which the Egyptians oppress them.

10 “Come now, therefore, and I will send you to Pharaoh, so that you may bring My people, the children of Israel, out of Egypt.”

11 But Moses said to God, “Who am I, that I should go to Pharaoh, and that I should bring the children of Israel out of Egypt?”

12 And He answered, “Certainly I will be with you. And this shall be a sign to you, that I have sent you. After you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall serve God upon this mountain.”

13 Then Moses said to God, “Behold, when I shall come to the children of Israel and say to them, ‘The God of your fathers has sent me to you’, if they say to me, ‘What is his Name?’ what shall I say to them?”

14 And God answered Moses, “I AM WHO I AM.” Also, He said, “Thus shall you say to the children of Israel, ‘I AM has sent me to you.’”

15 And God spoke further to Moses, “Thus shall you say to the children of Israel, ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has sent me to you’. This is My Name, forever. And this is My memorial to all ages.

16 “Go and gather the elders of Israel together; and you shall say to them, ‘The LORD God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob appeared to me, and said, “I have surely remembered you and that which is done to you in Egypt.

17 “Therefore I said, ‘I will bring you out of the affliction of Egypt to the land of the Canaanites and the Hittites and the Amorites and the Perizzites and the Hivites and the Jebusites, to a land that flows with milk and honey.’”

18 “Then they shall obey My voice. And you and the elders of Israel shall go to the king of Egypt and say to him, ‘The LORD God of the Hebrews has met with us. We ask you now, therefore, please let us go three days’ journey in the wilderness, so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.’

19 “But, I know that the king of Egypt will only let you go by a strong hand.

20 “Therefore, I will stretch out My hand and strike Egypt with all My wonders which I will do in the midst thereof. And after that, he shall let you go.

21 “And I will make this people favored by the Egyptians, so that when you go, you shall not go empty.

22 “For every woman shall ask of her neighbor (and of her who sojourns in her house) jewels of silver and jewels of gold and clothing. And you shall put them on your sons and on your daughters and shall plunder the Egyptians.”

Then Moses answered, and said, “But lo, they will neither believe me nor listen to my voice. For they will say, ‘The LORD has not appeared to you.’”

And the LORD said to him, “What is that in your hand?” And he answered, “A rod.”

Then he said, “Cast it on the ground.” So, he cast it on the ground; and it was turned into a serpent. And Moses fled from it.

Again the LORD said to Moses, “Put forth your hand and take it by the tail.” Then he put forth his hand and caught it; and it was turned into a rod in his hand.

“Do this, so that they may believe that the LORD God of their fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob has appeared to you.”

And furthermore, the LORD said to him, “Now, thrust your hand into your bosom.” And he thrust his hand into his bosom. And when he took it out again, behold his hand was leprous as snow.

Moreover, He said, “Put your hand into your bosom again.” So, he put his hand into his bosom again and pulled it out of his bosom. And behold, it was turned back as his other flesh.

“So shall it be, if they will not believe you or obey the voice of the first sign, they shall still believe the voice of the second sign.

“But, if they will still not believe these two signs or obey your voice, then you shall take of the water of the river and pour it upon the dry land. So, the water which you shall take out of the river shall be turned to blood upon the dry land.”

10 But Moses said to the LORD, “Oh my LORD, I am not eloquent, neither before nor since You have spoken to Your servant. But I am slow of speech and slow of tongue.”

11 Then the LORD said to him, “Who has given the mouth to man? Or, Who has made the dumb or the deaf or him who sees or the blind? Have not I, the LORD?

12 “Therefore, go now; and I will be with your mouth and will teach you what you shall say.”

13 But he said, “Oh, my LORD. Please send by the hand of someone else.”

14 Then the LORD was very angry with Moses, and said, “Do not I know Aaron, your brother, the Levite; that he himself shall speak? For lo, he also comes forth to meet you. And when he sees you, he will be glad in his heart.

15 “Therefore, you shall speak to him and put the words in his mouth. And I will be with your mouth, and with his mouth, and will teach you what you ought to do.

16 “And he shall be your spokesman to the people. And he shall be, indeed he shall be as your mouth. And you shall be to him as God.

17 “Moreover, you shall take this rod in your hand, with which you shall do miracles.”

18 Therefore, Moses went and returned to Jethro, his father-in-law, and said to him, “Please, let me go and return to my brothers who are in Egypt and see whether they are still alive.” Then Jethro said to Moses, “Go in peace.”

19 (For the LORD had said to Moses in Midian, “Go, return to Egypt. For they are all dead who plotted to kill you.)

20 Then Moses took his wife and his sons and put them on a donkey and returned toward the land of Egypt. And Moses took the rod of God in his hand.

21 And the LORD said to Moses, “When you have entered and come into Egypt again, see that you do before Pharaoh all the wonders which I have put in your hand. But I will harden his heart; and he shall not let the people go.

22 “Then you shall say to Pharaoh, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Israel is My son, My firstborn.

23 “Therefore I say to you, ‘Let My son go, so that he may serve Me. If you refuse to let him go, behold, I will kill your son, your firstborn.’”’”

24 And as he was on the way, in the Inn, the LORD met him, and would have killed him.

25 Then Zipporah took a sharp knife and cut away the foreskin of her son and cast it at his feet, and said, “You are indeed a bloody husband to me.”

26 So He departed from him. Then she said, “O bloody husband!” (because of the circumcision)

27 Then the LORD said to Aaron, “Go meet Moses in the wilderness.” And he went and met him on the Mount of God and kissed him.

28 Then Moses told Aaron all the words of the LORD Who had sent him, and all the signs with which He had charged him.

29 So Moses and Aaron went and gathered all the elders of the children of Israel.

30 And Aaron told all the words which the LORD had spoken to Moses. And he did the miracles in the sight of the people.

31 And the people believed. And when they heard that the LORD had visited the children of Israel and had looked upon their tribulation, they bowed down and worshipped.

Then afterward, Moses and Aaron went and said to Pharaoh, “Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘Let my people go, so that they may celebrate a feast to Me in the wilderness.’”

And Pharaoh said, “Who is the ‘LORD’, that I should hear His voice and let Israel go? I do not know the ‘LORD’, nor will I let Israel go.”

And they said, “We worship the God of the Hebrews. Please, let us go three days’ journey in the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, lest He bring the pestilence or sword upon us.”

Then the king of Egypt said to them, “Moses and Aaron, why do you cause the people to cease from their works? Get to work!”

Pharaoh said furthermore, “Behold, many people are now in the land, and you make them stop working.”

Therefore, that same day, Pharaoh gave commandment to the taskmasters of the people, and to their officers, saying,

“You shall give the people no more straw to make brick (as in times past). Let them go and gather straw themselves.

“Nevertheless, lay upon them the same number of bricks which they made before. Diminish nothing thereof. For they are idle. Therefore, they cry, saying, ‘Let us go to offer sacrifice to our God.’

“Lay more work upon the men and make them do it; and do not let them listen to false words.”

10 Then, the taskmasters of the people and their officers went out and told the people, saying, “Thus says Pharaoh, ‘I will give you no more straw.

11 “Go get straw for yourselves, wherever you can find it. But nothing of your labor shall be diminished.’”

12 Then, the people were scattered throughout all the land of Egypt, to gather chaff instead of straw.

13 And the taskmasters hurried them, saying, “Finish your day’s work - every day’s task - as you did when you had straw.”

14 And the officers of the children of Israel (which Pharaoh’s taskmasters had set over them) were beaten, and were asked, “Why have you not fulfilled your task in making bricks yesterday and today, as in times past?”

15 Then the officers of the children of Israel came and cried to Pharaoh, saying, “Why do you deal this way with your servants?

16 “There is no straw given to your servants; and they say to us, ‘Make brick!’ And lo, your servants are beaten and your people are blamed.”

17 But he said, “You are too idle! Therefore, you say, ‘Let us go to offer sacrifice to the LORD.’

18 “Go now, therefore, and work! For there shall be no straw given to you! Yet you shall still deliver the whole quota of bricks!”

19 Then, the officers of the children of Israel saw the evil upon them, because it was said, “You shall diminish nothing of your bricks, nor of every day’s task.”

20 And they met Moses and Aaron, who stood in their way as they came out from Pharaoh.

21 To whom they said, “The LORD look upon you and judge. For you have made our savor stink before Pharaoh, and before his servants, in that you have put a sword in their hand to kill us.”

22 Therefore, Moses returned to the LORD and said, “LORD, why have you afflicted this people? Why have you sent me?

23 “For since I came to Pharaoh to speak in Your Name, he has troubled this people. And yet, You have not delivered Your people.”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Now you shall see what I will do to Pharaoh. For by a strong hand, he shall let them go, and even be constrained to drive them out of his land.”

Moreover, God spoke to Moses, and said to him, “I am the LORD.

“And I appeared to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob by the Name of Almighty God. But by My Name, ‘Jehovah’, I was not known to them.

“Furthermore, as I made My covenant with them to give them the land of Canaan (the land of their pilgrimage, wherein they were strangers),

“so I have also heard the groaning of the children of Israel whom the Egyptians keep in bondage. And I have remembered My covenant.

“Therefore, say to the children of Israel, ‘I am the LORD; and I will bring you out from the burdens of the Egyptians, and will deliver you out of their bondage, and will redeem you with an outstretched arm, and in great judgments.’

“Also, I will take you for My people, and will be your God. Then you shall know that I, the LORD your God, brings you out from the burdens of the Egyptians.

“And I will bring you into the land which I swore that I would give to Abraham, and to Isaac, and to Jacob. And I will give it to you for a possession. I am the LORD.”

So, Moses told this to the children of Israel. But they did not listen to Moses, because of anguish of spirit and cruel bondage.

10 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

11 “Go tell Pharaoh, King of Egypt, to let the children of Israel go out of his land.”

12 But Moses spoke before the LORD, saying, “Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips. The children of Israel do not listen to me. How then shall Pharaoh hear me?”

13 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and Aaron and charged them to go to the children of Israel and to Pharaoh, King of Egypt, to bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt.

14 These are the heads of their father’s houses. The sons of Reuben, the firstborn of Israel, are Hanoch and Pallu, Hezron and Carmi. These are the families of Reuben.

15 Also, the sons of Simeon: Jemuel and Jamin, and Ohad, and Jachin, and Zohar, and Shaul (the son of a Canaanitish woman). These are the families of Simeon.

16 These, also, are the names of the sons of Levi, in their generations: Gershon and Kohath and Merari (and the years of the life of Levi were a hundred thirty-seven years).

17 The sons of Gershon were Libni and Shimi, by their families,

18 and the sons of Kohath: Amram and Izhar, and Hebron, and Uzziel. And Kohath lived a hundred thirty-three years.

19 Also, the sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. These are the families of Levi and their kindreds.

20 And Amram took Jochebed, his father’s sister, to be his wife. And she bore him Aaron and Moses. And Amram lived a hundred thirty-seven years.

21 Also, the sons of Izhar were Korah, and Nepheg, and Zichri.

22 And the sons of Uzziel were Mishael, and Elzaphan, and Zithri.

23 And Aaron took Elisheba, daughter of Amminadab, sister of Nahshon, to be his wife. She bore him Nadab, and Abihu, Eleazar and Ithamar.

24 Also, the sons of Korah were Assir, and Elkanah and Abiasaph. These are the families of the Korahites.

25 And Eleazar, Aaron’s son, took one of the daughters of Putiel to be his wife, who bore him Phinehas. These are the principal fathers of the Levites, throughout their families.

26 These are Aaron and Moses, to whom the LORD said, “Bring the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt, according to their armies.”

27 These are that Moses and Aaron who spoke to Pharaoh, King of Egypt, that they might bring the children of Israel out of Egypt.

28 And at that time—when the LORD spoke to Moses in the land of Egypt—

29 the LORD spoke to Moses, saying, “I am the LORD. Speak to Pharaoh, the King of Egypt, all that I say to you.”

30 Then Moses said before the LORD, “Behold, I am of uncircumcised lips. How, then, shall Pharaoh hear me?”

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Behold, I have made you as Pharaoh’s god. And your brother, Aaron, shall be your prophet.

“You shall speak all that I commanded you. And Aaron, your brother, shall tell Pharaoh to let the children of Israel go out of his land.

“But I will harden Pharaoh’s heart and multiply My miracles and My wonders in the land of Egypt.

“And Pharaoh shall not listen to you, so that I may lay My hand upon Egypt and bring My armies (My people, the children of Israel) out of the land of Egypt by great judgments.

“Then the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I stretch forth My hand upon Egypt and bring out the children of Israel from among them.”

Then, Moses and Aaron did as the LORD commanded them, so they did.

Now, Moses was eighty years old, and Aaron eighty-three, when they spoke to Pharaoh.

And the LORD had spoken to Moses and Aaron, saying,

“If Pharaoh speaks to you, saying, ‘Show a miracle for yourselves’, then you shall say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and cast it before Pharaoh.’ And it shall be turned into a serpent.”

10 Then Moses and Aaron went to Pharaoh and did just as the LORD had commanded. And Aaron cast forth his rod before Pharaoh, and before his servants, and it was turned into a serpent.

11 Then, Pharaoh also called for the wise men and sorcerers. And those charmers of Egypt also did the same with their enchantments.

12 For every man cast down his rod, and they were turned into serpents. But Aaron’s rod devoured their rods.

13 So, Pharaoh’s heart was hardened and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

14 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh’s heart is obstinate. He refuses to let the people go.

15 “Go to Pharaoh in the morning (lo, he will come forth to the water); and you shall stand and meet him by the river’s edge. And you shall take in your hand the rod which was turned into a serpent.

16 “And you shall say to him, ‘The LORD God of the Hebrews has sent me to you, saying, “Let My people go so that they may serve Me in the wilderness.” And behold, you would not hear until now.

17 ‘Thus says the LORD: “In this you shall know that I am the LORD!” Behold, with the rod that is in my hand I will strike the water that is in the river; and it shall be turned into blood.’

18 “And the fish that is in the river shall die. And the river shall stink. And it shall grieve the Egyptians to drink of the water of the river.”

19 The LORD then spoke to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Take your rod and stretch out your hand over the waters of Egypt, over their streams, over their rivers, and over their ponds, and over all pools of their waters; and they shall be blood.’ And there shall be blood throughout the land of Egypt, both in vessels of wood and of stone.”

20 So, Moses and Aaron did just as the LORD commanded. And he lifted up the rod and struck the water that was in the river in the sight of Pharaoh, and in the sight of his servants. And all the water that was in the river was turned into blood.

21 And the fish that were in the river died, and the river stank, so that the Egyptians could not drink the water of the river. And there was blood throughout the land of Egypt.

22 And the enchanters of Egypt did the same with their sorceries. And the heart of Pharaoh was hardened, so that he did not listen to them (as the LORD had said).

23 Then Pharaoh returned and went back into his house; and this still did not enter into his heart.

24 All the Egyptians then dug all around the river for waters to drink (for they could not drink the water of the river).

25 And this continued a full seven days after the LORD had struck the river.

Afterward, the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Let my people go, so that they may serve Me.

“And if you will not let them go, behold, I will strike all your country with frogs.

“And the river shall crawl full of frogs; which shall go up and come into your house, and into your chamber where you sleep, and upon your bed, and into the house of your servants, and upon your people, and into your ovens, and into your kneading troughs.

“Indeed, the frogs shall climb up upon you, and on your people, and upon all your servants.”’”

Also the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your hand with your rod upon the streams, upon the rivers, and upon the ponds,’ and cause frogs to come up upon the land of Egypt.”

Then, Aaron stretched out his hand upon the waters of Egypt; and the frogs came up and covered the land of Egypt.

And the sorcerers did likewise with their sorceries and brought frogs up upon the land of Egypt.

Then, Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Pray to the LORD, that He may take away the frogs from me, and from my people; and I will let the people go, so that they may do sacrifice to the LORD.”

And Moses said to Pharaoh, “It is your glory to command—when I shall pray for you and for your servants and for your people to destroy the frogs from you and from your houses—that they may remain in the river only.”

10 Then he said, “Tomorrow.” And he answered, “May it be as you have said, so that you may know that there is none like the LORD our God.

11 “So the frogs shall depart from you, and from your houses, and from your servants, and from your people. They shall only remain in the river.”

12 Then, Moses and Aaron went out from Pharaoh. And Moses cried to the LORD concerning the frogs which he had sent to Pharaoh.

13 And the LORD did according to the saying of Moses. So, the frogs died in the houses, in the towns, and the fields.

14 And they gathered them together by heaps. And the land stank.

15 But when Pharaoh saw that he had rest, he hardened his heart; and he did not listen to them, as the LORD had said.

16 Again, the LORD said to Moses, “Say to Aaron, ‘Stretch out your rod and strike the dust of the earth,’ so that it may be turned to lice throughout all the land of Egypt.”

17 And they did so. For Aaron stretched out his hand with his rod and struck the dust of the earth. And lice came upon man and upon beast. All the dust of the earth was lice, throughout all the land of Egypt.

18 Now the enchanters did likewise with their enchantments to bring forth lice, but they could not. So, the lice were upon man and upon beast.

19 Then the enchanters said to Pharaoh, “This is the finger of God.” But Pharaoh’s heart remained obstinate; and he did not listen to them (as the LORD had said).

20 Moreover, the LORD said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning and stand before Pharaoh (lo, he will come forth to the water) and say to him, ‘Thus says the LORD: “Let My people go, so that they may serve Me.

21 “And if you will not let My people go, behold, I will send swarms of flies upon you, and upon your servants, and upon your people, and into your houses. And the houses of the Egyptians shall be full of swarms of flies, and also the ground whereon they are.

22 “But the land of Goshen, where My people are, I will cause to be wonderful on that day, so that no swarms of flies shall be there, and so that you may know that I am the LORD in the midst of the Earth.

23 “And I will make a deliverance of My people from your people.”’ This miracle shall be tomorrow.”

24 And the LORD did so. For there came great swarms of flies into the house of Pharaoh, and into his servants’ houses, so that the Earth was corrupted by the swarms of flies, throughout all the land of Egypt.

25 Then, Pharaoh called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “Go. Do sacrifice to your God in this land!”

26 And Moses answered, “It is not right to do so. For we would be offering to the LORD our God that which is an abomination to the Egyptians. Lo, can we sacrifice the abomination of the Egyptians before their eyes and not have them stone us?

27 “Let us go three days’ journey in the desert and sacrifice to the LORD our God, as He has commanded us.”

28 And Pharaoh said, “I will let you go, so that you may sacrifice to the LORD your God in the wilderness. But do not go far away. Pray for me.”

29 And Moses said, “Behold, I will go out from you and pray to the LORD that the swarms of flies may depart from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people tomorrow. But henceforth, let Pharaoh not deceive anymore in not letting the people sacrifice to the LORD.”

30 So, Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD.

31 And the LORD did according to the saying of Moses. And the swarms of flies departed from Pharaoh, from his servants, and from his people. Not one remained.

32 Yet Pharaoh hardened his heart at this time also and did not let the people go.

Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh and tell him, ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: ‘Let My people go, so that they may serve Me.

‘But if you refuse to let them go, and will continue to hold them,

‘behold, the hand of the LORD is upon your flock which is in the field. Upon the horses, upon the donkeys, upon the camels, upon the cattle, and upon the sheep there shall be a mighty plague.’

“And the LORD shall distinguish between the beasts of Israel and the beasts of Egypt, so that nothing at all shall die which pertains to the children of Israel.”

And the LORD appointed a time, saying, “Tomorrow, the LORD shall finish this thing in this land.”

So the next day, the LORD did this thing; and all the cattle of Egypt died. But of the cattle of the children of Israel, not one died.

Then Pharaoh sent, and behold, there was not one of the cattle of the Israelites dead. And the heart of Pharaoh was obstinate; and he did not let the people go.

And the LORD said to Moses and to Aaron, “Take your handful of ashes from the furnace; and Moses shall sprinkle them toward the sky, in the sight of Pharaoh,

“And they shall be turned to dust in all the land of Egypt. And it shall be as a scab breaking out into blisters upon man, and upon beast, throughout all the land of Egypt.”

10 Then they took ashes from the furnace and stood before Pharaoh. And Moses sprinkled them toward the sky. And boils broke out into sores upon man, and upon beast.

11 And the sorcerers could not stand before Moses, because of the boils: for the boils were upon the enchanters and upon all the Egyptians.

12 And the LORD hardened the heart of Pharaoh; and he did not listen to them (as the LORD had said to Moses).

13 Also, the LORD said to Moses, “Rise up early in the morning, and stand before Pharaoh, and tell him, ‘Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: “Let My people go, so that they may serve Me.

14 “For at this time, I will send My plagues upon your heart, and upon your servants, and upon your people, so that you may know that there is none like Me in all the Earth.

15 “For now I will stretch out My hand, so that I may strike you and your people with the pestilence. And you shall perish from the Earth.

16 “And indeed, for this reason I have appointed you: to show My power in you, and to declare My Name throughout all the world.

17 “Yet, you exalt yourself against My people, and do not let them go.

18 “Behold, tomorrow at this time, I will rain a mighty great hail, such as was not in Egypt since the foundation thereof was laid until this time.

19 “Therefore, send now. Gather the cattle and all that you have in the field. For upon all the men and the beasts which are found in the field (and not brought home) the hail shall fall upon them. And they shall die.”’”

20 Those who feared the Word of the LORD among the servants of Pharaoh made his servants and his cattle flee into the houses.

21 But those who did not regard the Word of the LORD left his servants, and his cattle, in the field.

22 And the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch forth your hand toward Heaven, so that there may be hail in all the land of Egypt, upon man and upon beast and upon all the herbs of the field in the land of Egypt.”

23 Then Moses stretched out his rod toward Heaven. And the LORD sent thunder and hail and lightning upon the ground. And the LORD caused hail to rain upon the land of Egypt.

24 So there was hail—and fire mingled with the hail—more grievous than any which had been throughout all the land of Egypt since it became a nation.

25 And the hail struck all that was in the field, throughout all the land of Egypt, both man and beast. Also, the hail struck all the trees of the field and broke all the trees of the field to pieces.

26 Only in the land of Goshen (where the children of Israel were) was there no hail.

27 Then Pharaoh sent and called for Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “I have now sinned. The LORD is righteous; but I and my people are wicked.

28 “Pray to the LORD (for it is enough) that there are no more mighty thunders and hail; and I will let you go. And you shall wait no longer.”

29 Then Moses said to him, “As soon as I am out of the city, I will spread my hands to the LORD, and the thunder shall cease. Nor shall there be any more hail, so that you may know that the Earth is the LORD’s.

30 “As for you and your servants, I know that you do not yet fear before the face of the LORD God.”

31 (And the flax and the barley were stricken. For the barley was eared and the flax was bolled.

32 But, the wheat and the rye were not stricken, for they were hidden in the ground).

33 Then, Moses went out of the city from Pharaoh and spread his hands to the LORD. And the thunder and the hail ceased. Nor did it rain upon the Earth.

34 And when Pharaoh saw that the rain and the hail and the thunder had ceased, he sinned again and hardened his heart (he and his servants).

35 So, the heart of Pharaoh was hardened. Nor would he let the children of Israel go (as the LORD had said through Moses).

10 Again, the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh. For I have hardened his heart (and the hearts of his servants) so that I might work these, My miracles, in the midst of his realm,

and so that you may declare in the ears of your son, and of your son’s son, what things I have done in Egypt and My miracles which I have done among them. So that you may know that I am the LORD.”

Then Moses and Aaron came to Pharaoh. And they said to him, “Thus says the LORD God of the Hebrews: ‘How long will you refuse to humble yourself before Me? Let My people go, so that they may serve Me.

‘But if you refuse to let My people go, behold, tomorrow I will bring locusts into your territory.

‘And they shall cover the face of the Earth, so that a man cannot see the Earth. And they shall eat the residue which remains to you and has escaped from the hail. And they shall eat all your trees that bud in the field.

‘And they shall fill your houses, and all your servants’ houses, and the houses of all the Egyptians, as neither your fathers nor your fathers’ fathers have seen since the time they were upon the Earth until this day.’” So, he returned and went out from Pharaoh.

Then, Pharaoh’s servants said to him, “How long shall he be a snare to us? Let the men go, so that they may serve the LORD their God. Do you still not know that Egypt is destroyed?”

So, Moses and Aaron were again brought to Pharaoh. And he said to them, “Go. Serve the LORD your God. But who are those who shall go?”

And Moses answered, “We will go with our young and with our old, with our sons and with our daughters. With our sheep and with our cattle will we go. For we must celebrate a feast to the LORD.”

10 And he said to them, “Let the LORD so be with you, as I will let you and your children go. But behold, evil is ahead of you.

11 “Not so. Now go, you men, and serve the LORD. For that was your desire.” Then they were thrust out from Pharaoh’s presence.

12 Afterward, the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand upon the land of Egypt for the locusts, so that they may come upon the land of Egypt and eat all the herbs of the land.” (all that the hail had left)

13 Then Moses stretched forth his rod upon the land of Egypt. And the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all that day and all that night. And in the morning, the east wind brought the locusts.

14 So the locusts went up upon all the land of Egypt and remained in all quarters of Egypt. There have never been such grievous locusts as these, nor shall there be after them.

15 For they covered all the face of the Earth, so that the land was dark. And they ate all the herbs of the land, and all the fruits of the trees, which the hail had left, so that there was no green thing left upon the trees, nor among the herbs of the field, throughout all the land of Egypt.

16 Therefore, Pharaoh quickly called for Moses and Aaron, and said, “I have sinned against the LORD your God, and against you.

17 “And now, forgive my sin only this once, and pray to the LORD your God, only so that He may take away from me this death.”

18 Then Moses went out from Pharaoh and prayed to the LORD.

19 And the LORD turned a mighty strong west wind, and took away the locusts, and violently cast them into the Red Sea. There remained not one locust in all the land of Egypt.

20 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart, and he did not let the children of Israel go.

21 Again the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch out your hand toward Heaven, so that darkness may be upon the land of Egypt, even darkness that may be felt.”

22 Then, Moses stretched forth his hand toward Heaven; and there was a black darkness in all the land of Egypt for three days.

23 No one saw another, nor rose up from the place where he was, for three days. But all the children of Israel had light where they dwelt.

24 Then Pharaoh called for Moses, and said, “Go serve the LORD. Only your sheep and your cattle shall remain; and your children shall go with you.”

25 And Moses said, “You must also give us sacrifices and burnt offerings, so that we may sacrifice to the LORD our God.

26 “Therefore, our cattle shall go with us also. There shall not be a hoof left. For we must take from them to serve the LORD our God. Nor do we know how we shall serve the LORD until we get there.”

27 But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart; and he would not let them go.

28 And Pharaoh said to him, “Get away from me! Be careful that you see my face no more. For whenever you come into my sight, you shall die!”

29 Then Moses said, “You have said well. I will never see your face again.”

11 Now the LORD had said to Moses, “I will yet bring one more plague upon Pharaoh, and upon Egypt. After that, he will let you go from here. When he lets you go, he shall at once chase you from here.

“Speak now to the people, so that every man requires from his neighbor, and every woman from her neighbor, jewels of silver and jewels of gold.”

And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. Also, Moses was very great in the land of Egypt, in the sight of Pharaoh’s servants and in the sight of the people.

And Moses said, “Thus says the LORD: ‘About midnight, I will go out into the midst of Egypt.

‘And all the firstborn in the land of Egypt shall die, from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sits on his throne, to the firstborn of the maid servant who is at the mill, and all the firstborn of beasts.

‘Then there shall be a great cry throughout all the land of Egypt, such as has never been before, nor shall be.

‘But, against none of the children of Israel shall a dog move his tongue, against man or beast, so that you may know that the LORD puts a difference between the Egyptians and Israel.

‘And all your servants shall come down to Me, and fall before Me, saying, “Get out, and all the people who are at your feet!” And after this I will depart.’” So, he went out from Pharaoh very angry.

And the LORD said to Moses, “Pharaoh shall not hear you, so that My wonders may be multiplied in the land of Egypt.”

10 So Moses and Aaron did all these wonders before Pharaoh. But the LORD hardened Pharaoh’s heart; and he did not allow the children of Israel to go out of his land.

12 Then the LORD spoke to Moses and to Aaron in the land of Egypt, saying,

“This month shall be to you the beginning of months. It shall be to you the first month of the year.

“Speak to all the congregation of Israel, saying, ‘On the tenth of this month, let every man take for himself a lamb, according to the house of his fathers, a lamb for each household.

‘And if the household is too small for the lamb, he and his neighbor (who is next to his house) shall take one, according to the number of people. You shall divide the lamb according to each man’s eating.

‘Your lamb shall be without blemish, a male of a year old. You shall take it from the lambs or from the kids.

‘And you shall keep it until the fourteenth day of this month. Then all the multitude of the congregation of Israel shall kill it at twilight.

‘Afterward, they shall take from the blood and strike it on the two side posts, and on the lintels, of the houses where they shall eat it.

‘And they shall eat the flesh that same night, roasted with fire, and unleavened bread. With sour herbs they shall eat it.

‘Do not eat any of it raw or boiled at all in water, but roasted with fire (its head, its feet, and its entrails).

10 ‘And you shall reserve nothing of it until the morning. But that which remains of it in the morning you shall burn with fire.

11 ‘And thus shall you eat it: with a belt around your waist, your shoes on your feet, and your staff in your hand. And you shall eat it in haste. It is the LORD’s Passover.

12 ‘For I will pass through the land of Egypt the same night and will strike all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, both man and beast; and I will execute judgment upon all the gods of Egypt. I am the LORD.

13 ‘And the blood shall be a sign for you upon the houses where you are. So, when I see the blood, I will pass over you. And the plague shall not be upon you, to destroy you, when I strike the land of Egypt.

14 ‘And this day shall be to you a remembrance. And you shall keep it a holy Feast to the LORD, throughout your generations. You shall keep it holy by an ordinance, forever.

15 ‘For seven days, you shall eat unleavened bread; and the first day, you shall remove leaven from your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread from the first day until the seventh day, that person shall be cut off from Israel.

16 ‘And on the first day there shall be a holy assembly. Also, on the seventh day there shall be a holy assembly for you. No work shall be done on them, except that which everyone must eat. That only may you do.

17 ‘You shall also keep the Feast of Unleavened Bread. For that same day, I will bring your armies out of the land of Egypt. Therefore, you shall observe this day, throughout your posterity, by an ordinance, forever.

18 ‘In the first month, from twilight on the fourteenth day of the month, you shall eat unleavened bread until twilight on the twenty-first day of the month.

19 ‘For seven days, no leaven shall be found in your houses. For whoever eats leavened bread, that person shall be cut off from the Congregation of Israel, whether he is a stranger or born in the land.

20 ‘You shall eat no leavened bread. In all your dwellings, you shall eat unleavened bread.’”

21 Then, Moses called all the elders of Israel, and said to them, “Choose and take a lamb for each of your households; and kill the Passover.

22 “And take a bunch of hyssop and dip it in the blood that is in the basin. And strike the lintel and the side posts with the blood that is in the basin. And let none of you go out at the door of the house until the morning.

23 “For the LORD will pass by to strike the Egyptians. And when He sees the blood upon the lintel, and on the two side posts, the LORD will pass over the door and will not allow the destroyer to come into your houses to plague you.

24 “Therefore, you shall observe this thing as an ordinance for you and for your sons, forever.

25 “And when you shall come into the land which the LORD will give you, as He has promised, then you shall keep this service.

26 “And when your children ask you, ‘What service is this you keep?’

27 “then you shall say, ‘It is the sacrifice of the LORD’s Passover, Who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt when He struck the Egyptians and preserved our houses.’” Then the people bowed themselves and worshipped.

28 So, the children of Israel went and did as the LORD had commanded Moses and Aaron. So did they.

29 Now at midnight, the LORD struck all the firstborn in the land of Egypt— from the firstborn of Pharaoh who sat on his throne to the firstborn of the captive that was in prison—and all the firstborn of beasts.

30 And Pharaoh rose up in the night, he and all his servants and all the Egyptians. And there was a great cry in Egypt. For there was no house where there was not one dead.

31 And he sent word to Moses and to Aaron by night, saying, “Rise up! Get out from among my people—both you and the children of Israel—and go serve the LORD as you have said.

32 “Also, take your sheep and your cattle (as you have said) and depart. And bless me also.”

33 And the Egyptians urged the people to send them out of the land in haste. For they said, “We shall all die.”

34 Therefore, the people took their dough before it was leavened, with their bowls bound up in clothing upon their shoulders.

35 And the children of Israel did according to the saying of Moses. And they asked for articles of silver and articles of gold and clothing from the Egyptians.

36 And the LORD gave the people favor in the sight of the Egyptians. And they granted their request. So, they plundered the Egyptians.

37 Then the children of Israel took their journey from Rameses to Succoth, about six hundred thousand men on foot, besides children.

38 And a great mixed multitude of people went out with them, as well as flocks and herds and cattle in great abundance.

39 And they baked the dough which they brought out of Egypt and made unleavened cakes (for it was not leavened because they were thrust out of Egypt and could not linger, nor could they prepare provisions for themselves).

40 So, the dwelling of the children of Israel, while they dwelled in Egypt, was four hundred and thirty years.

41 And when the four hundred and thirty years had expired—on that very same day— all the hosts of the LORD departed out of the land of Egypt.

42 It is a night to be kept holy to the LORD, because He brought them out of the land of Egypt. This is the night of the LORD which all the children of Israel must keep throughout their generations.

43 Also, the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the Law of the Passover: No stranger shall eat thereof.

44 “But, every servant that is bought for money, when you have circumcised him, then shall he eat thereof.

45 “A stranger or a hired servant shall not eat thereof.

46 “It shall be eaten in one house. You shall carry none of the flesh out of the house, nor shall you break a bone thereof.

47 “All the Congregation of Israel shall observe it.

48 “But, if a stranger who dwells with you wishes to observe the Passover of the LORD, let him circumcise all the males who belong to him; and then let him come and observe it. And he shall be as one who was born in the land. For no uncircumcised person shall eat thereof.

49 “One Law shall be for him who is born in the land and to the stranger who dwells among you.”

50 Then all the children of Israel did as the LORD commanded Moses and Aaron. So did they.

51 And that same day, the LORD brought the children of Israel out of the land of Egypt by their armies.

13 And the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Sanctify to Me all the firstborn (each one among the children of Israel who first opens the womb), both of man and of beast. It is Mine.”

Then Moses said to the people, “Remember this day, on which you came out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage. For by a mighty hand the LORD brought you out from there. Therefore, no leavened bread shall be eaten.

“You came out on this day, in the month of Abib.

“Now, when the LORD has brought you into the land of the Canaanites, and Hittites, and Amorites, and Hivites, and Jebusites, (which He swore to your fathers that He would give you, a land flowing with milk and honey) then you shall keep this service, in this month.

“For seven days, you shall eat unleavened bread. And the seventh day shall be the Feast of the LORD.

“Unleavened bread shall be eaten for seven days; and no leavened bread shall be seen with you, nor shall leaven be seen with you in all your quarters.

“And you shall show your son on that day, saying, ‘This is because of that which the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.’

“And it shall be a sign to you upon your hand, and for a remembrance between your eyes, so that the Law of the LORD may be in your mouth. For by a strong hand, the LORD brought you out of Egypt.

10 “Therefore, keep this ordinance in its appointed season from year to year.

11 “And when the LORD shall bring you into the land of the Canaanites, as he swore to you and to your fathers (and shall give it to you),

12 “then you shall set apart to the LORD all that first opens the womb. Also, of everything that first opens the womb and comes forth from your beast, the males shall be the LORD’s.

13 “But you shall redeem every first foal of a donkey with a lamb. And if you do not redeem him, then you shall break his neck. Likewise, the firstborn of man among your sons you shall redeem.

14 “And when your son shall ask you tomorrow, saying, ‘What is this?’ You shall then say to him, ‘With a mighty hand, the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage.

15 ‘For when Pharaoh was hard-hearted against our departing, the LORD then killed all the firstborn in the land of Egypt, from the firstborn of man to the firstborn of beast. Therefore, I sacrifice to the LORD all the males who first open the womb. But all the firstborn of my sons I redeem.’

16 “And it shall be as a sign upon your hand, and as frontlets between your eyes, that the LORD brought us out of Egypt by a mighty hand.”

17 Now, when Pharaoh had let the people go, God did not carry them by the way of the Philistines’ country, though it were nearer. (For God said, ‘Lest the people repent when they see war, and turn again to Egypt’).

18 But God made the people go by way of the wilderness of the Red Sea. And the children of Israel went up in battle array, out of the land of Egypt.

19 And Moses took the bones of Joseph with him. For he had made the children of Israel swear, saying, ‘God will surely visit you. And you shall take my bones with you, away from here.’

20 So they took their journey from Succoth and camped in Etham, on the edge of the wilderness.

21 And the LORD went before them by day in a pillar of a cloud to lead the way, and by night in a pillar of fire to give them light, so that they might go both by day and by night.

22 He did not take away the pillar of the cloud by day, nor the pillar of fire by night, from before the people.

14 Then the LORD spoke to Moses, saying,

“Speak to the children of Israel, so that they return and camp before Pihahiroth, between Migdol and the sea, and before Baal Zephon. You shall camp in front of it, by the sea.

“For Pharaoh will say of the children of Israel, ‘They are aimless in the land. The wilderness has shut them in.’

“And I will harden Pharaoh’s heart, so that he shall follow after you. So, I will gain honor over Pharaoh, and upon all his army. Also, the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD.” And they did so.

Then, the king of Egypt was told that the people fled. And the heart of Pharaoh and of his servants was turned against the people. And they said, “Why have we done this, and have let Israel go out of our service?”

And he prepared his chariots and took his people with him,

and took six hundred chosen chariots and all the chariots of Egypt and captains over every one of them.

(For the LORD had hardened the heart of Pharaoh, King of Egypt, and he followed after the children of Israel. But the children of Israel went out with boldness).

And the Egyptians and all the horses and chariots of Pharaoh pursued after them. And his horsemen and his army overtook them camping by the sea, beside Pihahiroth, before Baal Zephon.

10 And when Pharaoh drew near, the children of Israel lifted up their eyes. And behold, the Egyptians marched after them; and they were very afraid. Therefore, the children of Israel cried to the LORD.

11 And they said to Moses, “Have you brought us to die in the wilderness, because there were no graves in Egypt? Why have you served us like this, to carry us out of Egypt?

12 “Did we not tell you this thing in Egypt, saying, ‘Let us alone, so that we may serve the Egyptians?’ For it would have been better for us to serve the Egyptians than to die in the wilderness.”

13 Then Moses said to the people, “Do not fear. Stand still, and behold the salvation of the LORD, which He will show to you this day. For the Egyptians, whom you have seen this day, you shall never see again.

14 “The LORD shall fight for you. Therefore, hold your peace.”

15 And the LORD said to Moses, “Why do you cry to me? Speak to the children of Israel, so that they go forward.

16 “And lift up your rod and stretch out your hand upon the sea and divide it; and let the children of Israel go on dry ground through the midst of the sea.

17 “And I, behold, I will harden the heart of the Egyptians, so that they may follow them. And I will gain honor from Pharaoh, and from all his army, from his chariots, and from his horsemen.

18 “Then, the Egyptians shall know that I am the LORD, when I have gained honor from Pharaoh, from his chariots, and from his horsemen.”

19 And the Angel of God, who went before the host of Israel, moved and went behind them. Also, the pillar of the cloud went from preceding them to standing behind them,

20 and came between the camp of the Egyptians and the camp of Israel. It was both a cloud and darkness, yet it gave light by night, so that one did not come near the other, all night long.

21 And Moses stretched forth his hand upon the sea; and the LORD caused the sea to recede by a strong east wind, all that night, and made the sea dry. For the waters were divided.

22 Then, the children of Israel went through the midst of the sea, upon the dry ground; and the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left hand.

23 And the Egyptians pursued and went after them into the midst of the sea, all Pharaoh’s horses, his chariots, and his horsemen.

24 Now, in the morning watch, the LORD looked upon the army of the Egyptians, and out of the fiery and cloudy pillar, He struck the army of the Egyptians with fear.

25 For he turned aside their chariot wheels and they drove them with great difficulty, so that all the Egyptians said, “I will flee from the face of Israel; for the LORD fights for them against the Egyptians.”

26 Then the LORD said to Moses, “Stretch your hand upon the sea, so that the waters may return upon the Egyptians, upon their chariots and upon their horsemen.”

27 Then Moses stretched forth his hand upon the sea, and the sea returned to full force early in the morning; and the Egyptians fled against it. But the LORD overthrew the Egyptians in the midst of the sea.

28 So, the water returned and covered the chariots. And of the horsemen, and of all the army of Pharaoh that came into the sea after them, there remained not one of them.

29 But the children of Israel walked upon dry land through the midst of the sea. And the waters were a wall to them on their right hand and on their left.

30 Thus, the LORD saved Israel from the hand of the Egyptians that day. And Israel saw the Egyptians dead upon the seashore.

31 And Israel saw the mighty power which the LORD showed upon the Egyptians. So, the people feared the LORD and believed the LORD and his servant Moses.

15 Then Moses and the children of Israel sang this song to the LORD, and spoke, saying, “I will sing to the LORD. For He has triumphed gloriously! The horse, and he who rode upon him, He has overthrown in the sea!

“The LORD is my strength and praise; and He has become my salvation. He is my God; and I will prepare a tabernacle for Him. He is my father’s God; and I will exalt Him.

“The LORD is a man of war. His Name is Jehovah.

“He has cast Pharaoh’s chariots and his army into the sea. His chosen captains were also drowned in the Red Sea.

“The depths have covered them. They sank to the bottom, as a stone.

“Your right hand, O LORD, is glorious in power. Your right hand, O LORD, has bruised the enemy.

“And in Your great Glory You have overthrown those who rose against You. You sent forth Your wrath, which consumed them as stubble.

“And by the blast of Your nostrils the waters were gathered. The floods stood still as a heap. The depths congealed together in the heart of the sea.

“The enemy said, ‘I will pursue! I will overtake them! I will divide the spoil! My lust shall be satisfied by them. I will draw my sword. My hand shall destroy them!’

10 “You blew with Your wind. The sea covered them; they sank as lead in the mighty waters.

11 “Who is like You, O LORD, among the gods! Who is like You—glorious in holiness, fearful in praises—doing wonders!

12 “You stretched out Your right hand. The Earth swallowed them.

13 “You will, by Your mercy, carry this people whom You delivered. In Your strength, You will bring them to Your holy habitation.

14 “The people shall hear and be afraid. Sorrow shall come upon the inhabitants of Philistia.

15 “Then the princes of Edom shall be amazed; and trembling shall come upon the great men of Moab. All the inhabitants of Canaan shall grow faint- hearted.

16 “Fear and dread shall fall upon them. Because of the greatness of Your arm, they shall be still as a stone until Your people pass, O LORD, until this people pass whom You have purchased.

17 “You shall bring them in and plant them on the mountain of Your inheritance, O LORD. You have prepared the dwelling place, O LORD, the sanctuary Your hands shall establish.

18 “The LORD shall reign forever and ever!”
