A Ritual for Sacrifices[a]

Regulations for the Children of Israel

Chapter 1

Burnt Offerings.[b] The Lord spoke to Moses from the meeting tent and said to him,[c] “Speak to the children of Israel and tell them: When any one of you brings an offering to the Lord, you shall bring your animal from the herd or the flock. If the offering is a burnt offering from the herd, let him offer a male without defect. He shall offer it at the entrance to the meeting tent, that it might be pleasing to the Lord. He shall lay his hand on the head of the burnt offering, and it will be accepted for atonement on his behalf. He shall kill the young bull before the Lord, and the priests, the sons of Aaron, shall take its blood and sprinkle it on the altar that is at the entrance to the meeting tent.[d] He shall skin the burnt offering and cut it into pieces. The sons of Aaron, the priests shall set a fire on the altar and arrange the wood upon the fire. Then the sons of Aaron, the priests shall place the pieces of the animal, and its head and its fat, on the burning wood upon the altar. He shall wash the entrails and the legs with water. Then the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.

10 “If the burnt offering is from the flock, a sheep or a goat, he shall offer a male without defect. 11 He shall slay it on the northern side of the altar before the Lord. The priests, the sons of Aaron, shall sprinkle its blood around the altar. 12 He shall cut it into pieces, and the priest shall take them, together with its head and its fat, and lay them upon the wood which is burning upon the altar. 13 He shall wash the entrails and the legs with water, and then the priest shall burn all of it on the altar as a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.

14 “If the burnt offering to the Lord consists of birds,[e] then let him bring his offering of turtledoves or young pigeons. 15 The priest shall bring them to the altar and wring off their heads. He shall burn them upon the altar, but their blood is to be drained out on the side of the altar. 16 He shall tear out their crops with their feathers and toss them to the east side of the altar, the place where the ashes are kept. 17 He shall split the birds into two halves holding on to their wings, but he shall not separate the pieces. Then the priest shall burn them on the burning wood upon the altar. It is a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.

Chapter 2

Grain Offerings.[f] “When anyone brings a grain offering as a sacrifice to the Lord, it is to be an offering of fine flour. He shall pour oil upon it and put incense on it and bring it to the sons of Aaron, the priests. He shall take a handful of the flour and the oil and all of the incense. The priest shall burn it on the altar as a memorial portion, a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.[g] The rest of the grain offering will be for Aaron and his sons, the most holy part[h] of the burnt offering to the Lord.

“When someone brings a cereal offering that has been baked in the oven, it is to be unleavened cakes made of fine flour mixed with oil or unleavened wafers sprinkled with oil. If your cereal offering was prepared on the griddle, it is to be made of fine flour that has been mixed with oil. You shall break it into pieces and pour oil on it. It is a cereal offering. If the cereal offering was prepared in a pan, it is to be made of fine flour with oil. You shall bring your cereal offering made of these things to the priest who will bring it to the altar. Then the priest shall take the memorial portion from the cereal offering and burn it on the altar. It will be a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord. 10 The rest of the cereal offering will be for Aaron and his sons. It is the most holy part of the burnt offering to the Lord.

11 “None of the cereal offerings that you offer to the Lord will be leavened, for you are not to make burnt offerings of leaven or honey[i] to the Lord. 12 As to the offering of firstfruits, you may bring them to the Lord, but you are not to bring them to the altar as a pleasing fragrance. 13 You are to season all of your cereal offerings with salt. You shall not permit your cereal offerings to be offered without the salt of your covenant.[j] You shall bring salt with all of your offerings.

14 “If you offer a cereal offering of firstfruits to the Lord, you shall offer the cereal offering of firstfruits in the form of crushed grain from newly ripened heads of grain that have been parched with fire. 15 You shall pour oil on it, and place incense upon it. It is a cereal offering. 16 Then the priest shall burn a part of the grain and of the oil and all of the incense as the memorial portion of the offering. It is a burnt offering to the Lord.

Chapter 3

Peace Offerings.[k] “If the offering is a peace offering, if someone offers a young cow, whether it be male or female, it is to be without defect. He shall offer it to the Lord. He shall lay his hand on the head of the offering and slay it at the entrance to the meeting tent. The sons of Aaron, the priests, shall sprinkle its blood around the altar. From the peace offering he shall offer up the following as a burnt offering to the Lord: the fat above and surrounding the entrails, the two kidneys and their fat, the fat around the loins, and the lobe of the liver that he will detach along with the kidneys. The sons of Aaron shall burn it on the altar, on the burnt offering[l] that is on the burning wood. It is a burnt offering, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord.

“If one’s peace offering to the Lord is from the flock, whether it be male or female, it is to be without defect. If he presents a lamb as an offering, he shall offer it before the Lord. He shall lay his hand on the head of the victim and slay it in front of the meeting tent. The sons of Aaron shall sprinkle its blood around the altar. From the peace offering he shall offer up the following as a burnt offering to the Lord: the fat, the entire fat of the tail, cutting it away from the end of the backbone, the fat around the entrails and all that is above them, 10 the two kidneys with their fat and the fat around the loins, and the lobe of the liver that he will detach along with the kidneys. 11 Then the priest shall burn them on the altar as food offered up to the Lord by fire.

12 “If his offering is a goat, he shall offer it before the Lord. 13 He shall lay his hand on its head and slay it in front of the meeting tent. The sons of Aaron will sprinkle its blood around the altar. 14 From it he will offer up the following as a burnt offering to the Lord: the fat covering and above its entrails, 15 its two kidneys with their fat, the fat around the loins, and the lobe of the liver that he will detach along with the kidneys. 16 Then the priest shall burn them on the altar as food offered to the Lord by fire. All fat belongs to the Lord.

17 “It will be a perpetual statute throughout all your generations in all of your dwellings: you must not eat fat or blood.”

Chapter 4[m]

Sin Offerings.[n] The Lord said to Moses, “Speak to the children of Israel and say: If anyone unknowingly sins against one of the commandments of the Lord, doing one of the things he was not supposed to do,

For an Anointed Priest. “if it be an anointed priest who has sinned, thus bringing guilt upon the people, let him offer up a young bull without defect as a sin offering to the Lord. He shall bring the young bull before the Lord at the entrance to the meeting tent, and will lay his hand on the head of the young bull and slay it before the Lord. The priest who has been anointed shall take the blood of the young bull and carry it into the meeting tent. He will dip his finger into the blood and sprinkle some of the blood seven times before the Lord in front of the sanctuary veil. The priest shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of incense which is before the Lord in the meeting tent. He shall pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offerings which is at the entrance to the meeting tent. He shall take all of the fat that is around the entrails and all the fat that is above, the two kidneys and their fat, the fat around the loins, and the lobe of the liver that he will detach along with the kidneys. 10 He shall do just as he does with the ox of the sacrifice of a peace offering. He shall burn it all upon the altar of burnt offerings. 11 But as to the skin of the young bull, the meat with its head, the entrails, the legs and the dung, 12 that is, the young bull, he shall carry it outside of the camp to a pure place,[o] where they throw the ashes. He shall burn it upon a wood fire, in the place where they throw the ashes.

13 For the Whole Assembly.“If the whole assembly of Israel unknowingly commits a sin, for the thing was not clear to them, and they do one of the things that they were commanded by the Lord not to do and they incur guilt, 14 when they realize their sin, the assembly shall offer as a sin offering a young bull and bring it in front of the meeting tent. 15 The elders of the community shall lay their hands on the head of the young bull and they shall slay it before the Lord. 16 The priest who has been anointed shall take the blood of the young bull inside of the tent of meeting. 17 The priest shall dip his finger in the blood and sprinkle the blood seven times before the Lord in front of the veil. 18 He shall put some of the blood on the horns of the altar of incense which is before the Lord in the meeting tent. He will pour the rest of the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offerings which is at the entrance to the meeting tent. 19 He shall take all of its fat and burn it on the altar. 20 He shall perform the same ceremony with this young bull as with the offering of a sin offering: all done the same way. The priest shall make atonement for them, and they will be forgiven.[p] 21 Then he shall carry the young bull outside the camp and burn it as he burned the first young bull. It is a sin offering for the assembly.

22 For a Leader.“When a leader has sinned, unknowingly doing any one of the things that the Lord God has commanded not to do, and he is guilty, 23 when he comes to know of the sin that he has committed, he shall bring as an offering a kid he-goat without defect. 24 He shall lay his hand on the head of the goat and slay it in the place where they slay burnt offerings before the Lord. It is a sin offering. 25 The priest shall take the blood of the sin offering with his finger and he shall put it on the horns of the altar of burnt offerings. He shall pour the rest of the blood at the base of the altar of burnt offerings. 26 He shall then burn every fat part on the altar like the fat of a peace offering. The priest shall make atonement for his sin and he shall be forgiven.

27 For the Common People.“If any of the common people has unknowingly sinned, doing any one of the things that the Lord has commanded them not to do, and he is guilty, 28 when he comes to know of the sin that he has committed, he shall bring a she-goat as an offering, without defect, for the sin that he has committed. 29 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and slay it in the place of burnt offerings. 30 The priest shall take a bit of its blood with his finger and place it on the horns of the altar of burnt offerings. He shall then pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 31 He shall take out all of the fat parts, as one takes out all of the fat parts of a peace offering, and the priest shall burn them on the altar, a pleasing fragrance in honor of the Lord. The priest will make atonement for him and he shall be forgiven. 32 If he brings a lamb as a sin offering, he is to bring a female without defect. 33 He shall lay his hand on the head of the sin offering and he shall slay it in the place of burnt offerings. 34 The priest shall take a bit of the blood of the sin offering with his finger and he shall place it on the horns of the altar of burnt offerings. He shall then pour out the rest of the blood at the base of the altar. 35 He shall take out all of the fat parts, as one takes out the fat parts of a lamb in a peace offering, and he shall burn them on the altar upon the burnt offerings in honor of the Lord. The priest shall make atonement for him and the sin that he committed and he shall be forgiven.

Chapter 5

Other Ways to Atone. “If anyone sins in that he heard a call to testify and he is a witness, having seen or heard of the matter, and he does not make it known, then he shall bear his guilt. Or if anyone touches any unclean thing, whether it be the carcass of an unclean animal or the carcass of unclean cattle or the carcass of any unclean creeping thing, even if he did not know it, he shall be unclean and be held guilty. Or if he touches human uncleanness,[q] of whatever type of uncleanness one might touch and become unclean, and he did not know it, when he comes to know of it he shall be guilty. Or if someone rashly lets an oath slip from his lips, to do evil or to do good, in anything by which a person who swears a rash oath, and he does not realize it, when he comes to know it, he shall be guilty for any one of these thing s. Therefore, when someone is guilty of any one of these things, he shall confess the sin he has committed. He shall bring a guilt offering to the Lord for the sin that he has committed: a female goat or sheep from the flock as a sin offering. The priest shall make atonement for him and for his sin.

“If someone cannot afford a lamb, then he shall bring as his guilt offering to the Lord two turtledoves or two pigeons for the sin that he has committed. One will be for a sin offering and the other will be a burnt offering. He shall bring them to the priest who shall offer the first for the sin offering. He will wring its head from its neck, but he will not rip it apart. He shall sprinkle some of the blood of the sin offering on the sides of the altar, while the rest he shall pour out at the base of the altar. This is a sin offering. 10 The other bird will be offered as a burnt offering, following the normal procedure. Thus the priest shall make atonement for him, for the sin he has committed, and he shall be forgiven.

11 “But if he cannot afford two turtledoves or two young pigeons, let him bring a tenth of an ephah[r] of fine flour for his sin offering, as the offering for the sin he has committed. He shall not put any oil or incense upon it, for it is a sin offering. 12 He shall bring the flour to the priest who will take a handful of it as a memorial portion, burning it upon the altar, on the burnt offerings to the Lord. It is a sin offering. 13 Thus the priest shall make atonement for the sin he has committed in any one of these things and he shall be forgiven. The rest of the offering will be for the priest, as with the cereal offering.”

14 Guilt Offerings.[s] And the Lord said to Moses, 15 “If anyone commits a trespass against God and unknowingly sins against any of the holy things of the Lord, then he shall bring his guilt offering to the Lord. He shall bring a ram from the flock, without defect, for a guilt offering. It is to be worth a certain number of shekels of silver according to the measure of the shekel of the sanctuary. 16 He shall make amends for having sinned against the holy thing, and he shall add a fifth to its value and give it to the priest. The priest shall make atonement for him with the ram of the guilt offering, and he will be forgiven. 17 When someone sins and does any of the things that the Lord has forbidden, even if he does not realize he did it, he has still committed an offense and must bear his guilt. 18 He shall bring a ram without defect from the flock that is the value of the price of a guilt offering. The priest shall make atonement for the sin which he unknowingly committed and he shall be forgiven. 19 It is a guilt offering, for he was certainly guilty before the Lord.”

Chapter 6

Daily Sacrifices.[t] The Lord said to Moses, “If anyone sins against the Lord by lying to a neighbor concerning a deposit or a security entrusted to him, or by robbery, or by defrauding a neighbor, or by finding something that was lost and lying about it and swearing a false oath, in any of these things that men do, and thereby sin, when someone sins this way and has become guilty, he shall restore the stolen property that he took, or what he obtained through violence, or the deposit that was entrusted to him, or the lost object that he found, or anything about which he falsely swore an oath. He shall add a fifth to it and give it to the person to whom it belongs on the day of his guilt offering. He shall bring a guilt offering to the priest, a ram without defect from the flock which is the value of the price of a guilt offering. The priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord and he shall be forgiven of any of the things a person may do and thereby become guilty.”

Regulations for the Priests

Instructions for Burnt Offerings. The Lord said to Moses, “Command Aaron and his sons, saying: This is the law for burnt offerings. The burnt offering is to remain on the hearth of the altar all night, until the morning. The fire on the altar will be kept burning. 10 The priest shall wear his linen garment and have his linen undergarments over his flesh. He shall collect the ashes to which the fire has reduced the burnt offering on the altar and he will place them beside the altar. 11 Then he will take off those clothes and put on others and carry the ashes outside the camp to a clean place. 12 The fire on the altar will be kept burning; it will not be extinguished. The priest shall burn wood on it every morning, and he shall lay burnt offerings on it and burn the fat of the peace offerings upon it. 13 The fire must always be kept burning on the altar. It must never go out.

14 For Cereal Offerings.“This is the law concerning cereal offerings. The sons of Aaron shall offer them to the Lord in front of the altar. 15 The priest will take a handful of fine flour from it with the oil and all of the incense that is on the offering, and he shall burn all of it on the altar as a memorial portion, a pleasing fragrance to the Lord. 16 Aaron and his sons will eat whatever is left over from the cereal offering. They will eat it unleavened, in a holy place, in the courtyard of the meeting tent. 17 It must not be baked with leaven. I have assigned it to them as their portion of my offerings by fire. It is a most holy thing, like the sin offerings and the guilt offerings. 18 Every male from among the children of Aaron may eat it. This will be a perpetual statute for all of your generations concerning the Lord’s offerings by fire. Whoever touches them shall be holy.”[u]

19 The Lord said to Moses, 20 “Aaron and his sons are to make the following offerings to the Lord on the day that they are anointed: a tenth of an ephah of fine flour as a regular cereal offering, half in the morning and half in the evening. 21 It will be prepared in a pan with oil. You will bring it well mixed, in baked pieces, like a cereal offering. It shall be a pleasing fragrance to the Lord. 22 That priest from among the sons of Aaron who is anointed to succeed him shall also make this offering. It is a perpetual statute. It shall all be burned in honor of the Lord. 23 Every cereal offering made by a priest shall be burned. It cannot be eaten.”

24 For Sin Offerings. The Lord said to Moses, 25 “Speak to Aaron and his sons and tell them the following: ‘This is the law for sin offerings. The animal being offered for the sin offering shall be slain in the place where burnt offerings are slain, before the Lord. It is most holy. 26 The priest who offered it as a sin offering shall eat it in a holy place, in the courtyard of the meeting tent.[v] 27 Whatever touches the meat shall be holy. If some of the blood is spattered on some clothing, the clothing on which it is spattered shall be washed in a holy place. 28 The earthen vessel in which it is boiled is to be broken. If it has been cooked in a bronze vessel, that will be scoured and rinsed in water. 29 Every male of the priestly family may eat it; it is a most holy thing. 30 But no sin offering will be eaten when its blood was brought into the meeting tent to make atonement in the sanctuary. It will be entirely burned in fire.

Chapter 7

For Guilt Offerings. “ ‘This is the law for guilt offerings. It is most holy. The guilt offering will be slain where the burnt offerings are slain. He is to sprinkle its blood around the altar. He shall offer all of its fat: its fat tail, the fat that covers its entrails, the two kidneys with their fat, the fat around the loins, and the lobe of the liver that he will detach along with the kidneys. The priest shall burn all of this on the altar as a burnt offering to the Lord. It is a guilt offering. All of the males of the priestly family may eat it. They shall eat it in a holy place. It is most holy. The guilt offering is like the sin offering. The same law applies for both. It belongs to the priest who makes atonement with it. The priest shall also have the skin of any burnt offering he makes for anyone. Every cereal offering baked in an oven, or prepared on a pan or a grill, shall belong to the priest who has offered it. 10 Every cereal offering that is mixed with oil or is dry shall belong to all of the sons of Aaron, to all alike.

11 For Peace Offerings.[w]“ ‘This is the law for peace offerings that he shall offer unto the Lord. 12 If he is offering it as a sacrifice of thanksgiving, he shall offer unleavened cakes mixed with oil, and unleavened wafers with oil sprinkled on them, and fried cakes of fine flour mixed with oil together with his thanksgiving offering. 13 Besides these he shall also offer leavened bread with the sacrifice of thanksgiving of his peace offerings. 14 From them he shall offer one cake as a wave offering to the Lord. It will belong to the priest who sprinkled the blood of the peace offering. 15 The meat from the thanksgiving sacrifice must be eaten on the same day that it was offered. Nothing is be left over until the morning. 16 But if the offering is a vow offering or a freewill offering, it is be eaten on the day that it was offered, and the leftovers must be eaten the next day. 17 Whatever is still left over until the third day must be burned in the fire. 18 If someone eats the meat of a peace offering on the third day, the offering shall not be pleasing. It shall be of no benefit to the person who offered it. It shall be an abomination, and whoever eats of it shall bear the guilt of his iniquity. 19 Any meat that has come into contact with something unclean is not to be eaten. It is to be burned in the fire. All who are clean may eat the meat of a peace offering, 20 but the person who is unclean and who eats the meat of the peace offering to the Lord is to be cut off[x] from his people. 21 If anyone touches anything unclean, whether it be the uncleanness of a person or an unclean animal or any abominable, unclean thing and that person then eats the meat of the sacrifice of the peace offering, he shall be cut off from his people.’ ”

22 Things Forbidden. The Lord spoke again to Moses saying, 23 “Speak to the children of Israel and tell them: do not eat the fat of an ox or a sheep or a goat. 24 The fat of an animal that dies a natural death or an animal that has been torn apart by a wild animal can be used for any function, only it is not to be eaten. 25 Whoever eats the fat of an animal that has been offered to the Lord in fire will be cut off from his people. 26 You are not to eat blood in any of your dwellings, whether it be blood from a bird or from any other animal. 27 Whoever eats any animal’s blood shall be cut off from his people.”

28 Portions for the Priests. And the Lord spoke to Moses saying, 29 “Speak to the children of Israel and tell them, ‘Whoever offers the sacrifice of a peace offering to the Lord shall bring the offering of the sacrifice of the peace offering. 30 [y]He shall bring the offering to be made by fire to the Lord in his own hands. He shall bring the fat together with the breast, the breast that shall be waved before the Lord as a wave offering. 31 The priest shall burn the fat upon the altar, but the breast will be for Aaron and his sons. 32 He will also give the right shoulder of the sacrifice of his peace offering as a wave offering to the priest. 33 The son of Aaron who offers the blood and the fat of the peace offering will receive the right shoulder as his portion. 34 I have taken the breast of the wave offering and the right shoulder that is offered from the sacrifices of the peace offerings of the children of Israel, and I have given them to Aaron the priest and his sons. This is an eternal statute for the children of Israel.

35 “ ‘This is the portion consecrated to Aaron and the portion consecrated to his sons from the offerings made by fire to the Lord. They will receive them on the day that they present them ministering unto the Lord. 36 On the day that he anointed them, the Lord commanded that the children of Israel give this to them. It is a statute from one generation to the next.’ ” 37 These are the statutes concerning the burnt offerings, the grain offerings, the sin offerings, the guilt offerings and the consecration of the sacrifice of the peace offerings. 38 The Lord gave these commands to Moses on Mount Sinai on the day that he commanded the children of Israel to offer their oblations to the Lord when they were in the Desert of Sin.

Consecration of the Priesthood[z]

Chapter 8[aa]

Priestly Consecration. The Lord spoke to Moses saying, “Bring Aaron and his sons together with their garments,[ab] the oil of anointing, a young bull for a sin offering, two rams, and a basket of unleavened bread and gather the whole assembly together at the entrance to the tent of meeting.” Moses did as the Lord had commanded and the community was gathered together at the entrance to the tent of meeting. Moses said to the community, “This is what the Lord has commanded.”

Moses had Aaron and his sons draw near and he washed them with water. Then he put his coat on him and bound him with his sash. He put the ephod on him and bound him in the skillfully woven band of the ephod, wrapping it around him. He put his breastplate on him, and in the breastplate he placed the Urim and the Thummim. Then he placed the turban on his head, and on the front of the turban he placed the golden plate, the holy crown, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

10 Then Moses then took the oil of anointing, and he anointed and consecrated the tabernacle and everything that was in it. 11 He sprinkled some of it upon the altar seven times, anointing the altar and all of its accessories, as well as the basin and its base, to consecrate them. 12 He poured the oil of anointing on the head of Aaron and anointed Aaron, consecrating him. 13 Then Moses had the sons of Aaron draw near and he clothed them in their tunics. He bound them with their sashes and put their caps on their heads, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

14 The Sin Offering. He then had the young bull of the sin offering brought to him, and he had Aaron and his sons place their hands on the head of the young bull of the sin offering. 15 Moses slew it, took some of its blood, and with his finger put some of it on the horns around the altar to purify it. He poured the rest of the blood at the base of the altar and consecrated it, making atonement for it.

16 He took all of the fat that was around the entrails, the lobe of the liver, the two kidneys with their fat, and Moses burned all of them upon the altar. 17 But the young bull, its skin, its meat, and its manure were burned in a fire outside of the camp, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

18 The Burnt Offering. He brought the ram for the burnt offering and he had Aaron and his sons place their hands on the head of the ram. 19 Moses slew it and sprinkled its blood around the altar. 20 He cut the ram into pieces and he burned the head, its pieces, and the fat. 21 After he had washed its entrails and its legs with water, he burned the entire ram upon the altar, a burnt offering making a pleasant fragrance, a sacrifice by fire in honor of the Lord, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

22 The Ram of Consecration. Then he brought the second ram, the ram of consecration. Aaron and his sons placed their hands on the head of the ram. 23 Moses slew it and took its blood and placed it on the right ear lobe of Aaron and the thumb of his right hand and the big toe of his right foot.[ac] 24 Moses had the sons of Aaron approach him and he put some of the blood on their right ear lobes, on the thumbs of their right hands, and on the big toes of their right feet. He poured the rest of the blood around the altar. 25 He took the fat, the tail, the fat around its entrails, the lobe of the liver, the kidneys with their fat, and the right thigh. 26 He took an unleavened bread, a cake of bread with oil, and a wafer from the basket of unleavened bread that was before the Lord. He placed them on the fat and the right thigh. 27 He placed all of these things in the hands of Aaron and in the hands of his sons and they waved this wave offering before the Lord. 28 Moses took them out of their hands and burned them on the altar upon the burnt offerings. This is the sacrifice of consecration, a pleasant fragrance, a sacrifice consumed by fire in honor of the Lord. 29 Then Moses took the breast of the ram and waved it as a wave offering before the Lord. It was Moses’ portion of the ram of consecration, as the Lord had commanded Moses.

30 Moses took the oil of anointing and some of the blood that was on the altar and he sprinkled them upon Aaron and his clothes, and upon his sons and their clothes. Thus he consecrated Aaron and his clothes and his sons and their clothes. 31 Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Cook the meat at the entrance to the meeting tent and eat it with the bread that is in the basket of consecration, as I commanded saying, ‘Aaron and his sons will eat it.’ 32 Whatever is left over from the meat and the bread is to be burned in a fire. 33 [ad]You are not to go out from the entrance of the tent of meeting for seven days, until the days of your consecration are complete, for it will take seven days to consecrate you. 34 What was done today was what the Lord commanded so that an atonement might be made for you. 35 You shall remain for seven days at the entrance to the tent of meeting, day and night, observing the commandment of the Lord, lest you die, for thus I was commanded.” 36 Aaron and his sons did what the Lord had commanded through Moses.

Chapter 9[ae]

The Priests’ Offering. The eighth day[af] Moses summoned Aaron, his sons, and the elders of Israel and said to Aaron, “Take a young male calf for a sin offering and a ram for a burnt offering. Both are to be without defect. Offer them to the Lord. Say to the children of Israel, ‘Bring a kid goat as a sin offering, a calf and a lamb, both one-year-old, without defect, for a burnt offering, a bull and a ram for a peace offering, to burn them before the Lord, and a cereal offering mixed with oil, for today the Lord shall appear to you.’ ”

They brought them to the meeting tent as Moses had commanded. The whole community approached and stood before the Lord. [ag]Moses said, “Behold, this is what the Lord has commanded. Do it, and the glory of the Lord shall appear.”

Moses said to Aaron, “Come to the altar. Offer your sin offering and your burnt offering and make atonement for yourself and for your people. Present the people’s offering and make atonement for them, as the Lord has commanded.”

Aaron therefore drew near the altar and slew the calf of the sin offering, the offering for himself. His sons brought the blood to him and he dipped his finger in it and put it on the horns of the altar, pouring the rest of the blood out at the base of the altar. 10 They burned the fat, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver of the sin offering on the altar, as the Lord had commanded Moses. 11 They burned the meat and the skin on a fire outside of the camp. 12 They then slew the burnt offering. The sons of Aaron brought the blood to him and he sprinkled it around the altar. 13 They also brought the burnt offering to him. It was cut into pieces. He burned the pieces and the head upon the altar. 14 He washed the entrails and the legs and burned them upon the burnt offering on top of the altar.

15 The People’s Offering. They then presented the offering of the people. They brought the goat of the sin offering for the people. They slew it and offered it as a sin offering, as they had done with the first one. 16 After this they offered the second burnt offering according to custom.

17 They then presented the cereal offering. They took a handful and burned it upon the altar beside the morning burnt offering. 18 They slew the bull and the ram of the peace offering of the people. The sons of Aaron brought the blood and they poured it around the altar. 19 They brought the fat parts of the bull and the ram: the tail, the fat around the entrails, the kidneys, and the lobe of the liver. 20 They placed the fat upon the breasts. He burned them upon the altar. 21 Aaron waved the breasts and the right thigh as a wave offering before the Lord, in the manner that Moses had commanded.

The Lord’s Glory Revealed.

22 [ah]Aaron, raising his hands toward the people, blessed them, and, after he had sacrificed the sin offering, the burnt offering, and the peace offering, descended from the altar. 23 Moses and Aaron entered the meeting tent. They then went out and blessed the people, and the glory of the Lord appeared to all the people. 24 A fire came out from the presence of the Lord and it consumed the burnt offering and the fat upon the altar. All the people saw this. They cried out and fell upon their faces.

Chapter 10

The Death of Nadab and Abihu.[ai] Now Nadab and Abihu, the sons of Aaron, each took his censer. They put fire and incense into them and offered unholy fire before the Lord, not as he had prescribed for them. But a fire came out from the presence of the Lord and it devoured them and they died before the Lord. Moses therefore said to Aaron, “This is what the Lord has said, ‘I will show myself to be holy to those who draw near to me and I will be glorified before all of the people.’ ” Aaron therefore remained silent. Moses called Mishael and Elzaphan, the sons of Uzziel, the uncle of Aaron, and told them, “Come here and carry away your relatives from the sanctuary. Take them outside of the camp.” They drew near and carried them and their tunics away outside of the camp, as Moses had told them.

To Aaron, to Eleazar and Ithamar, his sons, Moses said, “Do not uncover the hair of your heads nor rend your garments, lest you die and lest the wrath of the Lord come upon the entire community. But let your brothers, the whole household of Israel, mourn the burning that the Lord kindled.[aj] Do not go out from the entrance of the meeting tent lest you die, for the oil of anointing of the Lord is upon you.” They did what Moses told them.

Prohibition against Wine. The Lord said to Aaron, “Do not drink wine or strong drink when you are to enter the tent of meeting, neither you nor your sons, lest you die. This will be a statute forever throughout all of your generations. 10 [ak]This is so that you can distinguish between what is holy and unholy, and between what is unclean and clean, 11 so that you can teach the children of Israel all of the statutes that the Lord gave through Moses.”

12 Consuming Holy Things. Then Moses said to Aaron and to Eleazar and Ithamar, the surviving sons of Aaron, “Take what is left over from the cereal offering after part has been offered by fire to the Lord, and eat it unleavened near the altar, for it is most holy. 13 You must eat it in a holy place, for it is the part assigned to you and to your sons from the sacrifices offered by fire in honor of the Lord, for thus I have been commanded. 14 The breast of the wave offering and the thigh that has been offered will also be eaten by you, your sons, and your daughters, in a clean place, for they have been assigned to you as your portion and your sons’ portion from the peace offerings of the children of Israel.

15 “They will take the thigh that is offered and the breast that is a wave offering together with the fat parts that are to be burned, and they will wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. This will be your portion and your sons’ portion as your right forever, just as the Lord has commanded.”

16 Now Moses diligently inquired about the goat of the sin offering and found out that it had been burned. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, the surviving sons of Aaron. He said, 17 “Why have you not eaten the sacrifice of the sin offering in a holy place, for it a most holy thing? It was given to you to bear the iniquity of the community, to make atonement before the Lord. 18 Behold, the blood of the offering was not brought inside of the sanctuary. You should have eaten it in the sanctuary as I ordered you.” 19 Aaron said to Moses, “Behold, today they brought their sin offering and their burnt offering before the Lord. After these things have happened to me, should I have eaten the sacrifice of the sin offering? Would this have been pleasing to the Lord?” 20 When Moses heard this, he was satisfied.

Norms Concerning Ritual Purity[al]

Chapter 11

Clean and Unclean Animals.[am] The Lord said to Moses and to Aaron, “Tell the children of Israel: These are the animals that you may eat from among all the animals upon the earth. You may eat any animal that has a cloven hoof and that eats its cud. From among those animals that chew their cud and have cloven hoofs, you shall not eat the following: camels, for it chews its cud but does not have a divided hoof, so it will be considered to be unclean; the rock badger, for it chews its cud but does not have a divided hoof, so it will be considered to be unclean; the hare, for it chews its cud but does not have a divided hoof, so it will be considered to be unclean; the pig, for its hoof is divided and is cloven hoofed, but it does not chew its cud, so it will be considered to be unclean. You shall not eat their meat nor shall you touch their carcasses. They will be considered to be unclean.

“These are the animals that you may eat that live in the water: you may eat anything that has fins and scales in the seas or the rivers. 10 But all the animals that move through the water, whether seas or rivers, that do not have fins or scales will be considered to be an abomination.

11 “They will be an abomination for you. You shall not eat their meat and you shall consider their carcasses to be an abomination. 12 Everything in the water that does not have fins and scales will be an abomination for you.

13 “Among birds the following will be considered to be an abomination; they will not be eaten for they are an abomination: the eagle, the bearded vulture and the osprey, 14 the vulture and every type of falcon, 15 every type of raven, 16 the ostrich, the nighthawk, the sea gull, and every type of hawk, 17 the owl, the cormorant, the ibis, 18 the swan, the pelican, the carrion vulture, 19 the stork, every kind of heron, the hoopoe, and the bat.

20 “All winged creatures that crawl upon four legs will be considered to be an abomination for you. 21 Yet from among the insects that walk upon all fours, you may eat those that have two legs above their feet to jump upon the earth. 22 Therefore, you may eat the following: all kinds of locusts, every kind of bald locust, every kind of grasshopper, and every kind of cricket. 23 But every other flying insect that has four feet will be considered to be an abomination.

24 “By these you shall become unclean, whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean until the evening 25 and whoever carries their carcasses must wash his clothes and shall be unclean until the evening. 26 You shall consider every animal to be unclean that has undivided hoofs and does not chew its cud. Whoever touches them shall be unclean. 27 Every animal that walks upon all fours and walks upon its paws will be unclean to you. Whoever touches their carcasses shall be considered to be unclean until the evening. 28 Whoever carries their carcasses must wash his clothes and shall be considered to be unclean until the evening. These animals will be considered to be unclean.

29 [an]“These are the animals that crawl upon the earth that will be considered to be unclean: the weasel, the mouse, every kind of tortoise, 30 the gecko, the crocodile, the lizard, the snail, and the chameleon. 31 These creeping things will be unclean for you. Whoever touches their dead bodies will be considered to be unclean until the evening. 32 Anything upon which one of these falls when it is dead will be considered to be unclean, whether it be a wooden vessel or clothing or a skin or a sack, no matter what it is made of. It is to be washed in water and will be considered to be unclean until the evening. Then it will be clean. 33 If one of them falls into an earthen vessel, whatever it contains, it will be considered to be unclean, and it will be broken. 34 Any food upon which water falls will be considered to be unclean. Any liquid that can be drunk in any vessel will be considered to be unclean. 35 Everything upon which any part of their carcass falls will be considered to be unclean. Ovens and stoves will be smashed. They are unclean, and will be held to be unclean by you. 36 But a spring or a cistern where water is stored will be clean. Whoever touches their carcasses shall be unclean. 37 If any part of their carcasses falls upon seed for sowing, it will still be clean. 38 But if water falls on the seed and part of their carcasses falls on it, it is unclean to you.

39 “If an animal dies that was intended for food, whoever touches its carcass shall be unclean until the evening. 40 Whoever eats some of its carcass shall wash his clothes and shall be unclean until the evening. Whoever picks up its carcass shall wash his clothes and shall be unclean until the evening.

41 “Every creeping thing that crawls upon the earth will be an abomination. It will not be eaten. 42 Everything that goes about upon its belly, and everything that goes about upon on all four legs, and everything that has many feet, hence, any of the creeping things that crawl upon the earth, are not to be eaten, for they are an abomination. 43 You shall not make yourselves abominable with any of the creeping things that crawl, nor shall you defile yourselves because of them, lest you make yourselves unclean.

44 [ao]“I am the Lord, your God. Consecrate yourselves and be holy for I am holy.[ap] You will not defile yourselves with any of the creeping things that crawl upon the earth. 45 I am the Lord who brought you out of the land of Egypt to be your God. Therefore, be holy, for I am holy.

46 “This is the law concerning animals and birds and every living creature that moves in the water and everything that crawls upon the earth, 47 so that you might know the difference between that which is unclean and that which is clean, between the animals that you can eat and those that you should not eat.”

Chapter 12

Purification after Childbirth.[aq] The Lord said to Moses, “Say to the children of Israel: When a woman becomes pregnant and gives birth to a male child, she shall be considered to be unclean for seven days, just as when she menstruates. On the eighth day the flesh of his foreskin will be circumcised. Then she shall continue for thirty-three days in the blood of her purifying. She shall not touch any holy thing nor shall she enter into the sanctuary until the days of her purification are complete. But if she gives birth to a girl, she shall be unclean for two weeks as during her menstruation. She shall continue in the blood of her purifying for sixty-six days.[ar]

“When the days of her purification for a son or a daughter are complete, she shall bring a year-old lamb as a burnt offering and a pigeon or a turtledove as a sin offering to the priest at the entrance to the meeting tent. He shall offer it before the Lord and make atonement for her. She shall be cleansed from the flow of her blood. This is the law for a woman who has borne a male or female child. If she cannot afford to offer a lamb, she shall offer two turtledoves or two young pigeons, one for a burnt offering and the other for a sin offering. The priest shall make atonement for her and she shall be clean.”[as]

Chapter 13

Infections of the Skin.[at] The Lord said to Moses and to Aaron, “When someone has a swelling or a scab or a spot on his skin, and it turns out to be leprosy, then he shall be brought to the priest Aaron or one of his sons who is a priest. The priest shall examine the diseased spot on his skin. If the hair of the diseased spot has become white and the sore seems to be deeper than the surface of the skin, then the disease is leprosy. When the priest has examined it, he shall pronounce him unclean. But if the spot on his skin is white and is not deeper than the skin and the hair on it has not become white, the priest shall quarantine the person with the sore for seven days. On the seventh day the priest shall examine that person again. If he sees that the sore has not changed, and the sore has not spread, he shall quarantine that person for another seven days. The priest shall examine that person again on the seventh day. If the sore has darkened, and the sore has not spread, then the priest shall declare that person clean. It was only a scab. He shall wash his clothes and shall be considered to be clean. But if the scab spreads after the priest has examined him and declared him to be clean, then he must be examined by the priest again. The priest shall examine it, and if the sore has spread, the priest shall pronounce him to be unclean for it is leprosy.

“When a person has a leprous sore, he shall be brought to the priest 10 and the priest shall examine him. If there is a white bump on the skin and the hair on it has turned white, and there is tender, raw flesh on the bump, 11 then it is a chronic leprosy of the skin of his body. The priest shall declare him unclean, but he shall not quarantine him for he is unclean. 12 If the leprosy breaks out upon the skin so that the leprosy covers all of the skin of the diseased person wherever the priest examined him, from head to foot, 13 then the priest shall examine the person whose flesh is covered with leprosy. He shall declare him clean when it has all turned white, for he is clean. 14 But when some raw skin appears on him, he shall be held to be unclean. 15 The priest, when he sees the raw skin, shall declare him unclean. The raw skin is unclean; it is leprosy. 16 But if the raw skin becomes white, then he shall come before the priest 17 and the priest shall examine him. If he sees that the sore has turned white, the priest shall declare the person with the sore to be clean, for he is clean.

18 “When someone has a boil on the skin that has healed, 19 and then a whitish-red bump or spot appears where the boil was, he shall show it to the priest. 20 The priest shall examine it. If he sees that it is deeper than the skin and the hair has turned white, then the priest shall declare him to be unclean. It is a leprous sore that has broken out from the boil. 21 But if the priest, upon examining it, sees that it does not have white hair and it is not deeper than the skin, but rather it is a bit darker, then the priest shall quarantine him for seven days. 22 If it spreads over the skin, then the priest shall declare him to be unclean, for the spot is leprous. 23 But if the spot stays put and does not spread, then it is a scar from the boil and the priest shall declare him to be clean.

24 “When someone has a burn, and the raw burn becomes a reddish-white spot, 25 then the priest shall examine it. If the hair of the spot has turned white and it appears to be deeper than the skin, then it is leprosy. It has broken out of the burn. The priest shall declare him unclean, for it is a leprous sore. 26 But if the priest examines it and there is no white hair on the spot and it is not deeper than the skin, but is a bit darker, then the priest shall quarantine him for seven days. 27 On the seventh day the priest shall examine him again. If it has spread over the skin, then the priest shall pronounce him to be unclean. It is a leprous sore. 28 But if the spot has remained where it was and it has not spread on the skin, but it is somewhat darker, then it is only the swelling of a burn. The priest shall declare him to be clean, because it is only the scar from a burn.

29 “When a man or a woman has a sore on the head or the beard, 30 the priest will examine the sore. If it is deeper than the skin and the hair on it is yellow and thin, then the priest shall pronounce it to be unclean. It is the scab of leprosy of the head or the beard. 31 But if the priest examines the scab and it is not deeper than the skin and there is no black hair on it, then the priest shall quarantine the person with the scab for seven days. 32 On the seventh day the priest shall examine the sore. If the scab has not spread and there is no yellow hair on it, and the scab does not appear to be deeper than the skin, 33 then the man shall be shaven, but the scab is not to be shaved. He is to be quarantined another seven days. 34 On the seventh day the priest shall examine the scab. If the scab has not spread on the skin and it does not appear to be deeper than the skin, then the priest shall declare him to be clean. He shall wash his clothes, for he is clean. 35 But if the scab spreads after his cleansing, 36 the priest shall examine him. If the scab has spread, the priest need not look for yellow hair. He is unclean. 37 But if, from his viewpoint, the scab has not grown larger and black hair has grown upon it, then the scab is clean. The priest shall declare him clean. 38 When a man or a woman has white spots on the skin of the body, 39 the priest shall examine that person. If the spots on the skin of the body are dull white, it is only a skin rash. The person is clean.

40 “When a man has lost the hair on his head and he is bald, he is clean. 41 If he has lost the hair from the front of his head, and he has a bald forehead, he is clean. 42 But if there is a white reddish sore on his bald head or his bald forehead, it is leprosy that has broken out on his bald head or his bald forehead. 43 The priest shall examine him. If the swollen sore on his bald head or his bald forehead is reddish-white, looking like leprosy on the skin, 44 then he has leprosy and he is unclean. The priest shall declare him unclean because of the sore on his head.

45 [au]“Anyone who is infected with leprosy shall wear torn clothes, his head is to be uncovered, and he is to cover his moustache. He shall cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean!’ 46 As long as he is infected, he shall be utterly unclean. He will live alone; his dwelling shall be outside of the camp.

47 Infections in Fabrics.“When a garment has a leprous mark on it, whether it be a woolen garment or a linen garment, 48 whether it is in the weave or the knit of the wool or the linen, or if it is a skin or anything made of a skin, 49 if there is a green or red spot on the garment or the skin, whether in the weave or the knit or on anything made of skin, it is to be considered a mark of leprosy and it is to be shown to the priest. 50 The priest shall look at the spot, and shall secure that thing that is infected for seven days. 51 He shall examine the mark on the seventh day. If the spot on the garment has spread, whether it be in the weave or the knit, or on the skin or on anything that is made of skin, then the spot is an active leprosy. It is unclean. 52 He shall burn the garment, whether the spot is in the weave or the knit, whether it is made of wool or linen or is anything made of skin. It has an active leprosy, and it shall be burned in the fire. 53 But if the priest examines it and the spot has not spread on the garment, either in the weave or the knit or on anything made of skin, 54 then the priest shall order that the thing with the mark be washed,[av] and he shall secure it for seven more days. 55 The priest shall examine the thing with the spot after it has been washed. If the color of the spot has not changed, even if it has not spread, it is unclean. It shall be burned in the fire whether the bare spot is on the inside or outside. 56 If the priest examines the garment and the spot has faded after the washing, then he shall tear it out of the garment, whether it be made of skin or woven or knitted. 57 But if it reappears on the garment, whether in the weave or the knit or on anything made of skin, it is spreading. Whatever is infected shall be burned in the fire. 58 The garment, whether of weave or knit or anything made of skin, that has been washed and no longer has the spot, shall be washed a second time and it will then be clean. 59 These are the statutes concerning infections of leprosy upon garments, whether woolen or linen, woven or knitted, or on anything made of skin, on how to declare it clean or to declare it unclean.”

Chapter 14

Purification of Skin Diseases. The Lord spoke to Moses saying, “This is the law for the day of the cleansing of a person with leprosy, when he is brought to the priest: The priest is to go outside of the camp and examine him. If the priest discovers that the sores of leprosy on the leper have been healed, the priest will order that two live, clean birds, cedar wood, scarlet yarn, and hyssop be brought to the person who is to be cleansed. The priest shall order that one of the birds be killed over fresh water that is in a clay pot. He is to take the live bird and dip the cedar wood, the scarlet yarn, the hyssop, and the live bird in the blood of the bird that was killed over the fresh water. He shall sprinkle the one who is to be declared cleansed seven times. He will then release the live bird in the open fields. The person who is being cleansed shall wash his clothes, shave off all his hair, and wash himself with water. He will then be considered to be clean. Thereafter he may come into the camp, but he shall stay outside of his tent for seven days. On the seventh day he shall shave off all of his hair. He must shave the hair off his head, his beard, his eyebrows, and the rest of his hair. He shall wash his clothes and bathe himself in water, and he shall then be clean.

10 “On the eighth day he shall take two male lambs without blemish and one ewe lamb, a year old, without blemish, and three-tenths of a portion of fine flour mixed with oil for a cereal offering, and a log measure of oil. 11 The priest who will purify the man to be made clean shall present him and these things before the Lord at the entrance to the tent of meeting. 12 The priest shall take one of the lambs and offer it along with the log measure of oil. This shall be a guilt offering. He shall wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. 13 He shall slay the lamb in the same place that he is going to slay the sin offering and the burnt offering, in the sanctuary, for the sin offering belongs to the priest just like the guilt offering. It is most holy. 14 [aw]The priest shall take some of the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the right ear lobe of the one who is being cleansed, as well as on the thumb of his right hand and the big toe of his right foot. 15 The priest shall take some oil from the log measure of oil and pour it into the palm of his own left hand. 16 The priest shall dip his right finger into the oil that is in his left hand. With his finger he shall sprinkle the oil seven times before the Lord. 17 The priest shall take the rest of the oil in his hand and put it on the right ear lobe of the one who is being cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the big toe of his right foot, and upon the blood of the guilt offering. 18 He shall pour the rest of the oil that is in his hand upon the head of the one who is being cleansed. The priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord. 19 The priest shall then offer the sin offering and make atonement for the uncleanness of the one who is being cleansed. Afterward he shall slay the burnt offering. 20 The priest shall offer the burnt offering and the cereal offering upon the altar. The priest shall make atonement for him, and he shall be clean.

21 A Poor Person’s Offerings.“If he is poor and cannot afford all this, then he shall bring one lamb for a guilt offering to be waved, to make atonement for him, and one-tenth a measure of fine flour mixed with oil for a cereal offering, and a log measure of oil, 22 and two turtledoves or two young pigeons, whichever he is able to obtain. One will be for a sin offering, and the other will be for a burnt offering. 23 He shall bring them to the priest on the eighth day of his cleansing, at the entrance to the tent of meeting before the Lord. 24 The priest shall take the lamb of the guilt offering and the log measure of oil, and the priest shall wave them as a wave offering before the Lord. 25 He shall slay the lamb of the guilt offering. The priest shall take the blood of the guilt offering and put it on the right ear lobe of the one who is being cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the big toe of his right foot. 26 The priest shall pour the oil into the palm of his own left hand. 27 The priest shall dip his right finger into the oil that is in his left hand. He shall sprinkle the oil with his finger seven times before the Lord. 28 The priest shall take the rest of the oil that is in his hand and put it on the right ear lobe of the one who is being cleansed, and upon the thumb of his right hand, and upon the big toe of his right foot, upon the places that he put the blood of the guilt offering. 29 He shall pour the rest of the oil in his hand upon the head of the one who is being cleansed. The priest shall make atonement for him before the Lord. 30 He shall offer one of the turtledoves or one of the young pigeons, whichever he is able to obtain. 31 Whatever he has, one of them will be offered as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering together with the cereal offering. The priest shall make atonement before the Lord for the one who is being cleansed.

32 “This is the law for the person who has leprosy and who cannot afford the things that are needed for cleansing.”
