The Flood Subsides
8 But (A)God remembered Noah and all the beasts and all the cattle that were with him in the ark; and (B)God caused a wind to pass over the earth, and the water subsided. 2 Also (C)the fountains of the deep and the [a]floodgates of the sky were closed, and (D)the rain from the sky was restrained; 3 and the water receded steadily from the earth, and at the end (E)of one hundred and fifty days the water decreased. 4 In the seventh month, on the seventeenth day of the month, (F)the ark rested upon the mountains of Ararat. 5 The water decreased steadily until the tenth month; in the tenth month, on the first day of the month, the tops of the mountains became visible.
6 Then it came about at the end of forty days, that Noah opened the (G)window of the ark which he had made; 7 and he sent out a raven, and it [b]flew here and there until the water was dried up [c]from the earth. 8 Then he sent out a dove from him, to see if the water was abated from the face of the land; 9 but the dove found no resting place for the sole of her foot, so she returned to him into the ark, for the water was on the [d]surface of all the earth. Then he put out his hand and took her, and brought her into the ark to himself. 10 So he waited yet another seven days; and again he sent out the dove from the ark. 11 The dove came to him toward [e]evening, and behold, in her [f]beak was a freshly picked olive leaf. So Noah knew that the water was abated from the earth. 12 Then he waited yet another seven days, and sent out (H)the dove; but she did not return to him again.
13 Now it came about in the (I)six hundred and first year, in the first month, on the first of the month, the water was dried up [g]from the earth. Then Noah removed the covering of the ark, and looked, and behold, the [h]surface of the ground was dried up. 14 In the second month, on the twenty-seventh day of the month, the earth was dry. 15 Then God spoke to Noah, saying, 16 “Go out of the ark, you and your wife and your sons and your sons’ wives with you. 17 Bring out with you every living thing of all flesh that is with you, birds and animals and every creeping thing that creeps on the earth, that they may [i](J)breed abundantly on the earth, and be fruitful and multiply on the earth.” 18 So Noah went out, and his sons and his wife and his sons’ wives with him. 19 Every beast, every creeping thing, and every bird, everything that moves on the earth, went out [j]by their families from the ark.
20 Then Noah built (K)an altar to the Lord, and took of every (L)clean animal and of every clean bird and offered (M)burnt offerings on the altar. 21 The Lord (N)smelled the soothing aroma; and the Lord said [k]to Himself, “I will never again (O)curse the ground on account of man, for (P)the [l]intent of man’s heart is evil from his youth; (Q)and I will never again [m]destroy every living thing, as I have done.
22 “While the earth remains,
Seedtime and harvest,
And cold and heat,
And (R)summer and winter,
And (S)day and night
Shall not cease.”
Covenant of the Rainbow
9 And God blessed Noah and his sons and said to them, “(T)Be fruitful and multiply, and fill the earth. 2 The fear of you and the terror of you will be on every beast of the earth and on every bird of the [n]sky; with everything that creeps on the ground, and all the fish of the sea, into your hand they are given. 3 Every moving thing that is alive shall be food for you; I give all to you, (U)as I gave the green plant. 4 Only you shall not eat flesh with its life, that is, (V)its blood. 5 Surely I will require [o](W)your lifeblood; [p](X)from every beast I will require it. And [q]from every man, [r]from every man’s brother I will require the life of man.
6 “(Y)Whoever sheds man’s blood,
By man his blood shall be shed,
For (Z)in the image of God
He made man.
7 “As for you, (AA)be fruitful and multiply;
[s]Populate the earth abundantly and multiply in it.”
8 Then God spoke to Noah and to his sons with him, saying, 9 “Now behold, (AB)I Myself do establish My covenant with you, and with your [t]descendants after you; 10 and with every living creature that is with you, the birds, the cattle, and every beast of the earth with you; of all that comes out of the ark, even every beast of the earth. 11 I establish My covenant with you; and all flesh shall (AC)never again be cut off by the water of the flood, (AD)neither shall there again be a flood to destroy the earth.” 12 God said, “This is (AE)the sign of the covenant which I am making between Me and you and every living creature that is with you, for [u]all successive generations; 13 I set My (AF)bow in the cloud, and it shall be for a sign of a covenant between Me and the earth. 14 It shall come about, when I bring a cloud over the earth, that the bow will be seen in the cloud, 15 and (AG)I will remember My covenant, which is between Me and you and every living creature of all flesh; and (AH)never again shall the water become a flood to destroy all flesh. 16 When the bow is in the cloud, then I will look upon it, to remember the (AI)everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.” 17 And God said to Noah, “This is the sign of the covenant which I have established between Me and all flesh that is on the earth.”
18 Now the sons of Noah who came out of the ark were Shem and Ham and Japheth; and (AJ)Ham was the father of Canaan. 19 These three were the sons of Noah, and (AK)from these the whole earth was [v]populated.
20 Then Noah began [w]farming and planted a vineyard. 21 He drank of the wine and (AL)became drunk, and uncovered himself inside his tent. 22 Ham, the father of Canaan, (AM)saw the nakedness of his father, and told his two brothers outside. 23 But Shem and Japheth took a garment and laid it upon both their shoulders and walked backward and covered the nakedness of their father; and their faces were [x]turned away, so that they did not see their father’s nakedness. 24 When Noah awoke from his wine, he knew what his youngest son had done to him. 25 So he said,
26 He also said,
“(AP)Blessed be the Lord,
The God of Shem;
And let Canaan be [z]his servant.
27 “(AQ)May God enlarge Japheth,
And let him dwell in the tents of Shem;
And let Canaan be [aa]his servant.”
28 Noah lived three hundred and fifty years after the flood. 29 So all the days of Noah were nine hundred and fifty years, and he died.
Descendants of Noah
10 Now these are the records of the generations of Shem, Ham, and Japheth, the sons of Noah; and sons were born to them after the flood.
2 (AR)The sons of Japheth were (AS)Gomer and Magog and (AT)Madai and (AU)Javan and Tubal and (AV)Meshech and Tiras. 3 The sons of Gomer were (AW)Ashkenaz and [ab]Riphath and (AX)Togarmah. 4 The sons of Javan were Elishah and (AY)Tarshish, Kittim and [ac]Dodanim. 5 From these the coastlands of the nations [ad]were separated into their lands, every one according to his language, according to their families, into their nations.
6 (AZ)The sons of Ham were Cush and Mizraim and Put and Canaan. 7 The sons of Cush were (BA)Seba and Havilah and Sabtah and (BB)Raamah and Sabteca; and the sons of Raamah were (BC)Sheba and (BD)Dedan. 8 Now Cush [ae]became the father of Nimrod; he [af]became a mighty one on the earth. 9 He was a mighty hunter before the Lord; therefore it is said, “Like Nimrod a mighty hunter before the Lord.” 10 The beginning of his kingdom was [ag](BE)Babel and Erech and Accad and Calneh, in the land of (BF)Shinar. 11 From that land he went forth (BG)into Assyria, and built Nineveh and Rehoboth-Ir and Calah, 12 and Resen between Nineveh and Calah; that is the great city. 13 Mizraim [ah]became the father of (BH)Ludim and Anamim and Lehabim and Naphtuhim 14 and (BI)Pathrusim and Casluhim (from which came the Philistines) and Caphtorim.
15 Canaan [ai]became the father of (BJ)Sidon, his firstborn, and (BK)Heth 16 and (BL)the Jebusite and the Amorite and the Girgashite 17 and the Hivite and the Arkite and the Sinite 18 and the Arvadite and the Zemarite and the Hamathite; and afterward the families of the Canaanite were spread abroad. 19 (BM)The territory of the Canaanite [aj]extended from Sidon as you go toward Gerar, as far as Gaza; as you go toward (BN)Sodom and Gomorrah and Admah and Zeboiim, as far as Lasha. 20 These are the sons of Ham, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, by their nations.
21 Also to Shem, the father of all the children of Eber, and the [ak]older brother of Japheth, children were born. 22 (BO)The sons of Shem were (BP)Elam and Asshur and (BQ)Arpachshad and (BR)Lud and Aram. 23 The sons of Aram were (BS)Uz and Hul and Gether and Mash. 24 Arpachshad [al]became the father of (BT)Shelah; and Shelah [am]became the father of Eber. 25 (BU)Two sons were born to Eber; the name of the one was [an]Peleg, for in his days the earth was divided; and his brother’s name was Joktan. 26 Joktan [ao]became the father of Almodad and Sheleph and Hazarmaveth and Jerah 27 and Hadoram and Uzal and Diklah 28 and [ap]Obal and Abimael and Sheba 29 and Ophir and Havilah and Jobab; all these were the sons of Joktan. 30 Now their [aq]settlement [ar]extended from Mesha as you go toward Sephar, the hill country of the east. 31 These are the sons of Shem, according to their families, according to their languages, by their lands, according to their nations.
32 These are the families of the sons of Noah, according to their genealogies, by their nations; and (BV)out of these the nations were separated on the earth after the flood.
Jesus Begins His Ministry
12 Now when Jesus heard that (A)John had been taken into custody, (B)He withdrew into Galilee; 13 and leaving Nazareth, He came and (C)settled in Capernaum, which is by the sea, in the region of Zebulun and Naphtali. 14 This was to fulfill what was spoken through Isaiah the prophet:
15 “(D)The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
[a]By the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the [b]Gentiles—
16 “(E)The people who were sitting in darkness saw a great Light,
And those who were sitting in the land and shadow of death,
Upon them a Light dawned.”
17 (F)From that time Jesus began to [c]preach and say, “(G)Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”
The First Disciples
18 (H)Now as Jesus was walking by (I)the Sea of Galilee, He saw two brothers, (J)Simon who was called Peter, and Andrew his brother, casting a net into the sea; for they were fishermen. 19 And He *said to them, “[d]Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.” 20 Immediately they left their nets and followed Him. 21 Going on from there He saw two other brothers, [e](K)James the son of Zebedee, and [f]John his brother, in the boat with Zebedee their father, mending their nets; and He called them. 22 Immediately they left the boat and their father, and followed Him.
Ministry in Galilee
23 Jesus was going (L)throughout all Galilee, (M)teaching in their synagogues and (N)proclaiming the [g]gospel of the kingdom, and (O)healing every kind of disease and every kind of sickness among the people.
24 The news about Him spread (P)throughout all Syria; and they brought to Him all who were ill, those suffering with various diseases and pains, (Q)demoniacs, [h](R)epileptics, (S)paralytics; and He healed them. 25 Large crowds (T)followed Him from Galilee and (U)the Decapolis and Jerusalem and Judea and from (V)beyond the Jordan.
Evening Prayer of Trust in God.
[a]For the choir director; on stringed instruments. A Psalm of David.
4 (A)Answer me when (B)I call, O God [b]of my righteousness!
You have [c](C)relieved me in my distress;
Be (D)gracious to me and (E)hear my prayer.
2 O sons of men, how long will (F)my [d]honor become (G)a reproach?
How long will you love (H)what is worthless and aim at (I)deception? [e]Selah.
3 But know that the Lord has [f](J)set apart the (K)godly man for Himself;
The Lord (L)hears when I call to Him.
Wisdom Warns
20 (A)Wisdom shouts in the street,
She [a]lifts her voice in the square;
21 At the head of the noisy streets she cries out;
At the entrance of the gates in the city she utters her sayings:
22 “How long, O [b](B)naive ones, will you love [c]being simple-minded?
And (C)scoffers delight themselves in scoffing
And fools (D)hate knowledge?
23 “Turn to my reproof,
Behold, I will (E)pour out my spirit on you;
I will make my words known to you.
