Job 34-36

Elihu Answers That God Will Be Just

34 Then Elihu answered and said,

“Hear my speech, you wise men,
And give ear to me, you who know.
For (A)the ear tests words
As the palate tastes food.
Let us choose for ourselves what is just;
Let us know among ourselves what is good.
For Job has said, ‘(B)I am righteous,
But (C)God has removed my justice;
[a]Should I lie concerning my justice?
My [b](D)wound is incurable, though I am without transgression.’
What man is like Job,
Who (E)drinks up mocking like water,
But he travels (F)in company with the workers of iniquity,
And walks with wicked men?
For he has said, ‘(G)It is of no use to a man
When he [c]is pleased with God.’

10 “Therefore, listen to me, you men with a heart of wisdom.
Far be it from God to (H)do injustice,
And from the Almighty to do wrong.
11 For He pays a man according to (I)his work,
And makes [d]him find it according to his way.
12 Truly, (J)God will not act wickedly,
And the Almighty will not pervert justice.
13 Who (K)appointed Him with authority over the earth?
And who (L)has laid on Him the whole world?
14 If He should set His heart on it,
If He should (M)gather to Himself His spirit and His breath,
15 All (N)flesh would breathe its last together,
And man would (O)return to dust.

16 “But if you have understanding, hear this;
Give ear to the sound of my speech.
17 Shall (P)one who hates justice [e]rule?
And (Q)will you condemn the righteous mighty One,
18 Who says to a king, ‘Vile one,’
To nobles, ‘Wicked ones’;
19 Who shows no (R)partiality to princes
Nor recognizes the rich above the poor,
For they all are the (S)work of His hands?
20 In a moment they die, and (T)at midnight
People are shaken and pass away,
And (U)the mighty are taken away without a hand.

21 “For (V)His eyes are upon the ways of a man,
And He sees all his steps.
22 There is (W)no darkness or shadow of death
Where the workers of iniquity may hide themselves.
23 [f]For He does not (X)need to consider a man further,
That he should go before God in judgment.
24 He breaks in pieces (Y)mighty men without searching anything out,
And sets others in their place.
25 Therefore He (Z)recognizes their labors,
And (AA)He overthrows them in the night,
And they are crushed.
26 He (AB)strikes them like the wicked
[g]In a public place,
27 Because they (AC)turned aside from following Him,
And (AD)had no insight from any of His ways;
28 So that they caused (AE)the cry of the poor to come to Him,
And that He might (AF)hear the cry of the afflicted.
29 So if He keeps quiet, who then can condemn?
So if He hides His face, who then can perceive Him?
He is above both nation and man altogether,
30 So that (AG)godless men would not rule
Nor be snares of the people.

31 “For has anyone said to God,
‘I have borne chastisement;
I will not work destructively anymore;
32 Instruct me what I do not behold;
If I have (AH)done injustice,
I will not do it again’?
33 Shall He (AI)repay on your terms, because you have rejected it?
For you must choose, and not I;
Therefore say what you know.
34 Men with a heart of wisdom will say to me,
And a wise man who hears me,
35 ‘Job (AJ)speaks without knowledge,
And his words are without insight.
36 Job ought to be tested [h]to the limit
Because he answers (AK)like wicked men.
37 For he adds (AL)transgression to his sin;
He (AM)strikes his hands together among us,
And multiplies his words against God.’”

Elihu Answers Job

35 Then Elihu answered and said,

“Do you think this is according to (AN)justice?
Do you say, ‘My righteousness is more than God’s’?
For you say, ‘(AO)What use will it be to [i]You?
(AP)What profit will I have, more than if I had sinned?’
I will respond to you,
And your friends with you.
(AQ)Look at the heavens and see;
And perceive (AR)the clouds—they are higher than you.
If you have sinned, (AS)what do you accomplish against Him?
And if your transgressions are many, what do you do to Him?
If you are righteous, (AT)what do you give to Him,
Or what does He receive from your hand?
Your wickedness is for a man like yourself,
And your righteousness is for a son of man.

“Because of (AU)many oppressions they cry out;
They cry for help because of the arm (AV)of many oppressors.
10 But (AW)no one says, ‘Where is God my Maker,
Who (AX)gives songs of praise in the night,
11 Who (AY)teaches us more than the beasts of the earth
And makes us wiser than the birds of the heavens?’
12 There (AZ)they cry out, but He does not answer
Because of the pride of evil men.
13 Surely (BA)God will not listen to [j]an empty cry,
Nor will the Almighty perceive it.
14 How much less when (BB)you say you do not perceive Him,
The (BC)case is before Him, and you must wait for Him!
15 And now, because He has not visited in His anger,
Nor has He acknowledged [k]transgression well,
16 So Job opens his mouth vainly;
He multiplies words (BD)without knowledge.”

Elihu Says God Gives the Afflicted Justice

36 Then Elihu continued and said,

“Wait for me a little, and I will show you
That there [l]is yet more to be said in God’s behalf.
I will take up my knowledge from afar,
And I will ascribe (BE)righteousness to my Maker.
For truly (BF)my words are not a lie;
One who is [m](BG)perfect in knowledge is with you.
Behold, God is mighty but does not (BH)reject;
He is (BI)mighty in the power of His heart.
He does not (BJ)keep the wicked alive,
But gives justice to (BK)the afflicted.
He does not (BL)withdraw His eyes from the righteous;
But (BM)with kings on the throne
He has seated them forever, and they are exalted.
And if they are bound in fetters,
And are caught in the cords of (BN)affliction,
Then He declares to them their work
And their transgressions, that they have (BO)magnified themselves.
10 (BP)He opens their ear to discipline,
And (BQ)says that they return from wickedness.
11 If they hear and serve Him,
They will (BR)end their days in prosperity
And their years in (BS)pleasures.
12 But if they do not hear, they shall pass away (BT)by a weapon
And they will (BU)breathe their last without knowledge.
13 But the godless in heart lay up anger;
They do not cry for help when He binds them.
14 [n]They die in youth,
And their life perishes among the (BV)cult prostitutes.
15 He delivers the afflicted in [o]their (BW)affliction,
And (BX)opens their ear in [p]time of oppression.
16 Then indeed, He (BY)enticed you from the mouth of distress,
Instead of it, a broad place with no constraint;
And the comfort of your table full of [q]fatness.

17 “But you were full of (BZ)judgment on the wicked;
Judgment and justice take hold of you.
18 Beware lest (CA)wrath entice you to scoffing;
And do not let the greatness of the (CB)atonement turn you aside.
19 Will your [r]cries keep you from distress,
Or all the forces of your power?
20 Do not long for (CC)the night,
When people [s]vanish in their place.
21 Be careful, do (CD)not turn to wickedness,
For you have chosen this to (CE)affliction.
22 Behold, God is exalted in His power;
Who is a (CF)teacher like Him?
23 Who has appointed Him His way,
And who has said, ‘(CG)You have worked out [t]unrighteousness’?

24 “Remember that you should (CH)exalt His work,
Of which men have (CI)sung.
25 All men have beheld it;
Man looks from afar.
26 Behold, God is (CJ)exalted, and (CK)we do not know Him;
The (CL)number of His years is unsearchable.
27 For (CM)He draws up the drops of water,
They distill rain for His [u]stream,
28 Which the clouds pour down,
They drip upon man abundantly.
29 Can anyone discern the (CN)spreading of the clouds,
The (CO)thundering of His [v]pavilion?
30 Behold, He spreads His [w]lightning about Him,
And He covers the depths of the sea.
31 For by these He (CP)judges peoples;
He (CQ)gives food in abundance.
32 He covers His hands with the [x]lightning,
And (CR)commands it to strike the mark.
33 Its (CS)thundering declares about Him;
The cattle also, concerning what is coming up.

2 Corinthians 4:1-12

The Gospel of the Glory of Christ

Therefore, since we have this (A)ministry, as we (B)received mercy, we (C)do not lose heart, but we have renounced the (D)hidden things of shame, not walking in craftiness or (E)adulterating the word of God, but by the manifestation of truth (F)commending ourselves to every man’s conscience in the sight of God. And even if our (G)gospel is (H)veiled, it is veiled [a]to (I)those who are perishing, in whose case (J)the god of (K)this age has (L)blinded the minds of the unbelieving [b]so that they might not see the (M)light of the gospel of the (N)glory of Christ, who is the (O)image of God. For we (P)do not preach ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves as your slaves [c]for the sake of Jesus. For God, who said, “(Q)Light shall shine out of darkness,” is the One who has (R)shone in our hearts to give the (S)Light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Christ.

But we have this treasure in (T)earthen vessels, so that the surpassing greatness of (U)the power will be of God and not from ourselves; (V)in every way afflicted, but not (W)crushed; (X)perplexed, but not despairing; (Y)persecuted, but not (Z)forsaken; (AA)struck down, but not destroyed; 10 (AB)always carrying about in the body the dying of Jesus, so that (AC)the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our body. 11 For we who live are constantly being delivered over to death for Jesus’ sake, so that the life of Jesus also may be manifested in our mortal flesh. 12 So death works in us, but life in you.

Psalm 44:1-8

Rise Up, Be Our Help

For the choir director. Of the sons of Korah. A [a]Maskil.

44 O God, we have heard with our ears,
Our (A)fathers have recounted to us
The (B)work that You did in their days,
In the (C)days of old.
You with Your own hand (D)dispossessed the nations;
Then You (E)planted them;
You (F)afflicted the peoples,
Then You (G)cast them out.
For by their own sword they (H)did not possess the land,
And their own arm did not save them,
But Your right hand and Your (I)arm and the (J)light of Your presence,
For You (K)favored them.

You are (L)my King, O God;
(M)Command [b]salvation for Jacob.
Through You we will (N)push back our adversaries;
Through Your name we will (O)tread down those who rise up against us.
For I will (P)not trust in my bow,
And my sword will not save me.
But You (Q)have saved us from our adversaries,
And You have (R)put to shame those who hate us.
In God we have (S)boasted all day long,
And we will (T)give thanks to Your name forever. [c]Selah.

Proverbs 22:10-12

10 (A)Drive out the scoffer, and strife will go out,
Even contention and disgrace will cease.
11 He who loves (B)purity of heart
And (C)grace on his lips, the king is his friend.
12 The eyes of Yahweh guard knowledge,
But He subverts the words of the treacherous one.
