Elihu Speaks of God’s Voice
37 “At this also my heart trembles,
And leaps from its place.
2 [a]Listen closely to the (A)thunder of His voice,
And the rumbling that goes out from His mouth.
3 Under the whole heaven He lets it loose,
And His [b]lightning to the (B)ends of the earth.
4 After it, a voice roars;
He thunders with His majestic voice,
And He does not restrain [c]the lightnings when His voice is heard.
5 God (C)thunders with His voice marvelously,
Doing (D)great things which we do not know.
6 For to (E)the snow He says, ‘Fall on the earth,’
And to the (F)downpour of rain and the downpour of rains, ‘Be strong.’
7 He (G)seals the hand of every man,
That (H)all men may know His work.
8 Then the beast goes into its (I)lair
And dwells in its [d]den.
9 Out of the [e](J)south comes the storm,
And out of the [f]north the cold.
10 From the breath of God (K)ice is made,
And the expanse of the waters is frozen.
11 Also with moisture He (L)loads the thick cloud;
He (M)scatters (N)the cloud of His [g]lightning.
12 It changes direction, turning around by His guidance,
That [h]it may do whatever He (O)commands [i]it
On the (P)face of the inhabited earth.
13 Whether for [j](Q)correction, or for (R)His world,
Or for (S)lovingkindness, He causes it to [k]happen.
14 “Give ear to this, O Job,
Stand and carefully consider the wondrous deeds of God.
15 Do you know how God establishes them,
And makes the [l]lightning of His cloud to shine?
16 Do you know about the layers of the thick clouds,
The (T)wonders of one [m](U)perfect in knowledge,
17 You whose garments are hot,
When the land is quiet because of the south wind?
18 Can you, with Him, (V)spread out the skies,
Strong as a molten mirror?
19 Make us know what we shall say to Him;
We (W)cannot arrange our case because of darkness.
20 Shall it be recounted to Him that I would speak?
[n]If a man says a word, will He indeed be swallowed up?
21 “So now [o]men do not see the light which is bright in the skies;
But the wind has passed and cleared them.
22 Out of the north comes golden splendor;
Around God is fearsome majesty.
23 The Almighty—(X)we cannot find Him;
He is (Y)exalted in power
And (Z)He will not afflict (AA)justice and abundant righteousness.
24 Therefore men (AB)fear Him;
He does not (AC)regard any who are wise of heart.”
Yahweh Answers Job
38 Then Yahweh (AD)answered Job out of the [p]whirlwind and said,
2 “Who is this that (AE)darkens counsel
By words without knowledge?
3 Now (AF)gird up your loins like a man,
And (AG)I will ask you, and you make Me know!
4 Where were you (AH)when I laid the foundation of the earth?
Tell Me, if you know understanding,
5 Who set its (AI)measurements? Since you know.
Or who stretched the line on it?
6 On what (AJ)were its bases sunk?
Or who laid its cornerstone,
7 When the morning stars sang together
And all the (AK)sons of God shouted for joy?
8 “Or who (AL)enclosed the sea with doors
When, bursting forth, it went out from the womb,
9 When I made a cloud its garment
And dense gloom its swaddling band,
10 And I [q](AM)placed boundaries on it
And set a bolt and doors,
11 And I said, ‘Thus far you shall come, but no farther;
And here shall your proud waves stop’?
Yahweh Answers Job, “Have You?”
12 “Have you [r]ever in your life commanded the morning,
And caused the dawn to know its place,
13 That it might seize (AN)the ends of the earth,
And (AO)the wicked be shaken out of it?
14 It is changed like clay under the seal;
And they stand forth like clothing.
15 (AP)From the wicked their light is withheld,
And the arm (AQ)raised high is broken.
16 “Have you entered into (AR)the springs of the sea
Or walked [s]in the recesses of the deep?
17 Have the gates of death been revealed to you,
Or have you seen the gates of the (AS)shadow of death?
18 Have you carefully considered the [t]expanse of (AT)the earth?
Tell Me, if you know all this.
19 “Where is the way to where the light dwells?
And darkness, where is its place,
20 That you may take it to (AU)its territory
And that you may discern the paths to its [u]home?
21 You know, for (AV)you were born then,
And the number of your days is great!
22 Have you entered the storehouses (AW)of the snow,
Or have you seen the storehouses of the (AX)hail,
23 Which I have reserved for the time of distress,
For the day of war and battle?
24 Where is the way that (AY)the light is divided,
Or the east wind scattered on the earth?
25 “Who has cleft a conduit for the flood,
Or a way for the thunderbolt,
26 To bring (AZ)rain on a land without [v]people,
On a desert without a man in it,
27 To (BA)satisfy the waste and desolate land
And to make the growth of grass to sprout?
28 Has (BB)the rain a father?
Or who has begotten the drops of dew?
29 From whose womb has come the (BC)ice?
And the frost of heaven, who has given it birth?
30 Water [w]becomes hard like stone,
And the surface of the deep [x]is interlocked.
31 “Can you bind the chains of the (BD)Pleiades,
Or loose the cords of Orion?
32 Can you lead forth a [y]constellation in its season,
And guide the Bear with her [z]satellites?
33 Do you know the (BE)statutes of the heavens,
Or fix their rule over the earth?
34 “Can you raise your voice up to the clouds,
So that an (BF)abundance of water will cover you?
35 Can you (BG)send forth lightnings that they may go
And say to you, ‘Here we are’?
36 Who has (BH)given wisdom in the [aa]innermost being
Or given (BI)understanding to the [ab]mind?
37 Who can count the clouds by wisdom,
Or (BJ)tip the water jars of the heavens,
38 When the dust hardens into a mass
And the clods stick together?
Yahweh Answers Job, “Where Were You?”
39 “Can you hunt the (BK)prey for the lion,
Or fulfill the appetite of the young lions,
40 When they (BL)crouch in their dens
And lie in wait in their lair?
41 Who prepares for (BM)the raven its provision
When its young cry for help to God
And wander about without food?
39 “Do you know the time the [ac](BN)mountain goats give birth?
Do you keep watch over the calving of the (BO)deer?
2 Can you count the months they fulfill,
Or do you know the time they give birth?
3 They kneel down; they bring forth their young;
They send out their labor pains.
4 Their children become strong; they grow up in the open field;
They leave and do not return to them.
5 “Who sent out the (BP)wild donkey free?
And who loosed the bonds of the swift donkey,
6 For whom I have set (BQ)the desert plain as a home
And the salt land as his dwelling place?
7 He laughs at the tumult of the city;
The shoutings of the driver he does not hear.
8 He explores the mountains for his pasture
And searches after every green thing.
9 Will the (BR)wild ox consent to serve you,
Or will he spend the night at your manger?
10 Can you bind the wild ox in a furrow with [ad]ropes,
Or will he harrow the valleys after you?
11 Will you trust him because his power is great
And leave your labor to him?
12 Will you believe him that he will return your seed of grain
And gather it from your threshing floor?
13 “The ostriches’ wings flap joyously
But are they the pinion and plumage of a [ae]stork?
14 For she leaves her eggs to the earth
And warms them in the dust,
15 And she forgets that a foot may crush [af]them,
Or that a beast of the field may trample [ag]them.
16 She treats her children (BS)cruelly, as if they were not hers;
Though her labor be empty, she is without dread,
17 Because God has made her forget wisdom,
And has not given her a share of understanding.
18 When she raises herself up high,
She laughs at the horse and his rider.
19 “Do you give the horse his might?
Do you clothe his neck with a mane?
20 Do you make him (BT)leap like the locust?
His splendid (BU)snorting is terrible.
21 [ah]He paws in the valley and rejoices in his power;
He (BV)goes out to meet the weapons.
22 He laughs at dread and is not dismayed;
And he does not turn back from the sword.
23 The quiver rattles against him,
The flashing spear and javelin.
24 With shaking and rage he [ai]races over the ground,
And he does not [aj]stand still at the sound of the trumpet.
25 As often as the trumpet sounds he says, ‘Aha!’
And he scents the battle from afar,
And the thunder of the commanders and the shout of war.
26 “Is it by your understanding that the hawk soars,
Stretching his wings toward the south?
27 Is it at your [ak]command that the eagle goes on high
And raises (BW)his nest high?
28 On the cliff he dwells and lodges,
Upon the rocky crag, a fortress.
29 From there he [al](BX)spies out food;
His eyes see it from afar.
30 His young ones also suck up blood;
And (BY)where the slain are, there is he.”
13 But having the same (A)spirit of faith, according to what is written, “(B)I believed, therefore I spoke,” we also believe, therefore we also speak, 14 knowing that He who (C)raised the Lord Jesus (D)will raise us also with Jesus and will (E)present us with you. 15 For all things are (F)for your sakes, so that the grace which is [a](G)spreading to more and more people may cause the giving of thanks to abound to the glory of God.
16 Therefore we (H)do not lose heart, but though our outer man is decaying, yet our (I)inner man is (J)being renewed day by day. 17 For our momentary, (K)light affliction is working out for us an eternal weight of glory far beyond all comparison, 18 while we (L)look not at the things which are seen, but at the things which are not seen; for the things which are seen are temporal, but the things which are not seen are eternal.
The Temporal and Eternal
5 For we know that if [b]the (M)earthly (N)tent which is our house is torn down, we have a building from God, a house (O)not made with hands, eternal in the heavens. 2 For indeed in this we (P)groan, longing to be (Q)clothed with our dwelling from heaven, 3 inasmuch as we, having put it on, will not be found naked. 4 For indeed while we are in this tent, we (R)groan, being burdened, because we do not want to be unclothed but to be (S)clothed, so that what is (T)mortal will be swallowed up by life. 5 Now He who prepared us for this very purpose is God, who (U)gave to us the Spirit as a [c]pledge.
6 Therefore, being always of good courage, and knowing that (V)while we are at home in the body we are absent from the Lord— 7 for (W)we walk by faith, not by [d]sight— 8 we are of good courage and (X)prefer rather to be absent from the body and (Y)to be at home with the Lord. 9 Therefore we also have as our ambition, whether at home or absent, to be (Z)pleasing to Him. 10 For we must all appear before (AA)the judgment seat of Christ, so that each one may be recompensed for [e]his deeds in the body, according to what he has done, whether good or bad.
9 Yet You (A)have rejected us and brought us to (B)dishonor,
And (C)do not go out with our armies.
10 You cause us to (D)turn back from the adversary;
And those who hate us (E)have plundered us for themselves.
11 You give us as (F)sheep [a]to be eaten
And have (G)scattered us among the nations.
12 You (H)sell Your people [b]for no amount,
And You have not [c]profited from their price.
13 You make us a (I)reproach to our neighbors,
A mockery and a (J)derision to those around us.
14 You make us (K)a byword among the nations,
A [d](L)laughingstock among the peoples.
15 All day long my dishonor is before me
And [e]the (M)shame of my face has covered me,
16 Because of the voice of him who (N)reproaches and reviles,
Because of the presence of the (O)enemy and the avenger.
17 All this has come upon us, but we have (P)not forgotten You,
And we have not (Q)dealt falsely with Your covenant.
18 Our heart has not (R)turned back,
Nor have our steps (S)deviated from Your path,
19 Yet You have (T)crushed us in a place of (U)jackals
And covered us with (V)the shadow of death.
20 If we had (W)forgotten the name of our God
Or spread our [f]hands to (X)a strange god,
21 Would not God (Y)find this out?
For He knows the secrets of the heart.
22 But (Z)for Your sake we are killed all day long;
We are counted as (AA)sheep for the slaughter.
23 (AB)Arouse Yourself, why (AC)do You sleep, O Lord?
Awake, (AD)do not reject us forever.
24 Why do You (AE)hide Your face
And (AF)forget our affliction and our oppression?
25 For our (AG)soul has sunk down into the dust;
Our [g]body cleaves to the earth.
26 (AH)Rise up, be our help,
And (AI)redeem us for the sake of Your lovingkindness.
13 The (A)sluggard says, “There is a lion outside;
I will be killed in the streets!”
