12 Therefore thus says the Holy One of Israel,
“(A)Since you have rejected this word
And have put your trust in (B)oppression and guile, and have relied on them,
13 Therefore this (C)iniquity will be to you
Like a (D)breach about to fall,
A bulge in a high wall,
Whose collapse comes (E)suddenly in an instant,
14 Whose collapse is like the smashing of a (F)potter’s jar,
[a]So ruthlessly shattered
That a sherd will not be found among its pieces
To [b]take fire from a hearth
Or to scoop water from a cistern.”
15 For thus the Lord [c]God, the Holy One of Israel, has said,
“In [d]repentance and (G)rest you will be saved,
In (H)quietness and trust is your strength.”
But you were not willing,
16 And you said, “No, for we will flee on (I)horses,”
Therefore you shall flee!
“And we will ride on swift horses,”
Therefore those who pursue you shall be swift.
17 (J)One thousand will flee at the threat of one man;
You will flee at the threat of five,
Until you are left as a [e]flag on a mountain top
And as a signal on a hill.
God Is Gracious and Just
18 Therefore the Lord [f](K)longs to be gracious to you,
And therefore He [g]waits on (L)high to have compassion on you.
For the Lord is a (M)God of justice;
How blessed are all those who [h](N)long for Him.
19 [i]O people in Zion, (O)inhabitant in Jerusalem, you will (P)weep no longer. He will surely be gracious to you at the sound of your cry; when He hears it, He will (Q)answer you. 20 Although the Lord has given you (R)bread of privation and water of oppression, He, your Teacher will no longer (S)hide Himself, but your eyes will behold your Teacher. 21 Your ears will hear a word behind you, “[j]This is the (T)way, walk in it,” whenever you (U)turn to the right or to the left. 22 And you will defile your graven (V)images overlaid with silver, and your molten (W)images plated with gold. You will scatter them as an impure thing, and say to [k]them, “(X)Be gone!”
23 Then He will (Y)give you rain for [l]the seed which you will sow in the ground, and bread from the yield of the ground, and it will be [m]rich and [n]plenteous; on that day (Z)your livestock will graze in a roomy pasture. 24 Also the oxen and the donkeys which work the ground will eat salted fodder, which [o]has been (AA)winnowed with shovel and fork. 25 On every lofty mountain and on (AB)every high hill there will be [p]streams running with water on the day of the great (AC)slaughter, when the towers fall. 26 (AD)The light of the moon will be as the light of the sun, and the light of the sun will be seven times brighter, like the light of seven days, on the day (AE)the Lord binds up the (AF)fracture of His people and (AG)heals the bruise [q]He has inflicted.
27 Behold, (AH)the name of the Lord comes from a [r]remote place;
(AI)Burning is His anger and [s]dense is His [t]smoke;
His lips are filled with (AJ)indignation
And His tongue is like a (AK)consuming fire;
28 His (AL)breath is like an overflowing torrent,
Which (AM)reaches to the neck,
To (AN)shake the nations back and forth in a [u]sieve,
And to put in the jaws of the peoples (AO)the bridle which [v]leads to ruin.
29 You will have [w]songs as in the night when you keep the festival,
And gladness of heart as when one marches to the sound of the flute,
To go to the mountain of the Lord, to the Rock of Israel.
30 And the Lord will cause [x]His voice of authority to be heard,
And the [y]descending of His arm to be seen in fierce anger,
And in the flame of a consuming fire
In cloudburst, downpour and hailstones.
31 For (AP)at the voice of the Lord (AQ)Assyria will be terrified,
When He strikes with the (AR)rod.
32 And every [z]blow of the [aa](AS)rod of punishment,
Which the Lord will lay on him,
Will be with the music of (AT)tambourines and lyres;
And in battles, (AU)brandishing weapons, He will fight them.
33 For [ab](AV)Topheth has long been ready,
Indeed, it has been prepared for the king.
He has made it deep and large,
[ac]A pyre of fire with plenty of wood;
The (AW)breath of the Lord, like a torrent of (AX)brimstone, sets it afire.
Help Not in Egypt but in God
31 Woe to those who go down to (AY)Egypt for help
And (AZ)rely on horses,
And trust in chariots because they are many
And in horsemen because they are very strong,
But they do not (BA)look to the (BB)Holy One of Israel, nor seek the Lord!
2 Yet He also is (BC)wise and will (BD)bring disaster
And does (BE)not retract His words,
But will arise against the house of (BF)evildoers
And against the help of the (BG)workers of iniquity.
3 Now the Egyptians are (BH)men and not God,
And their (BI)horses are flesh and not spirit;
So the Lord will (BJ)stretch out His hand,
And (BK)he who helps will stumble
And he who is helped will fall,
And all of them will come to an end together.
4 For thus says the Lord to me,
“As the (BL)lion or the young lion growls over his prey,
Against which a band of shepherds is called out,
And he will not be terrified at their voice nor disturbed at their noise,
So will the Lord of hosts come down to wage (BM)war on Mount Zion and on its hill.”
5 Like [ad]flying (BN)birds so the Lord of hosts will protect Jerusalem.
He will (BO)protect and deliver it;
He will pass over and rescue it.
6 (BP)Return to Him from whom [ae]you have (BQ)deeply defected, O sons of Israel. 7 For in that day every man will (BR)cast away his silver idols and his gold idols, which your (BS)sinful hands have made for you as (BT)a sin.
8 And the (BU)Assyrian will fall by a sword not of man,
And a (BV)sword not of man will devour him.
So he will [af](BW)not escape the sword,
And his young men will become (BX)forced laborers.
9 “His (BY)rock will pass away because of panic,
And his princes will be terrified at the (BZ)standard,”
Declares the Lord, whose (CA)fire is in Zion and whose furnace is in Jerusalem.
The Glorious Future
32 Behold, a (CB)king will reign righteously
And princes will rule justly.
2 Each will be like a (CC)refuge from the wind
And a shelter from the storm,
Like [ag](CD)streams of water in a dry country,
Like the (CE)shade of a [ah]huge rock in [ai]a parched land.
3 Then (CF)the eyes of those who see will not be [aj]blinded,
And the ears of those who hear will listen.
4 The [ak]mind of the (CG)hasty will discern the [al]truth,
And the tongue of the stammerers will hasten to speak clearly.
5 No longer will the (CH)fool be called noble,
Or the rogue be spoken of as generous.
6 For a fool speaks nonsense,
And his heart [am](CI)inclines toward wickedness:
To practice (CJ)ungodliness and to speak error against the Lord,
To [an](CK)keep the hungry person unsatisfied
And [ao]to withhold drink from the thirsty.
7 As for a rogue, his weapons are evil;
He (CL)devises wicked schemes
To (CM)destroy the afflicted with [ap]slander,
(CN)Even though the needy one speaks [aq]what is right.
8 But (CO)the noble man devises noble plans;
And by noble plans he stands.
9 Rise up, you (CP)women who are at ease,
And hear my voice;
(CQ)Give ear to my word,
You complacent daughters.
10 Within a year and a few days
You will be troubled, O complacent daughters;
(CR)For the vintage is ended,
And the fruit gathering will not come.
11 Tremble, you women who are at ease;
(CS)Be troubled, you complacent daughters;
(CT)Strip, undress and put sackcloth on your waist,
12 (CU)Beat your breasts for the pleasant fields, for the fruitful vine,
13 (CV)For the land of my people in which thorns and briars shall come up;
Yea, for all the joyful houses and for the (CW)jubilant city.
14 Because (CX)the palace has been abandoned, the [ar]populated (CY)city forsaken.
[as]Hill and watch-tower have become (CZ)caves forever,
A delight for (DA)wild donkeys, a pasture for flocks;
15 Until the (DB)Spirit is poured out upon us from on high,
And the wilderness becomes a (DC)fertile field,
And the fertile field is considered as a forest.
16 Then (DD)justice will dwell in the wilderness
And righteousness will abide in the fertile field.
17 And the (DE)work of righteousness will be peace,
And the service of righteousness, (DF)quietness and [at]confidence forever.
18 Then my people will live in a (DG)peaceful habitation,
And in secure dwellings and in undisturbed (DH)resting places;
19 And it will (DI)hail when the (DJ)forest comes down,
And (DK)the city will be utterly laid low.
20 How (DL)blessed will you be, you who sow beside all waters,
Who [au]let out freely the ox and the donkey.
The Judgment of God
33 Woe (DM)to you, O destroyer,
While you were not destroyed;
And he (DN)who is treacherous, while others did not deal treacherously with him.
As soon as you finish destroying, (DO)you will be destroyed;
As soon as you cease to deal treacherously, others will (DP)deal treacherously with you.
2 O Lord, (DQ)be gracious to us; we have (DR)waited for You.
Be [av]their [aw](DS)strength every morning,
Our salvation also in the (DT)time of distress.
3 At the sound of the tumult (DU)peoples flee;
At the (DV)lifting up of Yourself nations disperse.
4 Your spoil is gathered as the caterpillar gathers;
As locusts rushing about men rush about on it.
5 The Lord is (DW)exalted, for He dwells on high;
He has (DX)filled Zion with justice and righteousness.
6 And He will be the [ax](DY)stability of your times,
A (DZ)wealth of salvation, wisdom and (EA)knowledge;
The (EB)fear of the Lord is his treasure.
7 Behold, their brave men cry in [ay]the streets,
The [az](EC)ambassadors of peace weep bitterly.
8 The highways are desolate, [ba]the (ED)traveler has ceased,
He has (EE)broken the covenant, he has despised the cities,
He has no regard for man.
9 (EF)The land mourns and pines away,
(EG)Lebanon is shamed and withers;
(EH)Sharon is like a desert plain,
And Bashan and Carmel [bb]lose their foliage.
Walk by the Spirit
5 [a](A)It was for freedom that Christ set us free; therefore (B)keep standing firm and do not be subject again to a (C)yoke of slavery.
2 Behold I, (D)Paul, say to you that if you receive (E)circumcision, Christ will be of no benefit to you. 3 And I (F)testify again to every man who receives (G)circumcision, that he is under obligation to (H)keep the whole Law. 4 You have been severed from Christ, you who [b]are seeking to be justified by law; you have (I)fallen from grace. 5 For we [c]through the Spirit, [d]by faith, are (J)waiting for the hope of righteousness. 6 For in (K)Christ Jesus (L)neither circumcision nor uncircumcision means anything, but (M)faith working through love.
7 You were (N)running well; who hindered you from obeying the truth? 8 This persuasion did not come from (O)Him who calls you. 9 (P)A little leaven leavens the whole lump of dough. 10 (Q)I have confidence [e]in you in the Lord that you (R)will adopt no other view; but the one who is (S)disturbing you will bear his judgment, whoever he is. 11 But I, brethren, if I still preach circumcision, why am I still (T)persecuted? Then (U)the stumbling block of the cross has been abolished. 12 I wish that (V)those who are troubling you would even [f](W)mutilate themselves.
The Thirsting Soul Satisfied in God.
A Psalm of David, [a]when he was in the wilderness of Judah.
63 O God, (A)You are my God; I shall seek You [b]earnestly;
My soul (B)thirsts for You, my flesh [c]yearns for You,
In a (C)dry and weary land where there is no water.
2 Thus I have (D)seen You in the sanctuary,
To see Your power and Your glory.
3 Because Your (E)lovingkindness is better than life,
My lips will praise You.
4 So I will bless You (F)as long as I live;
I will (G)lift up my hands in Your name.
5 My soul is (H)satisfied as with [d]marrow and fatness,
And my mouth offers (I)praises with joyful lips.
6 When I remember You (J)on my bed,
I meditate on You in the (K)night watches,
7 For (L)You have been my help,
And in the (M)shadow of Your wings I sing for joy.
8 My soul (N)clings [e]to You;
Your (O)right hand upholds me.
9 But those who (P)seek my [f]life to destroy it,
Will go into the [g](Q)depths of the earth.
10 [h]They will be [i](R)delivered over to the power of the sword;
They will be a [j](S)prey for foxes.
11 But the (T)king will rejoice in God;
Everyone who (U)swears by Him will glory,
For the (V)mouths of those who speak lies will be stopped.
