Calamitous Judgments of Jerusalem

12 Then the word of Yahweh came to me saying, 13 “Son of man, if a country sins against Me by (A)committing unfaithfulness, and I stretch out My hand against it, break its (B)staff of bread, send famine against it, and cut off from it both man and beast, 14 even (C)though these three men, (D)Noah, (E)Daniel, and (F)Job were in its midst, by their own righteousness they could only deliver (G)themselves,” declares Lord Yahweh. 15 “If I were to cause (H)wild beasts to pass through the land and they bereaved it of children and it became desolate so that no one would pass through it because of the beasts, 16 though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “they could not deliver either their sons or their daughters. (I)They alone would be delivered, but the country would become desolate. 17 Or if I should (J)bring a sword on that country and say, ‘Let the sword pass through the country and (K)cut off man and beast from it,’ 18 even though these three men were in its midst, as I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “they could not deliver either their sons or their daughters, but they alone would be delivered. 19 Or if I should send a (L)plague against that country and pour out My wrath in blood on it to cut off man and beast from it, 20 even though Noah, Daniel, and Job were in its midst, as I live,” declares Lord Yahweh, “they could not deliver either their son or their daughter. They would deliver only themselves by their righteousness.”

21 For thus says Lord Yahweh, “How much more when (M)I send My four calamitous judgments against Jerusalem: sword, famine, wild beasts, and plague to cut off man and beast from it! 22 Yet, behold, [a]survivors will be left in it who will be brought out, both sons and daughters. Behold, they are going to come forth to you, and you will (N)see their way and actions; then you will be (O)comforted for the calamity which I have brought against Jerusalem for everything which I have brought upon it. 23 Then they will comfort you when you see their way and actions, so you will know that I have not done (P)in vain all that I did [b]to it,” declares Lord Yahweh.

Is Jerusalem Useful for Anything?

15 Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, “Son of man, how is the wood of the (Q)vine better than any wood of a branch which is among the trees of the forest? Can wood be taken from it to make [c]anything, or can men take a peg from it on which to hang any vessel? [d]If it has been put into the (R)fire for fuel, and the fire has consumed both of its ends, and its middle part has been charred, is it then useful for [e]anything? Behold, while it is intact, it is not made into [f]anything. How much less, when the fire has consumed it and it is charred, can it still be made into [g]anything! Therefore, thus says Lord Yahweh, ‘As the wood of the vine among the trees of the forest, which I have given to the fire for fuel, so have I given up the inhabitants of Jerusalem; and I will (S)give My face to be against them. Though they have (T)come out of the fire, yet the fire will consume them. Then you will know that I am Yahweh, when I set My face against them. Thus I will give over the land to desolation because they have (U)acted unfaithfully,’” declares Lord Yahweh.

Jerusalem Plays the Harlot

16 Then the word of Yahweh came to me, saying, “Son of man, (V)make known to Jerusalem her abominations and say, ‘Thus says Lord Yahweh to Jerusalem, “Your origin and your birth are from the land of the Canaanite; your father was an Amorite and your mother a Hittite. As for your birth, (W)on the day you were born your navel cord was not cut, nor were you washed with water for cleansing; you were not rubbed with salt or even wrapped in cloths. No eye had pity on you to do any of these things for you, to have compassion on you. Rather you were thrown out into the [h](X)open field, for your soul was abhorred on the day you were born.

“Then I passed by you and saw you squirming in your blood. So I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’ Indeed I said to you while you were in your blood, ‘Live!’ I (Y)made you [i]numerous like plants of the field. Then you grew up, became tall, and came into the age for fine ornaments; your breasts were formed, and your hair had grown. Yet you were naked and bare.

“Then I passed by you and saw you, and behold, [j]you were at the time for love; so I (Z)spread My skirt over you and covered your nakedness. I also (AA)swore to you and (AB)entered into a covenant with you so that you (AC)became Mine,” declares Lord Yahweh. “Then I washed you with water, rinsed your blood off from you, and (AD)anointed you with oil. 10 I also clothed you with (AE)embroidered cloth and put sandals of porpoise skin on your feet; and I wrapped you with fine linen and covered you with silk. 11 I also adorned you with ornaments and put (AF)bracelets on your hands and a (AG)necklace around your neck. 12 I also put a (AH)ring in your nose, earrings in your ears, and a (AI)splendid crown on your head. 13 Thus you were adorned with (AJ)gold and silver, and your clothing was of fine linen, silk, and embroidered cloth. You ate fine flour, honey, and oil; so you were exceedingly beautiful and advanced to (AK)royalty. 14 Then your (AL)name went forth among the nations on account of your beauty, for it was (AM)perfect because of My majesty which I set on you,” declares Lord Yahweh.

15 “But you (AN)trusted in your beauty and (AO)played the harlot because of your name, and you poured out your harlotries on every passer-by [k]who might be willing. 16 You took some of your clothes, made for yourself high places of various colors, and played the harlot on them, [l]which should never come about nor happen. 17 You also took your splendid [m](AP)jewelry made of My gold and of My silver, which I had given you, and made for yourself male images that you might play the harlot with them. 18 Then you took your embroidered cloth and covered them and gave My oil and My incense before them. 19 Also (AQ)My bread which I gave you, fine flour, oil, and honey with which I had you eat, you gave before them for a soothing aroma; so it happened,” declares Lord Yahweh. 20 “Moreover, you took your sons and daughters, whom you had borne to (AR)Me, and (AS)sacrificed them to [n]idols to be devoured. Were your harlotries so small a matter? 21 You slaughtered (AT)My children and gave them up to [o]idols by (AU)causing them to pass through the fire. 22 Besides all your abominations and harlotries you did not remember the days of (AV)your youth, when you were naked and bare—you were squirming in your blood!

23 “Now it happened after all your evil—‘Woe, woe to you!’ declares Lord Yahweh— 24 that you built yourself a (AW)shrine and made yourself a (AX)high place in every square. 25 You built yourself a high place at the head of (AY)every street and made your beauty abominable, and you spread your legs to every passer-by to multiply your harlotry. 26 You also played the harlot with the Egyptians, your [p]lustful neighbors, and you multiplied your harlotry to (AZ)provoke Me to anger. 27 Behold now, I have stretched out My hand against you and cut off your rations. And I gave you up to the desire of those who hate you, the (BA)daughters of the Philistines, who are ashamed of your lewd way. 28 Moreover, you played the harlot with the (BB)Assyrians because you were not satisfied; you played the harlot with them and still were not satisfied. 29 You also multiplied your harlotry with the land of merchants, Chaldea, yet even with this you were not satisfied.”’”

30 “How (BC)languishing is your heart,” declares Lord Yahweh, “while you do all these things, the actions of a [q](BD)bold-faced harlot. 31 When you built your shrine at the head of every way and made your high place in every square, in (BE)disdaining your earnings, you were not like a harlot. 32 You adulteress wife, who takes strangers instead of her husband! 33 [r]Men give gifts to all harlots, but you (BF)give your gifts to all your lovers to bribe them to come to you from all around for your harlotries. 34 Thus you are the opposite of those women in your harlotries, in that no one plays the harlot [s]as you do, because you give away your earnings and no earnings are given to you; thus you are the opposite.”

35 Therefore, O harlot, hear the word of Yahweh. 36 Thus says Lord Yahweh, “Because your lewdness was poured out and your nakedness uncovered through your harlotries with your lovers and with all your abominable (BG)idols, and because of the blood of your sons which you gave to [t]idols, 37 therefore, behold, I will (BH)gather all your lovers with whom you took pleasure, even all those whom you loved and all those whom you (BI)hated. So I will gather them against you from all around and (BJ)uncover your nakedness to them that they may see all your nakedness. 38 Thus I will (BK)judge you like women who commit adultery or shed blood are judged; and I will bring on you the blood of (BL)wrath and jealousy. 39 I will also give you into [u]the hands of your lovers, and they will pull down your shrines, tear down your high places, (BM)strip you of your clothing, take away your [v]splendid jewelry, and will leave you naked and bare. 40 They will bring up an (BN)assembly against you, and they will stone you and cut you to pieces with their swords. 41 They will (BO)burn your houses with fire and execute judgments on you in the sight of many women. Then I will (BP)make you cease from playing the harlot, and you will also no longer give [w]your earnings to your lovers.

Hebrews 7:18-28

18 For, on the one hand, there is a setting aside of a former commandment (A)because of its weakness and uselessness 19 (for (B)the Law made nothing perfect), and on the other hand there is a bringing in of a better (C)hope, through which we (D)draw near to God. 20 And inasmuch as it was not without an oath 21 (for they indeed became priests without an oath, but He with an oath through the One who said to Him,

(E)The [a]Lord has sworn
And (F)will not change His mind,
You are a priest (G)forever’”);

22 so much more Jesus also has become the (H)guarantee of (I)a better covenant.

23 And [b]the former priests, on the one hand, existed in greater numbers because they were prevented by death from continuing, 24 but Jesus, on the other hand, because He continues (J)forever, holds His priesthood permanently. 25 Therefore He is able also to (K)save [c]forever those who (L)draw near to God through Him, since He always lives to (M)make intercession for them.

26 For it was fitting for us to have such a (N)high priest, (O)holy, (P)innocent, undefiled, separated from sinners and (Q)exalted above the heavens; 27 who does not need daily, like those high priests, to (R)offer up sacrifices, (S)first for His own sins and then for the sins of the people, because this He did (T)once for all when He (U)offered up Himself. 28 For the Law appoints men as high priests (V)who are weak, but the word of the oath, which came after the Law, appoints (W)a Son, who has been (X)made perfect forever.

Psalm 106:1-12

Remember Me, O Yahweh

106 [a]Praise Yah!
Oh (A)give thanks to Yahweh, for He (B)is good;
For (C)His lovingkindness endures forever.
Who can speak of the (D)mighty deeds of Yahweh,
Or can make all His praise to be heard?
How blessed are those who keep [b]justice,
[c]And he who (E)does righteousness at all times!

Remember me, O Yahweh, in Your (F)favor [d]toward Your people;
Visit me with Your salvation,
That I may see the (G)goodness of Your chosen ones,
That I may (H)rejoice in the gladness of Your nation,
That I may (I)boast with Your [e]inheritance.

(J)We have sinned (K)with our fathers,
We have committed iniquity, we have acted wickedly.
Our fathers in Egypt did not consider Your wondrous deeds;
They (L)did not remember Your abundant lovingkindnesses,
But they (M)rebelled by the sea, at the [f]Red Sea.
Yet He saved them (N)for the sake of His name,
That He might (O)make His might known.
Thus He (P)rebuked the [g]Red Sea and it (Q)dried up,
And He (R)led them through the deeps, as through the wilderness.
10 So He (S)saved them from the [h]hand of the one who hated them,
And (T)redeemed them from the [i]hand of the enemy.
11 (U)The waters covered their adversaries;
Not one of them was left.
12 Then they (V)believed His words;
They (W)sang His praise.

Proverbs 27:4-6

Wrath is cruelty and anger is a flood,
But (A)who can stand before jealousy?
Better is reproof that is (B)revealed
Than love that is hidden.
Faithful are the (C)wounds of a friend,
But [a]deceitful are the (D)kisses of an enemy.
