Hananiah’s False Prophecy
28 Now in the same year, (A)in the beginning of the reign of (B)Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, (C)Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet, who was from (D)Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of the Lord in the presence of the priests and all the people, saying, 2 “(E)Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. 3 Within two years I am going to bring back to this place (F)all the vessels of the Lord’s house, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. 4 I am (G)also going to bring back to this place (H)Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the (I)exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares the Lord, ‘for I will break the (J)yoke of the king of Babylon.’”
5 Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the presence of the priests and in the presence of all the people who were standing in the (K)house of the Lord, 6 and the prophet Jeremiah said, “(L)Amen! May the Lord do so; may the Lord [a]confirm your words which you have prophesied to bring back the vessels of the Lord’s house and all the exiles, from Babylon to this place. 7 Yet (M)hear now this word which I am about to speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people! 8 The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times (N)prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms, of war and of calamity and of pestilence. 9 The prophet who prophesies of peace, (O)when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then that prophet will be known as one whom the Lord has truly sent.”
10 Then Hananiah the prophet took the (P)yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11 Hananiah spoke in the presence of all the people, saying, “(Q)Thus says the Lord, ‘Even so will I break within two full years the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way.
12 The (R)word of the Lord came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 13 “Go and speak to Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord, “You have broken the yokes of wood, but you have made instead of them (S)yokes of iron.” 14 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, “I have put a (T)yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon; and they will (U)serve him. And (V)I have also given him the beasts of the field.”’” 15 Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen now, Hananiah, the Lord has not sent you, and (W)you have made this people trust in a lie. 16 Therefore thus says the Lord, ‘(X)Behold, I am about to [b]remove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to (Y)die, because you have [c](Z)counseled rebellion against the Lord.’”
17 So Hananiah the prophet died in the same year in the seventh month.
Message to the Exiles
29 Now these are the words of the (AA)letter which Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the rest of the elders of the exile, the priests, the prophets and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. 2 (This was after King (AB)Jeconiah and the (AC)queen mother, the court officials, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen and the smiths had departed from Jerusalem.) 3 The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan, and Gemariah the son of (AD)Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, saying, 4 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have (AE)sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, 5 ‘(AF)Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their [d]produce. 6 Take (AG)wives and [e]become the fathers of sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there and do not decrease. 7 (AH)Seek the [f]welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and (AI)pray to the Lord on its behalf; for in its [g]welfare you will have [h]welfare.’ 8 For thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Do not let your (AJ)prophets who are in your midst and your diviners (AK)deceive you, and do not listen to [i](AL)the dreams which [j]they dream. 9 For they (AM)prophesy falsely to you in My name; (AN)I have not sent them,’ declares the Lord.
10 “For thus says the Lord, ‘When (AO)seventy years have been completed for Babylon, I will visit you and fulfill My (AP)good word to you, to bring you back to this place. 11 For I know the (AQ)plans that I [k]have for you,’ declares the Lord, ‘plans for (AR)welfare and not for calamity to give you a future and a (AS)hope. 12 Then you will (AT)call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will (AU)listen to you. 13 You will (AV)seek Me and find Me when you (AW)search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will be (AX)found by you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will (AY)restore your [l]fortunes and will (AZ)gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have driven you,’ declares the Lord, ‘and I will (BA)bring you back to the place from where I sent you into exile.’
15 “Because you have said, ‘The Lord has raised up (BB)prophets for us in Babylon’— 16 for thus says the Lord concerning the king who sits on the throne of David, and concerning all the people who dwell in this city, your brothers who did (BC)not go with you into exile— 17 thus says the Lord of hosts, ‘Behold, I am sending upon them the (BD)sword, famine and pestilence, and I will make them like (BE)split-open figs that cannot be eaten due to rottenness. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, with famine and with pestilence; and I will (BF)make them a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a (BG)curse and a horror and a (BH)hissing, and a reproach among all the nations where I have driven them, 19 because they have (BI)not listened to My words,’ declares the Lord, ‘which I sent to them again and again by (BJ)My servants the prophets; but you did not listen,’ declares the Lord. 20 You, therefore, hear the word of the Lord, all you exiles, whom I have (BK)sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.
21 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who are (BL)prophesying to you falsely in My name, ‘Behold, I will deliver them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will slay them before your eyes. 22 Because of them a (BM)curse will be [m]used by all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon, saying, “May the Lord make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon (BN)roasted in the fire, 23 because they have (BO)acted foolishly in Israel, and (BP)have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have (BQ)spoken words in My name falsely, which I did not command them; and I am He who (BR)knows and am a witness,” declares the Lord.’”
24 To (BS)Shemaiah the Nehelamite you shall speak, saying, 25 “Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have sent (BT)letters in your own name to all the people who are in Jerusalem, and to (BU)Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying, 26 “The Lord has made you priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to be the [n](BV)overseer in the house of the Lord over every (BW)madman who (BX)prophesies, to (BY)put him in the stocks and in the iron collar, 27 now then, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of (BZ)Anathoth who prophesies to you? 28 For he has (CA)sent to us in Babylon, saying, ‘The exile will be (CB)long; (CC)build houses and live in them and plant gardens and eat their [o]produce.’”’”
29 (CD)Zephaniah the priest read this letter [p]to Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then came the word of the Lord to Jeremiah, saying, 31 “Send to (CE)all the exiles, saying, ‘Thus says the Lord concerning (CF)Shemaiah the Nehelamite, “Because Shemaiah has (CG)prophesied to you, although I did not send him, and he has (CH)made you trust in a lie,” 32 therefore thus says the Lord, “Behold, I am about to (CI)punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his [q]descendants; he will (CJ)not have anyone living among this people, (CK)and he will not see the good that I am about to do to My people,” declares the Lord, “because he has [r](CL)preached rebellion against the Lord.”’”
Misleadings in Doctrine and Living
1 Paul, (A)an apostle of (B)Christ Jesus (C)according to the commandment of (D)God our Savior, and of (E)Christ Jesus, who is our (F)hope,
2 To (G)Timothy, (H)my true child in the faith: (I)Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and (J)Christ Jesus our Lord.
3 As I urged you [a]upon my departure for (K)Macedonia, [b]remain on at (L)Ephesus so that you may instruct certain men not to (M)teach strange doctrines, 4 nor to [c]pay attention to (N)myths and endless (O)genealogies, which give rise to mere (P)speculation rather than (Q)furthering [d]the administration of God which is by faith. 5 But the goal of our [e](R)instruction is love (S)from a pure heart and a (T)good conscience and a sincere (U)faith. 6 For some men, straying from these things, have turned aside to (V)fruitless discussion, 7 (W)wanting to be (X)teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.
8 But we know that (Y)the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, 9 realizing the fact that (Z)law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and (AA)rebellious, for the (AB)ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and (AC)profane, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers 10 [f]and [g](AD)immoral men [h]and (AE)homosexuals [i]and (AF)kidnappers [j]and (AG)liars [k]and (AH)perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to (AI)sound teaching, 11 according to (AJ)the glorious gospel of (AK)the blessed God, with which I have been (AL)entrusted.
12 I thank (AM)Christ Jesus our Lord, who has (AN)strengthened me, because He considered me faithful, (AO)putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a (AP)persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was (AQ)shown mercy because (AR)I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the (AS)grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the (AT)faith and love which are found in Christ Jesus. 15 (AU)It is a trustworthy statement, deserving full acceptance, that (AV)Christ Jesus came into the world to (AW)save sinners, among whom (AX)I am foremost of all. 16 Yet for this reason I (AY)found mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Jesus Christ might (AZ)demonstrate His perfect patience as an example for those [l]who would believe in Him for eternal life. 17 Now to the (BA)King [m]eternal, (BB)immortal, (BC)invisible, the (BD)only God, (BE)be honor and glory [n]forever and ever. Amen.
18 This (BF)command I entrust to you, Timothy, (BG)my [o]son, in accordance with the (BH)prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you (BI)fight the good fight, 19 keeping (BJ)faith and a good conscience, which some have rejected and suffered shipwreck in regard to [p](BK)their faith. 20 [q]Among these are (BL)Hymenaeus and (BM)Alexander, whom I have (BN)handed over to Satan, so that they will be (BO)taught not to blaspheme.
A Psalm of Supplication and Trust.
A Prayer of David.
86 (A)Incline Your ear, O Lord, and answer me;
For I am (B)afflicted and needy.
2 (C)Preserve my [a]soul, for I am a (D)godly man;
O You my God, save Your servant who (E)trusts in You.
3 Be (F)gracious to me, O Lord,
For (G)to You I cry all day long.
4 Make glad the soul of Your servant,
For to You, O Lord, (H)I lift up my soul.
5 For You, Lord, are (I)good, and (J)ready to forgive,
And (K)abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You.
6 (L)Give ear, O Lord, to my prayer;
And give heed to the voice of my supplications!
7 In (M)the day of my trouble I shall call upon You,
For (N)You will answer me.
8 There is (O)no one like You among the gods, O Lord,
Nor are there any works (P)like Yours.
9 (Q)All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And they shall glorify Your name.
10 For You are (R)great and (S)do [b]wondrous deeds;
You alone (T)are God.
11 (U)Teach me Your way, O Lord;
I will walk in Your truth;
(V)Unite my heart to fear Your name.
12 I will (W)give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And will glorify Your name forever.
13 For Your lovingkindness toward me is great,
And You have (X)delivered my soul from the [c]depths of [d]Sheol.
14 O God, arrogant men have (Y)risen up against me,
And [e]a band of violent men have sought my [f]life,
And they have not set You before them.
15 But You, O Lord, are a God (Z)merciful and gracious,
Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and [g]truth.
16 (AA)Turn to me, and be gracious to me;
Oh (AB)grant Your strength to Your servant,
And save the (AC)son of Your handmaid.
17 (AD)Show me a sign for good,
That those who hate me may (AE)see it and be ashamed,
Because You, O Lord, (AF)have helped me and comforted me.
17 Let your foot rarely be in your neighbor’s house,
Or he will become [a]weary of you and hate you.
