Prophecy against Moab
48 Concerning (A)Moab. Thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel,
“Woe to (B)Nebo, for it has been destroyed;
(C)Kiriathaim has been put to shame, it has been captured;
The lofty stronghold has been put to shame and [a]shattered.
2 “There is praise for Moab no longer;
In (D)Heshbon they have devised calamity against her:
‘Come and let us cut her off from being a nation!’
You too, [b]Madmen, will be silenced;
The sword will follow after you.
3 “The sound of an outcry from (E)Horonaim,
‘Devastation and great destruction!’
4 “Moab is broken,
Her little ones have sounded out a cry of distress.
5 “For by the ascent of (F)Luhith
They will ascend with continual weeping;
For at the descent of Horonaim
They have heard the [c]anguished cry of destruction.
6 “(G)Flee, save your lives,
That you may be like a juniper in the wilderness.
7 “For because of your (H)trust in your own achievements and treasures,
Even you yourself will be captured;
And (I)Chemosh will go off into exile
Together with his priests and his princes.
8 “A destroyer will come to every city,
So that no city will escape;
The valley also will be ruined
And the (J)plateau will be destroyed,
As the Lord has said.
9 “Give [d](K)wings to Moab,
For she will [e]flee away;
And her cities will become a (L)desolation,
Without inhabitants in them.
10 “(M)Cursed be the one who does the Lord’s work (N)negligently,
And cursed be the one who restrains his (O)sword from blood.
11 “Moab has been (P)at ease since his youth;
He has also been (Q)undisturbed, like wine on [f]its dregs,
And he has not been (R)emptied from vessel to vessel,
Nor has he gone into exile.
Therefore [g]he retains his flavor,
And his aroma has not changed.
12 Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when I will send to him those who tip vessels, and they will tip him over, and they will empty his vessels and shatter [h]his jars. 13 And Moab will be (S)ashamed of (T)Chemosh, as the house of Israel was ashamed of (U)Bethel, their confidence.
14 “How can you say, ‘We are (V)mighty warriors,
And men valiant for battle’?
15 “Moab has been destroyed and [i]men have gone up to [j]his cities;
His choicest [k](W)young men have also gone down to the slaughter,”
Declares the (X)King, whose name is the Lord of hosts.
16 “The disaster of Moab will (Y)soon come,
And his calamity has swiftly hastened.
17 “Mourn for him, all you who live around him,
Even all of you who know his name;
Say, ‘How has the mighty [l](Z)scepter been broken,
A staff of splendor!’
18 “(AA)Come down from your glory
And sit [m]on the parched ground,
O (AB)daughter dwelling in (AC)Dibon,
For the destroyer of Moab has come up against you,
He has ruined your strongholds.
19 “Stand by the road and keep watch,
O inhabitant of (AD)Aroer;
(AE)Ask him who flees and her who escapes
And say, ‘What has happened?’
20 “Moab has been put to shame, for it has been [n]shattered.
Wail and cry out;
Declare by the (AF)Arnon
That Moab has been destroyed.
21 “Judgment has also come upon the plain, upon Holon, (AG)Jahzah and against (AH)Mephaath, 22 against Dibon, Nebo and Beth-diblathaim, 23 against Kiriathaim, Beth-gamul and (AI)Beth-meon, 24 against (AJ)Kerioth, Bozrah and all the cities of the land of Moab, far and near. 25 The (AK)horn of Moab has been cut off and his (AL)arm broken,” declares the Lord. 26 “(AM)Make him drunk, for he has [o]become (AN)arrogant toward the Lord; so Moab will [p]wallow in his vomit, and he also will become a laughingstock. 27 Now was not Israel a (AO)laughingstock to you? Or was he [q](AP)caught among thieves? For each time you speak about him you (AQ)shake your head in scorn.
28 “Leave the cities and dwell among the (AR)crags,
O inhabitants of Moab,
And be like a (AS)dove that nests
Beyond the mouth of the chasm.
29 “(AT)We have heard of the pride of Moab—he is very proud—
Of his haughtiness, his (AU)pride, his arrogance and [r]his self-exaltation.
30 “I know his (AV)fury,” declares the Lord,
“But it is futile;
His idle boasts have accomplished nothing.
31 “Therefore I will (AW)wail for Moab,
Even for all Moab will I cry out;
[s]I will moan for the men of (AX)Kir-heres.
32 “More than the (AY)weeping for (AZ)Jazer
I will weep for you, O vine of Sibmah!
Your tendrils stretched across the sea,
They reached to the sea of Jazer;
Upon your summer fruits and your grape harvest
The destroyer has fallen.
33 “So (BA)gladness and joy are taken away
From the fruitful field, even from the land of Moab.
And I have made the wine to (BB)cease from the wine presses;
No one will tread them with shouting,
The shouting will not be shouts of joy.
34 (BC)From the outcry at Heshbon even to (BD)Elealeh, even to Jahaz they have [t]raised their voice, from (BE)Zoar even to Horonaim and to Eglath-shelishiyah; for even the waters of Nimrim will become desolate. 35 I will make an end of Moab,” declares the Lord, “the one who offers sacrifice on the (BF)high place and the one who [u](BG)burns incense to his gods.
36 “Therefore My (BH)heart [v]wails for Moab like flutes; My heart also [w]wails like flutes for the men of Kir-heres. Therefore they have (BI)lost the abundance it produced. 37 For (BJ)every head is bald and every beard cut short; there are gashes on all the hands and (BK)sackcloth on the loins. 38 On all the (BL)housetops of Moab and in its streets [x]there is lamentation everywhere; for I have broken Moab like an undesirable (BM)vessel,” declares the Lord. 39 “How [y]shattered it is! How they have wailed! How Moab has turned his back—he is ashamed! So Moab will become a laughingstock and an (BN)object of terror to all around him.”
40 For thus says the Lord:
“Behold, one will (BO)fly swiftly like an eagle
And (BP)spread out his wings against Moab.
41 “Kerioth has been captured
And the strongholds have been seized,
So the (BQ)hearts of the mighty men of Moab in that day
Will be like the heart of a (BR)woman in labor.
42 “Moab will be (BS)destroyed from being a people
Because he has [z]become (BT)arrogant toward the Lord.
43 “(BU)Terror, pit and snare are coming upon you,
O inhabitant of Moab,” declares the Lord.
44 “The one who (BV)flees from the terror
Will fall into the pit,
And the one who climbs up out of the pit
Will be caught in the snare;
For I shall bring upon her, even upon Moab,
The year of their (BW)punishment,” declares the Lord.
45 “In the shadow of Heshbon
The fugitives stand without strength;
For a fire has gone forth from Heshbon
And a (BX)flame from the midst of (BY)Sihon,
And it has devoured the (BZ)forehead of Moab
And the scalps of the [aa]riotous revelers.
46 “(CA)Woe to you, Moab!
The people of (CB)Chemosh have perished;
For your sons have been taken away captive
And your daughters into captivity.
47 “Yet I will (CC)restore the [ab]fortunes of Moab
In the [ac]latter days,” declares the Lord.
Thus far the judgment on Moab.
Prophecy against Ammon
49 Concerning the sons of (CD)Ammon. Thus says the Lord:
“Does Israel have no sons?
Or has he no heirs?
Why then has [ad]Malcam taken possession of Gad
And his people settled in its cities?
2 “Therefore behold, the days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“That I will cause a [ae](CE)trumpet blast of war to be heard
Against (CF)Rabbah of the sons of Ammon;
And it will become a desolate heap,
And her (CG)towns will be set on fire.
Then Israel will take (CH)possession of his possessors,”
Says the Lord.
3 “Wail, O (CI)Heshbon, for (CJ)Ai has been destroyed!
Cry out, O daughters of Rabbah,
(CK)Gird yourselves with sackcloth and lament,
And rush back and forth inside the walls;
For [af]Malcam will (CL)go into exile
Together with his priests and his princes.
4 “How (CM)boastful you are about the valleys!
Your valley is flowing away,
O (CN)backsliding daughter
Who trusts in her (CO)treasures, saying,
‘(CP)Who will come against me?’
5 “Behold, I am going to bring (CQ)terror upon you,”
Declares the Lord [ag]God of hosts,
“From all directions around you;
And each of you will be (CR)driven out [ah]headlong,
With no one to gather the (CS)fugitives together.
6 “But afterward I will (CT)restore
The [ai]fortunes of the sons of Ammon,”
Declares the Lord.
Prophecy against Edom
7 Concerning (CU)Edom.
Thus says the Lord of hosts,
“Is there no longer any (CV)wisdom in (CW)Teman?
Has good counsel been lost to the prudent?
Has their wisdom decayed?
8 “Flee away, turn back, dwell in the depths,
O inhabitants of (CX)Dedan,
For I [aj]will bring the (CY)disaster of Esau upon him
At the time I [ak]punish him.
9 “(CZ)If grape gatherers came to you,
Would they not leave gleanings?
If thieves came by night,
They would destroy only [al]until they had enough.
10 “But I have (DA)stripped Esau bare,
I have uncovered his hiding places
So that he will not be able to conceal himself;
His [am]offspring has been destroyed along with his [an]relatives
And his neighbors, and (DB)he is no more.
11 “Leave your [ao](DC)orphans behind, I will keep them alive;
And let your (DD)widows trust in Me.”
12 For thus says the Lord, “Behold, those [ap]who were not sentenced to drink the (DE)cup will certainly drink it, and are you the one who will be (DF)completely acquitted? You will not be acquitted, but you will certainly drink it. 13 For I have (DG)sworn by Myself,” declares the Lord, “that (DH)Bozrah will become an (DI)object of horror, a reproach, a ruin and a curse; and all its cities will become perpetual ruins.”
14 I have (DJ)heard a message from the Lord,
And an (DK)envoy is sent among the nations, saying,
“(DL)Gather yourselves together and come against her,
And rise up for battle!”
15 “For behold, I have made you small among the nations,
Despised among men.
16 “As for the terror of you,
The arrogance of your heart has deceived you,
O you who live in the clefts of [aq]the (DM)rock,
Who occupy the height of the hill.
Though you make your nest as (DN)high as an eagle’s,
I will (DO)bring you down from there,” declares the Lord.
17 “Edom will become an (DP)object of horror; everyone who passes by it will be horrified and will (DQ)hiss at all its wounds. 18 Like the (DR)overthrow of Sodom and Gomorrah with its neighbors,” says the Lord, “(DS)no one will live there, nor will a son of man reside in it. 19 (DT)Behold, one will come up like a lion from the [ar](DU)thickets of the Jordan against [as]a perennially watered pasture; for in an instant I will make him run away from it, and whoever is (DV)chosen I shall appoint over it. For who is (DW)like Me, and who will summon Me into court? And who then is the shepherd (DX)who can stand against Me?”
20 Therefore hear the (DY)plan of the Lord which He has planned against Edom, and His purposes which He has purposed against the inhabitants of Teman: surely they will drag them off, even the little ones of the flock; surely He will make their [at]pasture (DZ)desolate because of them. 21 The (EA)earth has quaked at the noise of their downfall. There is an outcry! The noise of it has been heard at the [au]Red Sea. 22 Behold, [av]He will mount up and (EB)swoop like an eagle and spread out His wings [aw]against Bozrah; and the (EC)hearts of the mighty men of Edom in that day will be like the heart of a woman in labor.
“Preach the Word”
4 (A)I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to (B)judge the living and the dead, and by His (C)appearing and His kingdom: 2 preach (D)the word; be ready in season and out of season; (E)reprove, rebuke, exhort, with [a]great (F)patience and instruction. 3 For (G)the time will come when they will not endure (H)sound doctrine; but wanting to have their ears tickled, they will accumulate for themselves teachers in accordance to their own desires, 4 and (I)will turn away their ears from the truth and (J)will turn aside to myths. 5 But you, (K)be sober in all things, (L)endure hardship, do the work of an (M)evangelist, fulfill your (N)ministry.
6 For I am already being (O)poured out as a drink offering, and the time of (P)my departure has come. 7 (Q)I have fought the good fight, I have finished (R)the course, I have kept (S)the faith; 8 in the future there (T)is laid up for me (U)the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous Judge, will award to me on (V)that day; and not only to me, but also to (W)all who have loved His (X)appearing.
Personal Concerns
9 (Y)Make every effort to come to me soon; 10 for (Z)Demas, having loved (AA)this present [b]world, has deserted me and gone to (AB)Thessalonica; Crescens has gone to [c](AC)Galatia, (AD)Titus to Dalmatia. 11 (AE)Only (AF)Luke is with me. Pick up (AG)Mark and bring him with you, (AH)for he is useful to me for service. 12 But (AI)Tychicus I have sent to (AJ)Ephesus. 13 When you come bring the cloak which I left at (AK)Troas with Carpus, and the books, especially the parchments. 14 (AL)Alexander the coppersmith did me much harm; (AM)the Lord will repay him according to his deeds. 15 Be on guard against him yourself, for he vigorously opposed our [d]teaching.
16 At my first defense no one supported me, but all deserted me; (AN)may it not be counted against them. 17 But the Lord stood with me and (AO)strengthened me, so that through me (AP)the proclamation might [e]be (AQ)fully accomplished, and that all (AR)the Gentiles might hear; and I was (AS)rescued out of (AT)the lion’s mouth. 18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed, and will [f](AU)bring me safely to His (AV)heavenly kingdom; (AW)to [g]Him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.
19 Greet Prisca and (AX)Aquila, and (AY)the household of Onesiphorus. 20 (AZ)Erastus remained at (BA)Corinth, but (BB)Trophimus I left sick at (BC)Miletus. 21 (BD)Make every effort to come before (BE)winter. Eubulus greets you, also Pudens and Linus and Claudia and all the brethren.
Praise to the Lord, and Warning against Unbelief.
95 O come, let us (A)sing for joy to the Lord,
Let us shout joyfully to (B)the rock of our salvation.
2 Let us (C)come before His presence (D)with [a]thanksgiving,
Let us shout joyfully to Him (E)with [b]psalms.
3 For the Lord is a (F)great God
And a great King (G)above all gods,
4 In whose hand are the (H)depths of the earth,
The peaks of the mountains are His also.
5 [c]The sea is His, for it was He (I)who made it,
And His hands formed the dry land.
6 Come, let us (J)worship and bow down,
Let us (K)kneel before the Lord our (L)Maker.
7 For He is our God,
And (M)we are the people of His [d](N)pasture and the sheep of His hand.
(O)Today, [e]if you would hear His voice,
8 Do not harden your hearts, as at [f](P)Meribah,
As in the day of [g](Q)Massah in the wilderness,
9 “When your fathers (R)tested Me,
They tried Me, though they had seen My work.
10 “For (S)forty years I loathed that generation,
And said they are a people who err in their heart,
And they do not know My ways.
11 “Therefore I (T)swore in My anger,
Truly they shall not enter into My (U)rest.”
A Call to Worship the Lord the Righteous Judge.
96 (V)Sing to the Lord a (W)new song;
Sing to the Lord, all the earth.
2 Sing to the Lord, bless His name;
(X)Proclaim good tidings of His salvation from day to day.
3 Tell of (Y)His glory among the nations,
His wonderful deeds among all the peoples.
4 For (Z)great is the Lord and (AA)greatly to be praised;
He is to be (AB)feared (AC)above all gods.
5 For (AD)all the gods of the peoples are [h]idols,
But (AE)the Lord made the heavens.
6 (AF)Splendor and majesty are before Him,
Strength and beauty are in His sanctuary.
7 [i]Ascribe to the Lord, O (AG)families of the peoples,
[j](AH)Ascribe to the Lord glory and strength.
8 [k]Ascribe to the Lord the (AI)glory of His name;
Bring an [l](AJ)offering and come into His courts.
9 (AK)Worship the Lord in [m]holy attire;
(AL)Tremble before Him, all the earth.
10 Say among the nations, “(AM)The Lord reigns;
Indeed, the (AN)world is firmly established, it will not be moved;
He will (AO)judge the peoples with [n]equity.”
11 Let the (AP)heavens be glad, and let the (AQ)earth rejoice;
Let (AR)the sea [o]roar, and [p]all it contains;
12 Let the (AS)field exult, and all that is in it.
Then all the (AT)trees of the forest will sing for joy
13 Before the Lord, (AU)for He is coming,
For He is coming to judge the earth.
(AV)He will judge the world in righteousness
And the peoples in His faithfulness.
9 Like a thorn which [a]falls into the hand of a drunkard,
So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
10 [b]Like an archer who wounds everyone,
So is he who hires a fool or who hires those who pass by.
11 Like (A)a dog that returns to its vomit
Is a fool who (B)repeats [c]his folly.
12 Do you see a man (C)wise in his own eyes?
(D)There is more hope for a fool than for him.
