Jeremiah 44:24-47:7

24 Then Jeremiah said to all the people, including all the women, “(A)Hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are (B)in the land of Egypt, 25 thus says the Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, as follows: ‘As for you and your wives, you have spoken with your mouths and fulfilled it with your hands, saying, “We will (C)certainly perform our vows that we have vowed, to burn [a]sacrifices to the queen of heaven and pour out drink offerings to her.” [b](D)Go ahead and confirm your vows, and certainly perform your vows!’ 26 [c]Nevertheless hear the word of the Lord, all Judah who are living in the land of Egypt, ‘Behold, I have (E)sworn by My great name,’ says the Lord, ‘(F)never shall My name be invoked again by the mouth of any man of Judah in all the land of Egypt, saying, “(G)As the Lord [d]God lives.” 27 Behold, I am watching over them (H)for harm and not for good, and (I)all the men of Judah who are in the land of Egypt will [e]meet their end by the sword and by famine until they [f]are completely gone. 28 (J)Those who escape the sword will return out of the land of Egypt to the land of Judah [g](K)few in number. Then all the remnant of Judah who have gone to the land of Egypt to reside there will know (L)whose word will stand, Mine or theirs. 29 This will be the (M)sign to you,’ declares the Lord, ‘that I am going to punish you in this place, so that you may know that (N)My words will surely stand against you for harm.’ 30 Thus says the Lord, ‘Behold, I am going to give over (O)Pharaoh Hophra king of Egypt to the hand of his enemies, to the hand of those who seek his life, just as I gave over (P)Zedekiah king of Judah to the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, who was his enemy and was seeking his life.’”

Message to Baruch

45 This is the message which Jeremiah the prophet spoke to (Q)Baruch the son of Neriah, when he had (R)written down these words in a book [h]at Jeremiah’s dictation, in the (S)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying: “Thus says the Lord the God of Israel to you, O Baruch: ‘You said, “Ah, woe is me! For the Lord has added sorrow to my pain; I am (T)weary with my groaning and have found no rest.”’ Thus you are to say to him, ‘Thus says the Lord, “Behold, (U)what I have built I am about to tear down, and what I have planted I am about to uproot, that is, the whole land.” But you, are you (V)seeking great things for yourself? Do not seek them; for behold, I am going to (W)bring disaster on all flesh,’ declares the Lord, ‘but I will (X)give your life to you as booty in all the places where you may go.’”

Defeat of Pharaoh Foretold

46 That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet (Y)concerning the nations.

To (Z)Egypt, concerning the army of (AA)Pharaoh Neco king of Egypt, which was by the Euphrates River at (AB)Carchemish, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon defeated in the (AC)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah:

(AD)Line up the shield and [i]buckler,
And draw near for the battle!
“Harness the horses,
And [j]mount the steeds,
And take your stand with helmets on!
(AE)Polish the spears,
Put on the (AF)scale-armor!
“Why have I seen it?
They are terrified,
They are (AG)drawing back,
And their (AH)mighty men are defeated
And have taken refuge in flight,
Without facing back;
[k](AI)Terror is on every side!”
Declares the Lord.
Let not the (AJ)swift man flee,
Nor the mighty man escape;
In the north beside the river Euphrates
They have (AK)stumbled and fallen.
Who is this that (AL)rises like the Nile,
Like the rivers whose waters surge about?
Egypt rises like the Nile,
Even like the rivers whose waters surge about;
And He has said, “I will (AM)rise and cover that land;
I will surely (AN)destroy the city and its inhabitants.”
Go up, you horses, and [l](AO)drive madly, you chariots,
That the mighty men may [m]march forward:
Ethiopia and [n](AP)Put, that handle the shield,
And the [o](AQ)Lydians, that handle and bend the bow.
10 For (AR)that day belongs to the Lord [p]God of hosts,
A day of (AS)vengeance, so as to avenge Himself on His foes;
And the (AT)sword will devour and be satiated
And [q]drink its fill of their blood;
For there will be a (AU)slaughter for the Lord [r]God of hosts,
In the land of the north by the river Euphrates.
11 Go (AV)up to Gilead and obtain balm,
(AW)O virgin daughter of Egypt!
In vain have you multiplied [s]remedies;
There is (AX)no healing for you.
12 The nations have heard of your (AY)shame,
And the earth is full of your (AZ)cry of distress;
For one (BA)warrior has stumbled over [t]another,
And both of them have fallen down together.

13 This is the [u]message which the Lord spoke to Jeremiah the prophet about the (BB)coming of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon to (BC)smite the land of Egypt:

14 “Declare in Egypt and proclaim in (BD)Migdol,
Proclaim also in Memphis and (BE)Tahpanhes;
Say, ‘Take your stand and get yourself ready,
For the (BF)sword has devoured those around you.’
15 “Why have your (BG)mighty ones become prostrate?
They do not stand because the Lord has (BH)thrust them down.
16 “They have repeatedly (BI)stumbled;
Indeed, they have fallen one against another.
Then they said, ‘Get up! And (BJ)let us go back
To our own people and our native land
Away from the [v](BK)sword of the oppressor.’
17 [w]They cried there, ‘Pharaoh king of Egypt is but (BL)a big noise;
He has let the appointed time pass by!’
18 “As I live,” declares the (BM)King
Whose name is the Lord of hosts,
“Surely one shall come who looms up like (BN)Tabor among the mountains,
Or like (BO)Carmel by the sea.
19 “Make your baggage ready for (BP)exile,
O (BQ)daughter dwelling in Egypt,
For (BR)Memphis will become a desolation;
It will even be burned down and [x]bereft of inhabitants.
20 “Egypt is a pretty (BS)heifer,
But a [y]horsefly is coming (BT)from the north—it is coming!
21 “Also her (BU)mercenaries in her midst
Are like [z]fattened (BV)calves,
For even they too have turned back and have fled away together;
They did not stand their ground.
For the day of their calamity has come upon them,
The time of their (BW)punishment.
22 “Its sound moves along like a serpent;
For they move on [aa]like an army
And come to her as woodcutters with axes.
23 “They have cut down her (BX)forest,” declares the Lord;
“Surely it will no more be found,
Even though [ab]they are now more numerous than (BY)locusts
And are without number.
24 “The daughter of Egypt has been put to shame,
Given over to the [ac]power of the (BZ)people of the north.”

25 The Lord of hosts, the God of Israel, says, “Behold, I am going to punish Amon of (CA)Thebes, and (CB)Pharaoh, and Egypt along with her (CC)gods and her kings, even Pharaoh and those who (CD)trust in him. 26 I shall give them over to the [ad]power of those who are (CE)seeking their lives, even into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of his [ae]officers. (CF)Afterwards, however, it will be inhabited as in the days of old,” declares the Lord.

27 “But as for you, O Jacob My servant, (CG)do not fear,
Nor be dismayed, O Israel!
For, see, I am going to (CH)save you from afar,
And your descendants from the land of their captivity;
And Jacob will return and be (CI)undisturbed
And secure, with no one making him tremble.
28 “O Jacob My servant, do not fear,” declares the Lord,
“For (CJ)I am with you.
For I will make a full end of all the nations
Where I have driven you,
Yet I will (CK)not make a full end of you;
But I will (CL)correct you properly
And by no means leave you unpunished.”

Prophecy against Philistia

47 That which came as the word of the Lord to Jeremiah the prophet concerning the (CM)Philistines, before Pharaoh [af]conquered (CN)Gaza. Thus says the Lord:

“Behold, waters are going to rise from (CO)the north
And become an overflowing torrent,
And (CP)overflow the land and all its fullness,
The city and those who live in it;
And the men will (CQ)cry out,
And every inhabitant of the land will wail.
“Because of the noise of the [ag](CR)galloping hoofs of his [ah]stallions,
The tumult of his chariots, and the rumbling of his wheels,
The fathers have not turned back for their children,
Because of the limpness of their hands,
On account of the day that is coming
To (CS)destroy all the Philistines,
To cut off from (CT)Tyre and Sidon
Every ally that is left;
For the Lord is going to destroy the Philistines,
The remnant of the coastland of (CU)Caphtor.
(CV)Baldness has come upon Gaza;
(CW)Ashkelon has been ruined.
O remnant of their valley,
How long will you (CX)gash yourself?
“Ah, (CY)sword of the Lord,
How long will you not be quiet?
Withdraw into your sheath;
Be at rest and stay still.
“How can [ai]it be quiet,
When the Lord has (CZ)given it an order?
Against Ashkelon and against the seacoast—
There He has (DA)assigned it.”

2 Timothy 2:22-3:17

22 Now (A)flee from youthful lusts and pursue righteousness, (B)faith, love and peace, with those who (C)call on the Lord (D)from a pure heart. 23 But refuse foolish and ignorant (E)speculations, knowing that they (F)produce [a]quarrels. 24 (G)The Lord’s bond-servant must not be quarrelsome, but be kind to all, (H)able to teach, patient when wronged, 25 (I)with gentleness correcting those who are in opposition, (J)if perhaps God may grant them repentance leading to (K)the knowledge of the truth, 26 and they may come to their senses and escape from (L)the snare of the devil, having been (M)held captive [b]by him to do his will.

“Difficult Times Will Come”

But realize this, that (N)in the last days difficult times will come. For men will be (O)lovers of self, (P)lovers of money, (Q)boastful, (R)arrogant, (S)revilers, (T)disobedient to parents, (U)ungrateful, (V)unholy, (W)unloving, irreconcilable, (X)malicious gossips, without self-control, brutal, [c](Y)haters of good, (Z)treacherous, (AA)reckless, (AB)conceited, (AC)lovers of pleasure rather than lovers of God, holding to a form of [d](AD)godliness, although they have (AE)denied its power; (AF)Avoid such men as these. For among them are those who [e](AG)enter into households and captivate [f](AH)weak women weighed down with sins, led on by (AI)various impulses, always learning and never able to (AJ)come to the [g]knowledge of the truth. Just as (AK)Jannes and Jambres (AL)opposed Moses, so these men also oppose the truth, (AM)men of depraved mind, rejected in regard to the faith. But they will not make further progress; for their (AN)folly will be obvious to all, just (AO)as [h]Jannes’s and Jambres’s folly was also.

10 Now you (AP)followed my teaching, conduct, purpose, faith, patience, (AQ)love, [i]perseverance, 11 (AR)persecutions, and (AS)sufferings, such as happened to me at (AT)Antioch, at (AU)Iconium and at (AV)Lystra; what (AW)persecutions I endured, and out of them all (AX)the Lord rescued me! 12 Indeed, all who desire to live godly in Christ Jesus (AY)will be persecuted. 13 But evil men and impostors (AZ)will proceed from bad to worse, (BA)deceiving and being deceived. 14 You, however, (BB)continue in the things you have learned and become convinced of, knowing from whom you have learned them, 15 and that (BC)from childhood you have known (BD)the sacred writings which are able to (BE)give you the wisdom that leads to (BF)salvation through faith which is in (BG)Christ Jesus. 16 (BH)All Scripture is [j]inspired by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, for [k]training in righteousness; 17 so that (BI)the man of God may be adequate, (BJ)equipped for every good work.

Psalm 94

The Lord Implored to Avenge His People.

94 O Lord, God of [a](A)vengeance,
God of [b]vengeance, [c](B)shine forth!
(C)Rise up, O (D)Judge of the earth,
Render recompense (E)to the proud.
How long shall the wicked, O Lord,
How long shall the (F)wicked exult?
They pour forth words, they (G)speak arrogantly;
All who do wickedness (H)vaunt themselves.
They (I)crush Your people, O Lord,
And (J)afflict Your heritage.
They (K)slay the widow and the [d]stranger
And murder the orphans.
(L)They have said, “[e]The Lord does not see,
Nor does the God of Jacob pay heed.”

Pay heed, you (M)senseless among the people;
And when will you understand, (N)stupid ones?
He who (O)planted the ear, [f]does He not hear?
He who formed the eye, [g]does He not see?
10 He who [h](P)chastens the nations, will He not rebuke,
Even He who (Q)teaches man knowledge?
11 The Lord (R)knows the thoughts of man,
[i]That they are a mere breath.

12 Blessed is the man whom (S)You chasten, O [j]Lord,
And (T)whom You teach out of Your law;
13 That You may grant him (U)relief from the (V)days of adversity,
Until (W)a pit is dug for the wicked.
14 For (X)the Lord will not abandon His people,
Nor will He (Y)forsake His inheritance.
15 For [k](Z)judgment [l]will again be righteous,
And all the upright in heart [m]will follow it.
16 Who will (AA)stand up for me against evildoers?
Who will take his stand for me (AB)against those who do wickedness?

17 If (AC)the Lord had not been my help,
My soul would soon have dwelt in the abode of silence.
18 If I should say, “(AD)My foot has slipped,”
Your lovingkindness, O Lord, will hold me up.
19 When my anxious thoughts [n]multiply within me,
Your (AE)consolations delight my soul.
20 Can a [o](AF)throne of destruction be allied with You,
One (AG)which devises [p]mischief by decree?
21 They (AH)band themselves together against the [q]life of the righteous
And (AI)condemn [r]the innocent to death.
22 But the Lord has been my (AJ)stronghold,
And my God the (AK)rock of my refuge.
23 He has (AL)brought back their wickedness upon them
And will [s](AM)destroy them in their evil;
The Lord our God will [t]destroy them.

Proverbs 26:6-8

He cuts off his own feet and drinks violence
Who sends a message by the hand of a fool.
Like the legs which [a]are useless to the lame,
So is a proverb in the mouth of fools.
Like [b]one who binds a stone in a sling,
So is he who gives honor to a fool.
