Redemption from a Sojourner
47 ‘Now if the [a]means of a sojourner or of a foreign resident with you becomes sufficient, and a brother of yours becomes so poor with regard to him as to sell himself to a sojourner who resides with you or to the descendants of a sojourner’s family, 48 then he shall have redemption right after he has been sold. One of his brothers may redeem him, 49 or his uncle or his uncle’s son may redeem him, or one of his blood relatives from his family may redeem him; or [b](A)if he prospers, he may redeem himself. 50 He then with his purchaser shall calculate from the year when he sold himself to him up to the year of jubilee; and the price of his sale shall correspond to the number of years. It is like the days of a hired man that he shall be with him. 51 If there are still many years, (B)he shall return part of his purchase price in proportion to them for his own redemption; 52 and if few years remain until the year of jubilee, he shall so calculate with him. In proportion to his years he shall return the amount for his redemption. 53 Like a man hired year by year he shall be with him; (C)he shall not have dominion over him with brutality in your sight. 54 Even if he is not redeemed by [c]these means, (D)he shall still go out in the year of jubilee, he and his sons with him. 55 For the sons of Israel are My slaves; they are My slaves whom I brought out from the land of Egypt. I am Yahweh your God.
He Walks Among Those Who Walk in His Statutes
26 ‘You shall not make for yourselves [d](E)idols, nor shall you set up for yourselves (F)a graven image or (G)a sacred pillar, nor shall you [e]place a (H)carved stone in your land to bow down [f]to it; for I am Yahweh your God. 2 (I)You shall keep My sabbaths and fear My sanctuary; I am Yahweh. 3 (J)If you walk in My statutes and keep My commandments so as to do them, 4 then (K)I shall give you rains in their season, so that the land will give forth its produce and the trees of the field will give forth their fruit. 5 (L)Indeed, your threshing will last for you until grape gathering, and grape gathering will last until sowing time. You will thus eat your [g]food to the full and (M)live securely in your land. 6 (N)I shall also give you peace in the land so that (O)you may lie down, with no one making you tremble. (P)I shall also eliminate wild beasts from the land, and (Q)no sword will pass through your land. 7 But you will pursue your enemies, and they will fall before you by the sword; 8 (R)and five of you will pursue one hundred, and one hundred of you will pursue ten thousand, and your enemies will fall before you by the sword. 9 So I will turn toward you and (S)make you fruitful and multiply you, and I will (T)confirm My covenant with you. 10 (U)And you will eat the old supply and clear out the old because of the new. 11 (V)Moreover, I will [h]make My [i]dwelling among you, and My soul will not loathe you. 12 (W)I will also walk among you and be your God, and you shall be My people. 13 (X)I am Yahweh your God, who brought you out of the land of Egypt so that you would not be their slaves, and (Y)I broke the bars of your yoke and made you walk erect.
Reject His Statutes and He Will Strike You
14 ‘(Z)But if you do not obey Me and do not do all these commandments, 15 if, instead, you (AA)reject My statutes, and if your soul loathes My judgments so as not to do all My commandments and so (AB)break My covenant, 16 I, in turn, will do this to you: I will appoint over you a (AC)sudden terror, consumption and fever that will waste away the eyes and cause the (AD)soul to pine away; also, (AE)you will sow your seed uselessly, for your enemies will eat it up. 17 And I will [j]set My face against you so that you will be [k]defeated before your enemies; and (AF)those who hate you will have dominion over you, and (AG)you will flee when no one is pursuing you. 18 If also after these things you do not obey Me, then I will discipline you (AH)seven times more for your sins. 19 I will also (AI)break down your pride of strength; I will also give your sky over to become like iron and your earth like bronze. 20 (AJ)And your power will be spent uselessly, for your land will not give forth its produce and the trees of the land will not give forth their fruit.
21 ‘If then, you (AK)walk in hostility against Me and are unwilling to obey Me, I will increase the plague on you (AL)seven times according to your sins. 22 (AM)And I will send out among you the beasts of the field, which will bereave you of your children and cut down your cattle and reduce your number so that (AN)your roads lie desolate.
23 ‘(AO)And if by these things you do not accept My discipline, but walk in hostility against Me, 24 then I will (AP)walk in hostility against you; and I, even I, will strike you (AQ)seven times for your sins. 25 I will also bring upon you a sword which will execute (AR)vengeance for the covenant; and when you gather together into your cities, I will send (AS)pestilence among you so that you shall be given over into enemy hands. 26 (AT)When I break your staff of bread, ten women will bake your bread in one oven, and they will bring back your bread by rationed weight so that you will (AU)eat and not become full.
27 ‘Yet, if in spite of this you do not obey Me, but walk in hostility against Me, 28 then (AV)I will walk in wrathful hostility against you, and I, even I, will discipline you seven times for your sins. 29 Further, (AW)you will eat the flesh of your sons, and the flesh of your daughters you will eat. 30 I then (AX)will destroy your high places and cut down your (AY)incense altars and give your corpses to lie on the corpses of your idols, for My soul shall loathe you. 31 And I will give your cities over as a (AZ)waste and will make your (BA)sanctuaries desolate, and I will not (BB)smell your soothing aromas. 32 And I will make (BC)the land desolate, (BD)so that your enemies who inhabit it will themselves feel desolate because of it. 33 You, however, I (BE)will scatter among the nations and will draw out a sword after you, as your land becomes desolate and your cities become waste.
34 ‘(BF)Then the land will make up for its sabbaths all the days of the desolation, and you will be in your enemies’ land; then the land will rest and make up for its sabbaths. 35 All the days of its desolation it will observe the rest which it did not observe on your sabbaths, while you were living on it. 36 As for those of you who may remain, I will also bring (BG)weakness into their hearts in the lands of their enemies. And the sound of a driven leaf will pursue them, and even when no one is pursuing they will flee [l]as though from the sword, and they will fall. 37 (BH)They will therefore stumble over each other as if running from the sword, although no one is pursuing; and you will have no strength [m]to stand up before your enemies. 38 But (BI)you will perish among the nations, and your enemies’ land will consume you. 39 (BJ)So those of you who may remain will rot away in their iniquity in the lands of your enemies; and also in the iniquities of their fathers they will rot away with them.
40 ‘(BK)If they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their fathers, in their unfaithfulness which they committed against Me, and also how they walked in hostility against Me— 41 I also was walking in hostility against them, to bring them into the land of their enemies—(BL)or if their uncircumcised heart becomes humbled so that (BM)they then make up for their iniquity, 42 then I will remember (BN)My covenant with Jacob, and I will remember also (BO)My covenant with Isaac and (BP)My covenant with Abraham as well, and I will remember the land. 43 (BQ)For the land will be forsaken by them and will make up for its sabbaths while it is made desolate without them. They, meanwhile, will be making up for their iniquity [n]because they rejected My judgments and their (BR)soul loathed My statutes. 44 Yet in spite of this, when they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject them, nor will I so (BS)loathe them as (BT)to bring an end to them, (BU)breaking My covenant with them; for I am Yahweh their God. 45 But I will remember for them the (BV)covenant with their ancestors, whom I brought out of the land of Egypt in the sight of the nations, that (BW)I might be their God. I am Yahweh.’”
46 (BX)These are the statutes and judgments and laws which Yahweh has given to be between Himself and the sons of Israel by the hand of Moses at Mount Sinai.
Holy to Yahweh
27 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 2 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘(BY)When a man makes a difficult vow, he shall be valued according to your valuation of persons belonging to Yahweh. 3 If your valuation is of the male from twenty years even to sixty years old, then your valuation shall be [o]fifty shekels of silver, according to (BZ)the shekel of the sanctuary. 4 Or if it is a female, then your valuation shall be thirty shekels. 5 If it be from five years even to twenty years old then your valuation for the male shall be twenty shekels and for the female ten shekels. 6 But if they are from a month even up to five years old, then your valuation shall be (CA)five shekels of silver for the male, and for the female your valuation shall be three shekels of silver. 7 If they are from sixty years old and upward, if it is a male, then your valuation shall be fifteen shekels, and for the female ten shekels. 8 But if he is poorer than your valuation, then he shall be [p]presented before the priest, and the priest shall value him; (CB)according to [q]the means of the one who vowed, the priest shall value him.
9 ‘Now if it is an animal of the kind which [r]men can bring near as an offering to Yahweh, any such that one gives to Yahweh shall be holy. 10 (CC)He shall not replace it or exchange it, a good for a bad, or a bad for a good; or if he does exchange animal for animal, then both it and its substitute shall become holy. 11 If, however, it is any unclean animal of the kind which [s]men do not bring near as an offering to Yahweh, then he shall [t]present the animal before the priest. 12 And the priest shall value it [u]as either good or bad; as you, the priest, value it, so it shall be. 13 But if he should ever wish to redeem it, then he shall add one-fifth of it to your valuation.
Jesus Again Foretells His Death and Resurrection
32 (A)And they were on the road going up to Jerusalem, and Jesus was walking on ahead of them; and they (B)were amazed, and those who followed were fearful. And again He took the twelve aside and began to tell them what was going to happen to Him: 33 “Behold, we are going up to Jerusalem, and (C)the Son of Man will be betrayed to the chief priests and the scribes; and they will condemn Him to death and will deliver Him over to the Gentiles. 34 And they will mock Him and (D)spit on Him, and flog Him and kill Him, and three days later He will rise again.”
A Request for Status
35 (E)Then James and John, the two sons of Zebedee, *came up to Jesus, saying to Him, “Teacher, we want You to do for us whatever we ask of You.” 36 And He said to them, “What do you want Me to do for you?” 37 And they said to Him, “[a]Grant that we (F)may sit, one on Your right and one on Your left, in Your glory.” 38 But Jesus said to them, “You do not know what you are asking. Are you able (G)to drink the cup that I drink, or (H)to be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized?” 39 And they said to Him, “We are able.” And Jesus said to them, “The cup that I drink (I)you shall drink; and you shall be baptized with the baptism with which I am baptized. 40 But to sit on My right or on My left, this is not Mine to give; (J)but it is for those for whom it has been prepared.”
41 (K)And hearing this, the ten began to feel indignant with James and John. 42 And calling them to Himself, Jesus *said to them, “You know that those who are recognized as rulers of the Gentiles lord it over them; and their great men exercise authority over them. 43 But it is not this way among you, (L)but whoever wishes to become great among you shall be your servant; 44 and whoever wishes to be first among you shall be slave of all. 45 For even the Son of Man (M)did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His [b]life a ransom for many.”
Bartimaeus Regains His Sight
46 (N)Then they *came to Jericho. And (O)as He was leaving Jericho with His disciples and a large crowd, a blind beggar named Bartimaeus, the son of Timaeus, was sitting by the road. 47 And when he heard that it was Jesus the (P)Nazarene, he began to cry out and say, “Jesus, (Q)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 48 And many were sternly telling him to be quiet, but he kept crying out all the more, “(R)Son of David, have mercy on me!” 49 And Jesus stopped and said, “Call him here.” So they *called the blind man, saying to him, “(S)Take courage, get up! He is calling for you.” 50 And throwing off his outer garment, he jumped up and came to Jesus. 51 And Jesus answered him and said, “What do you want Me to do for you?” And the blind man said to Him, “[c](T)Rabboni, I want to regain my sight!” 52 And Jesus said to him, “Go; (U)your faith has [d]saved you.” Immediately he regained his sight and began following Him on the road.
Your Throne, O God, Is Forever
For the choir director. According to [a]Shoshannim. Of the sons of Korah. A [b]Maskil. A Song of Love.
45 My heart [c]overflows with a good theme;
I [d]address my [e]verses to the [f]King;
My tongue is the pen of (A)a skillful scribe.
2 You are fairer than the sons of men;
(B)Grace is poured [g]upon Your lips;
Therefore God has (C)blessed You forever.
3 Gird (D)Your sword on Your thigh, O [h](E)Mighty One,
In Your splendor and Your majesty!
4 And in Your majesty ride on victoriously,
For the cause of truth and (F)meekness and righteousness;
Let Your (G)right hand teach You [i]awesome things.
5 Your (H)arrows are sharp;
The (I)peoples fall under You;
Your arrows are (J)in the heart of the King’s enemies.
6 (K)Your throne, O God, is forever and ever;
A scepter of (L)uprightness is the scepter of Your kingdom.
7 You have (M)loved righteousness and hated wickedness;
Therefore God, Your God, has (N)anointed You
With the oil of joy above Your companions.
8 All Your garments are fragrant with (O)myrrh and aloes and cassia;
Out of ivory palaces (P)stringed instruments have made You glad.
9 Kings’ daughters are among (Q)Your noble ladies;
At Your (R)right hand stands the queen in (S)gold from Ophir.
10 Listen, O daughter, give attention and incline your ear:
(T)Forget your people and your father’s house;
11 Then the King will desire your beauty.
Because He is your (U)Lord, (V)bow down to Him.
12 The daughter of (W)Tyre will come with a present;
The (X)rich among the people will seek your favor.
13 The King’s daughter is all glorious within her chamber;
Her clothing is (Y)interwoven with gold.
14 She will be (Z)led to the King (AA)in embroidered work;
The (AB)virgins, her companions who follow her,
Will be brought to You.
15 They will be led forth with gladness and rejoicing;
They will enter into the King’s palace.
22 It is the (A)blessing of Yahweh that makes rich,
And He adds no pain with it.
