Numbers 36 - Deuteronomy 1

Inheritance Through Marriage

36 (A)And the heads of the fathers’ households of the family of the sons of Gilead, the son of Machir, the son of Manasseh, of the families of the sons of Joseph, came near and spoke before Moses and before the leaders, the heads of the fathers’ households of the sons of Israel, and they said, “Yahweh commanded my lord to give the land by lot to the sons of Israel as an inheritance, and my lord (B)was commanded by Yahweh to give the inheritance of Zelophehad our brother to his daughters. But if they [a]marry one of the sons of the other tribes of the sons of Israel, their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of our fathers and will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; thus it will be withdrawn from our allotted inheritance. And when the (C)jubilee of the sons of Israel [b]comes, then their inheritance will be added to the inheritance of the tribe to which they belong; so their inheritance will be withdrawn from the inheritance of the tribe of our fathers.”

Then Moses commanded the sons of Israel according to the [c]word of Yahweh, saying, “The tribe of the sons of Joseph are right in their statements. (D)This is [d]what Yahweh has commanded concerning the daughters of Zelophehad, saying, ‘Let them marry whoever is good in their sight; only they must marry within the family of the tribe of their father.’ Thus (E)no inheritance of the sons of Israel shall [e]be transferred from tribe to tribe, for the sons of Israel shall each [f]hold to the inheritance of the tribe of his fathers. (F)And every daughter who comes into possession of an inheritance of any tribe of the sons of Israel shall be wife to one of the family of the tribe of her father, so that the sons of Israel each may possess the inheritance of his fathers. Thus no inheritance shall [g]be transferred from one tribe to another tribe, for the tribes of the sons of Israel shall each [h]hold to his own inheritance.”

10 Just as Yahweh had commanded Moses, so the daughters of Zelophehad did: 11 (G)And Mahlah, Tirzah, Hoglah, Milcah, and Noah, the daughters of Zelophehad married their uncles’ sons. 12 They married those from the families of the sons of Manasseh the son of Joseph, and their inheritance [i]remained with the tribe of the family of their father.

13 (H)These are the commandments and the judgments which Yahweh commanded to the sons of Israel by the hand of Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan opposite Jericho.

Israel from Seir to Kadesh-barnea

These are the words which Moses spoke to all Israel (I)across the Jordan in the wilderness, in the (J)Arabah opposite [j]Suph, between Paran and Tophel and Laban and Hazeroth and Dizahab. It is eleven days’ journey from (K)Horeb by the way of Mount (L)Seir to (M)Kadesh-barnea. Now it happened, in the (N)fortieth year, on the first day of the eleventh month, Moses spoke to the children of Israel, (O)according to all that [k]Yahweh had commanded him to give to them, after he had (P)struck down Sihon the king of the Amorites, who lived in Heshbon, and (Q)Og the king of Bashan, who lived in (R)Ashtaroth [l]and Edrei. Across the Jordan in the land of Moab, Moses undertook to expound this law, saying,

“Yahweh our God (S)spoke to us at Horeb, saying, ‘You have [m]stayed long enough at this mountain. Turn and set out, and go to (T)the hill country of the Amorites, and to all their neighbors in the Arabah, in the hill country and in the [n]Shephelah and in (U)the [o]Negev and by the seacoast, the land of the Canaanites, and Lebanon, as far as the great river, the river Euphrates. See, I have given over the land before you; go in and possess the land which Yahweh (V)swore to give to your fathers, to Abraham, to Isaac, and to Jacob, to them and to their seed after them.’

“And I spoke to you at that time, saying, ‘(W)I am not able to bear the burden of you alone. 10 Yahweh your God has (X)multiplied you, and behold, you are this day like the stars of heaven in number. 11 May Yahweh, the God of your fathers, increase you a thousand-fold more than you are and bless you, (Y)just as He has [p]promised you! 12 How can I alone bear the load and burden of you and your strife? 13 [q](Z)Choose wise and understanding and experienced men from your tribes, and I will appoint them as your heads.’ 14 Then you answered me and said, ‘The thing which you have said to do is good.’ 15 So I took the heads of your tribes, wise and experienced men, and gave them as heads over you, leaders of thousands and [r]of hundreds, [s]of fifties and [t]of tens, and officers for your tribes.

16 “Then I commanded your judges at that time, saying, ‘Hear the cases between your brothers, and (AA)judge righteously between a man and his brother or the sojourner who is with him. 17 (AB)You shall not show partiality in judgment; you shall hear the small and the great alike. You shall (AC)not fear [u]man, for the judgment is God’s. (AD)The case that is too hard for you, you shall bring to me, and I will hear it.’ 18 (AE)And I commanded you at that time all the things that you should do.

19 “Then we set out from (AF)Horeb and went through all that (AG)great and fearsome wilderness which you saw on the way to the (AH)hill country of the Amorites, just as Yahweh our God had commanded us; and we came to (AI)Kadesh-barnea. 20 And I said to you, ‘You have come to the hill country of the Amorites which Yahweh our God is about to give us. 21 See, Yahweh your God has given over the land before you; go up, take possession, as Yahweh, the God of your fathers, has spoken to you. (AJ)Do not fear or be dismayed.’

22 (AK)Then all of you came near to me and said, ‘Let us send men before us, that they may search out the land for us and bring back to us word of the way by which we should go up and the cities which we shall enter.’ 23 And the thing was good in my sight, and I took twelve of your men, one man for each tribe. 24 (AL)Then they turned and went up into the hill country and came to the valley of Eshcol and spied it out. 25 Then they took some of the fruit of the land in their hands and brought it down to us; and they brought word back to us and said, ‘It is a good land which Yahweh our God is about to give us.’

26 (AM)Yet you were not willing to go up, but (AN)rebelled against the [v]command of Yahweh your God; 27 and (AO)you grumbled in your tents and said, ‘Because Yahweh hates us, He has brought us out of the land of Egypt to give us into the hand of the Amorites to destroy us. 28 Where can we go up? Our brothers have made our hearts melt, saying, “The people are bigger and taller than we; the cities are large and fortified to heaven. And moreover, we saw (AP)the sons of the Anakim there.”’ 29 Then I said to you, ‘Do not be in dread, nor fear them. 30 Yahweh your God, who goes before you, will (AQ)Himself fight on your behalf, [w]just as He did for you in Egypt before your eyes, 31 and in the wilderness where you saw how (AR)Yahweh your God carried you, just as a man carries his son, in all the way which you have walked until you came to this place.’ 32 But [x](AS)for all this, you did not believe Yahweh your God, 33 (AT)who goes before you on your way, (AU)to spy out a place for you to encamp, in fire by night and cloud by day, to show you the way in which you should go.

34 “Then Yahweh heard the sound of your words, and He was angry and (AV)swore an oath, saying, 35 (AW)Not one of these men, this evil generation, shall see the good land which I swore to give your fathers, 36 except Caleb the son of Jephunneh; he shall see it, and (AX)to him and to his sons I will give the land on which he has set foot, because he has followed Yahweh fully.’ 37 (AY)Yahweh was angry with me also on your account, saying, ‘(AZ)Not even you shall enter there. 38 Joshua the son of Nun, who stands before you, (BA)he shall enter there; strengthen him, for (BB)he will cause Israel to inherit it. 39 Moreover, (BC)your little ones who you said would become plunder, and your sons, who this day have (BD)no knowledge of good or evil, shall enter there, and I will give it to them, and they shall possess it. 40 But as for you, (BE)turn around and set out for the wilderness by the way to the [y]Red Sea.’

41 (BF)Then you said to me, ‘We have sinned against Yahweh; we will indeed go up and fight, just as Yahweh our God commanded us.’ And every man of you girded on his weapons of war and regarded it as easy to go up into the hill country. 42 (BG)And Yahweh said to me, ‘Say to them, “Do not go up and do not fight—for I am not among you—so that you are not [z]defeated before your enemies.”’ 43 So I spoke to you, but you would not listen. Instead (BH)you rebelled against the [aa]command of Yahweh and acted presumptuously and went up into the hill country. 44 (BI)And the Amorites who [ab]lived in that hill country came out to meet you and pursued you (BJ)as bees do and crushed you from Seir to Hormah. 45 Then you returned and wept before Yahweh; but (BK)Yahweh did not listen to your voice nor give ear to you. 46 So you remained in (BL)Kadesh many days, according to the days that you remained there.

Luke 5:29-6:11

29 And (A)Levi gave a big reception for Him in his house; and there was a great crowd of (B)tax collectors and other people who were reclining at the table with them. 30 (C)And the Pharisees and their scribes began grumbling at His disciples, saying, “Why do you eat and drink with the tax collectors and [a]sinners?” 31 And Jesus answered and said to them, (D)It is not those who are well who need a physician, but those who are sick. 32 I have not come to call the righteous but sinners to repentance.”

33 And they said to Him, “(E)The disciples of John often fast and offer prayers, the disciples of the Pharisees also do likewise, but Yours eat and drink.” 34 And Jesus said to them, “Can you make the [b]attendants of the bridegroom fast while the bridegroom is with them? 35 (F)But the days will come; and when the bridegroom is taken away from them, then they will fast in those days.” 36 And He was also telling them a parable: “No one tears a piece of cloth from a new garment and puts it on an old garment; otherwise he will both tear the new and the piece from the new will not match the old. 37 And no one puts new wine into old wineskins; otherwise the new wine will burst the skins and it will be spilled out, and the skins will be ruined. 38 But new wine must be put into fresh wineskins. 39 And no one, after drinking old wine wishes for new; for he says, ‘The old is good enough.’”

Lord of the Sabbath

(G)Now it happened that on a Sabbath He was passing through some grainfields, and His disciples (H)were picking and eating the heads of grain, rubbing them in their hands. But some of the Pharisees said, “Why do you do what (I)is not lawful on the Sabbath?” And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you never read (J)what David did when he was hungry, he and those who were with him, how he entered the house of God, and took and ate the [c]consecrated bread which (K)is not lawful for any to eat except the priests alone, and gave it to his companions?” And He was saying to them, “The Son of Man is Lord of the Sabbath.”

Jesus Heals a Man on the Sabbath

(L)Now it happened that on another Sabbath He entered (M)the synagogue and was teaching; and there was a man there [d]whose right hand was withered. And the scribes and the Pharisees (N)were watching Him closely to see if He heals on the Sabbath, so that they might find reason to accuse Him. But He (O)knew [e]what they were thinking, and He said to the man with the withered hand, “Get up and [f]come forward!” And he stood up and [g]came forward. And Jesus said to them, “I ask you, is it lawful to do good or to do harm on the Sabbath, to save a life or to destroy it?” 10 And after (P)looking around at them all, He said to him, “Stretch out your hand!” And he did so, and his hand was restored. 11 But they themselves were filled with [h]rage, and were discussing together what they might do to Jesus.

Psalm 66

Come and See the Works of God

For the choir director. A Song. A Psalm.

66 (A)Make a loud shout to God, all the earth;
Sing praise for the (B)glory of His name;
Establish His (C)praise as glorious.
Say to God, “How [a](D)fearsome are Your works!
Because of the abundance of Your strength Your enemies will [b](E)cower before You.
(F)All the earth will worship You,
And will (G)sing praises to You;
They will sing praises to Your name.” [c]Selah.

(H)Come and see the works of God,
Who is (I)fearsome in His deeds toward the sons of men.
He (J)turned the sea into dry land;
They passed through (K)the river on foot;
There let us (L)be glad in Him!
He (M)rules by His might forever;
His (N)eyes keep watch on the nations;
Let not the rebellious (O)exalt themselves. Selah.

Bless our God, O peoples,
And [d](P)make the sound of His praise heard,
Who [e](Q)establishes us among the living
And (R)does not allow our feet to stumble.
10 For You have (S)tested us, O God;
You have (T)refined us as silver is refined.
11 You (U)brought us into the net;
You established an oppressive burden upon our loins.
12 You made men (V)ride over our heads;
We went through (W)fire and through water,
Yet You (X)brought us out into a place of abundance.
13 I shall (Y)come into Your house with burnt offerings;
I shall (Z)pay You my vows,
14 Which my lips uttered
And my mouth spoke when I was (AA)in distress.
15 I shall (AB)offer to You burnt offerings of fat beasts,
With the smoke of (AC)rams;
I shall make an offering of [f]bulls with male goats. Selah.

16 (AD)Come and hear, all who [g]fear God,
And I will (AE)recount what He has done for my soul.
17 I called out to Him with my mouth,
And [h]He was (AF)exalted with my tongue.
18 If I [i](AG)see wickedness in my heart,
The (AH)Lord [j]will not [k]hear;
19 But certainly (AI)God has heard;
He has given heed to the voice of my prayer.
20 (AJ)Blessed be God,
Who (AK)has not turned away my prayer
Nor His lovingkindness from me.

Proverbs 11:24-26

24 There is one who scatters, and yet increases all the more,
And there is one who holds back what is rightly due, and yet results only in want.
25 The soul [a]that (A)blesses will be [b]enriched,
And he who (B)waters will himself be watered.
26 He who withholds grain, the (C)people will curse him,
But (D)blessing will be on the head of him who (E)sells it.
