Numbers 15:17-16:40

17 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 18 “Speak to the sons of Israel and say to them, ‘When you enter the land where I am going to bring you, 19 then it shall be, that when you eat of the [a](A)food of the land, you shall [b]raise up [c]a contribution offering to Yahweh. 20 (B)Of the first of your [d]dough you shall [e]raise up a cake as a [f]contribution offering; as (C)the [g]contribution offering of the threshing floor, so you shall raise it up. 21 From the first of your [h]dough you shall give to Yahweh a [i]contribution offering throughout your generations.

22 ‘But when you (D)unintentionally fail and do not observe all these commandments, which Yahweh has spoken to Moses, 23 even all that Yahweh has commanded you by the hand of Moses, from the day when Yahweh commanded and onward throughout your generations, 24 then it will be, if it is done (E)unintentionally, hidden from the sight of the congregation, that all the congregation shall offer one bull from the herd for a burnt offering as a soothing aroma to Yahweh, (F)with its grain offering and its drink offering, according to the legal judgment, and one male goat for a sin offering. 25 Then (G)the priest shall make atonement for all the congregation of the sons of Israel, and they will be pardoned; for it was an error, and they have brought their offering, an offering by fire to Yahweh, and their sin offering before Yahweh, for their error. 26 So all the congregation of the sons of Israel will be pardoned, with the sojourner who sojourns among them, for it happened to all the people through (H)error.

27 ‘Also if one person sins (I)unintentionally, then he shall bring near a one year old female goat for a sin offering. 28 (J)And the priest shall make atonement before Yahweh for the person who goes astray when he sins unintentionally, making atonement for him [j]that he may be pardoned. 29 You shall have one law for him who does anything unintentionally, for him who is native among the sons of Israel and for the sojourner who sojourns among them. 30 But the person who does anything with a (K)high hand, whether he is native or a sojourner, that one is blaspheming Yahweh; and that person shall be cut off from among his people. 31 Because he has (L)despised the word of Yahweh and has broken His commandment, that person shall be completely cut off; (M)his [k]guilt will be on him.’”

A Sabbath-breaker Put to Death

32 Now the sons of Israel were in the wilderness, and they found a man (N)gathering wood on the sabbath day. 33 And those who found him gathering wood brought him near to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation; 34 and they put him in [l]custody (O)because it had not been [m]declared what should be done to him. 35 Then Yahweh said to Moses, “The man shall surely be put to death; (P)all the congregation shall stone him with stones outside the camp.” 36 So all the congregation brought him outside the camp and stoned him [n]to death with stones, just as Yahweh had commanded Moses.

37 Yahweh also spoke to Moses, saying, 38 “Speak to the sons of Israel, and tell them that they shall make for themselves (Q)tassels on the corners of their garments throughout their generations, and that they shall put on the tassel of each corner a cord of blue. 39 And it shall be a tassel for you [o]to look at and (R)remember all the commandments of Yahweh, so as to do them and not [p]follow after your own heart and your own eyes, after which you played the harlot, 40 so that you may remember to do all My commandments and (S)be holy to your God. 41 I am Yahweh your God who brought you out from the land of Egypt to be your God; I am Yahweh your God.”

Korah Rises Up Against Moses

16 Now (T)Korah the son of Izhar, the son of Kohath, the son of Levi, with (U)Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab, and On the son of Peleth, sons of Reuben, took others, and they rose up before Moses, [q]together with some of the sons of Israel, 250 leaders of the congregation, [r](V)those called upon by the assembly, men of renown. Then they assembled together (W)against Moses and Aaron, and said to them, “[s](X)You have gone far enough, for all the congregation are holy, every one of them, and (Y)Yahweh is in their midst; so why do you exalt yourselves above the assembly of Yahweh?”

And Moses heard this and (Z)fell on his face; and he spoke to Korah and all his congregation, saying, “Tomorrow morning Yahweh will show who is His, and (AA)who is holy, and will bring him near to Himself; even (AB)the one whom He will choose, He will bring near to Himself. Do this: take censers for yourselves, Korah and all [t]your congregation, and put fire in them, and lay incense upon them in the presence of Yahweh tomorrow; and the man whom Yahweh chooses shall be the one who is holy. [u](AC)You have gone far enough, you sons of Levi!”

Then Moses said to Korah, “Hear now, you sons of Levi, (AD)is it [v]not enough for you that the God of Israel has separated you from the rest of the congregation of Israel, (AE)to bring you near to Himself, to perform the service of the tabernacle of Yahweh, and to stand before the congregation to minister to them; 10 and that He has brought you near, Korah, and all your brothers, sons of Levi, with you? And are you (AF)seeking for the priesthood also? 11 Therefore you and all your congregation are gathered together (AG)against Yahweh; but as for Aaron, [w]who is he that (AH)you grumble against him?”

12 Then Moses sent [x]a summons to Dathan and Abiram, the sons of Eliab; but they said, “We will not come up. 13 Is it [y]not enough that you have brought us up out of a (AI)land flowing with milk and honey (AJ)to put us to death in the wilderness, but you would also lord it over us? 14 Indeed, you have not brought us (AK)into a land flowing with milk and honey, nor have you given us an inheritance of (AL)fields and vineyards. Would you [z](AM)put out the eyes of [aa]these men? We will not come up!”

15 Then Moses became very angry and said to Yahweh, “(AN)Do not regard their offering! (AO)I have not taken a single donkey from them, nor have I done harm to any of them.” 16 And Moses said to Korah, “You and all your congregation be present before Yahweh tomorrow, both you and they along with Aaron. 17 And each of you take his firepan and put incense on [ab]it, and each of you bring his censer near before Yahweh, 250 firepans; also you and Aaron shall each bring his firepan.” 18 So they each took his own censer and put fire on [ac]it, and laid incense on [ad]it; and they stood at the doorway of the tent of meeting, with Moses and Aaron. 19 Thus Korah assembled all the congregation against them at the doorway of the tent of meeting. And (AP)the glory of Yahweh appeared to all the congregation.

20 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses and Aaron, saying, 21 (AQ)Separate yourselves from among this congregation, (AR)that I may consume them instantly.” 22 But they fell on their faces and said, “O God, (AS)God of the spirits of all flesh, (AT)when one man sins, will You be angry with the entire congregation?”

23 Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 24 “Speak to the congregation, saying, ‘(AU)Get back from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan and Abiram.’”

25 Then Moses arose and went to Dathan and Abiram, with the elders of Israel following him, 26 and he spoke to the congregation, saying, “(AV)Turn aside now from the tents of these wicked men, and touch nothing that belongs to them, (AW)lest you be swept away in all their sin.” 27 So they got back from around the dwellings of Korah, Dathan and Abiram; but Dathan and Abiram came out and stood at the doorway of their tents, along with their wives and (AX)their sons and their little ones. 28 And Moses said, “By this you shall know that (AY)Yahweh has sent me to do all these deeds; for this is not from my heart. 29 If these men die [ae]the death of all men or [af]if they suffer the (AZ)fate of all men, then Yahweh has not sent me. 30 But (BA)if Yahweh creates an entirely new thing and the ground opens its mouth and swallows them up with all that is theirs, and they (BB)go down to Sheol alive, then you will know that these men have spurned Yahweh.”

31 And it happened that as he finished speaking all these words, the ground that was under them split open; 32 and (BC)the earth opened its mouth and swallowed them up, and their households, and (BD)all the men who belonged to Korah with their possessions. 33 So they and all that belonged to them went down to Sheol alive; and the earth closed over them, and they perished from the midst of the assembly. 34 Then all Israel who were around them fled at their [ag]outcry, for they said, “Lest the earth swallow us up!” 35 (BE)Fire also came forth from Yahweh and consumed the (BF)250 men who were bringing near the incense.

36 [ah]Then Yahweh spoke to Moses, saying, 37 “Say to Eleazar, the son of Aaron the priest, that he shall take up the censers out of the midst of the [ai]blaze, and you scatter [aj]the burning coals abroad; for they are holy. 38 As for the censers of these [ak]men who have sinned at the cost of their lives, make them into hammered sheets for a plating of the altar, since they brought them near before Yahweh, and they are holy; and (BG)they shall be for a sign to the sons of Israel.” 39 So Eleazar the priest took the bronze censers which the men who were burned had brought near, and they hammered them out as a plating for the altar, 40 as a [al]memorial to the sons of Israel that (BH)no [am]outsider who is not of the seed of Aaron should come near (BI)to burn incense before Yahweh; so that he will not become like Korah and his congregation—just as Yahweh had spoken to him by the hand of Moses.

Mark 15

Jesus Before Pilate

15 (A)And early in the morning the chief priests with the elders and scribes and the whole (B)Sanhedrin, immediately held council; and binding Jesus, led Him away and delivered Him to Pilate. (C)And Pilate questioned Him, “Are You the King of the Jews?” And He answered him and *said, “You yourself say it.” And the chief priests began to accuse Him of many things. Then Pilate was questioning Him again, saying, “You answer nothing? See how many accusations they bring against You!” But Jesus (D)made no further answer; so Pilate marveled.

(E)Now at the feast he used to release for them any one prisoner whom they requested. And the man named Barabbas had been imprisoned with the insurrectionists who had committed murder in the insurrection. And the crowd went up and began asking him to do as he had been accustomed to do for them. And Pilate answered them, saying, “Do you want me to release for you the King of the Jews?” 10 For he was aware that the chief priests had delivered Him over because of envy. 11 But the chief priests stirred up the crowd (F)to ask him to release Barabbas for them instead. 12 And answering again, Pilate was saying to them, “Then what shall I do with Him whom you call the King of the Jews?” 13 And they shouted again, “Crucify Him!” 14 But Pilate was saying to them, “Why? What evil did He do?” But they shouted all the more, “Crucify Him!” 15 And wishing to satisfy the crowd, Pilate released Barabbas for them, and after having Jesus (G)scourged, he delivered Him over to be crucified.

Jesus Is Mocked

16 (H)So the soldiers took Him away into (I)the [a]palace (that is, the [b]Praetorium), and they *called together the whole Roman [c](J)cohort. 17 And they *dressed Him up in purple, and after twisting a crown of thorns, they *put it on Him; 18 and they began to greet Him, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 19 And they kept beating His head with a [d]reed, and spitting on Him; and kneeling, they were bowing down before Him. 20 And after they had mocked Him, they took the purple robe off Him and put His own garments on Him. And they *led Him out to crucify Him.

21 (K)And they *pressed into service a passer-by coming from the countryside, Simon of Cyrene (the father of Alexander and (L)Rufus), to [e]carry His cross.

The Crucifixion

22 (M)Then they *brought Him to the place (N)Golgotha, which is translated, Place of a Skull. 23 And they tried to give Him (O)wine mixed with myrrh; but He did not take it. 24 And they *crucified Him, and *(P)divided up His garments among themselves, casting [f]lots for them to decide who should take what. 25 Now it was the [g](Q)third hour, and they crucified Him. 26 And the inscription of the charge against Him [h]read, “(R)THE KING OF THE JEWS.”

27 And they *crucified two robbers with Him, one on His right and one on His left. 28 [i][And the Scripture was fulfilled which says, “And He was numbered with transgressors.”] 29 And those passing by were blaspheming Him, (S)shaking their heads, and saying, “Ha! You who are going to (T)destroy the [j]sanctuary and rebuild it in three days, 30 save Yourself by coming down from the cross!” 31 In the same way, mocking Him to one another, the chief priests also, along with the scribes, were saying, “(U)He saved others; [k]He cannot save Himself. 32 Let this [l]Christ, (V)the King of Israel, now come down from the cross, so that we may see and believe!” (W)Those who were crucified with Him were also insulting Him.

33 (X)And when the [m](Y)sixth hour came, darkness [n]fell over the whole land until the [o](Z)ninth hour. 34 And at the (AA)ninth hour Jesus cried out with a loud voice, (AB)Eloi, Eloi, lama sabachthani?” which is translated, My God, My God, why have You forsaken Me?” 35 And when some of the bystanders heard it, they began saying, “Look, He is calling for Elijah.” 36 And someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on a reed, and gave Him a drink, saying, “[p]Let us see whether Elijah will come to take Him down.” 37 (AC)And Jesus, uttering a loud cry, breathed His last. 38 (AD)And the veil of the sanctuary was torn in two from top to bottom. 39 (AE)And when the centurion, who was standing [q]right in front of Him, saw [r]the way He breathed His last, he said, “Truly this man was God’s Son!”

40 (AF)And there were also some women looking on from a distance, among whom were Mary Magdalene, and Mary the mother of James (AG)the [s]Less and Joses, and (AH)Salome, 41 who, when He was in Galilee, were following Him and [t](AI)serving Him; and there were many other women who came up with Him to Jerusalem.

Jesus Is Buried

42 (AJ)And when evening had already come, because it was [u](AK)Preparation day, that is, the day before the Sabbath, 43 Joseph of Arimathea came, a (AL)prominent [v]Council member, who himself was (AM)waiting for the kingdom of God; and he (AN)gathered up courage and went in before Pilate, and asked for the body of Jesus. 44 And Pilate wondered if He had died by this time, and summoning the centurion, he questioned him as to whether He already died. 45 And ascertaining this from (AO)the centurion, he granted the body to Joseph. 46 And when Joseph had bought a linen cloth and took Him down, he wrapped Him in the linen cloth and laid Him in a tomb which had been hewn out in the rock. And he rolled a stone against the entrance of the tomb. 47 (AP)And Mary Magdalene and Mary the mother of Joses were looking on to see where He had been laid.

Psalm 54

God Is My Helper

For the choir director. With stringed instruments. A [a]Maskil of David. [b]When the Ziphites came and said to Saul, “Is not David hiding himself among us?”

54 O God, save me by (A)Your name,
And render justice to me by (B)Your might.
(C)O God, hear my prayer;
(D)Give ear to the words of my mouth.
For strangers have (E)risen against me
And (F)ruthless men have (G)sought my [c]life;
They have (H)not set God before them. [d]Selah.

Behold, (I)God is my helper;
The Lord is among those who (J)sustain my soul.
He will (K)return the evil to my foes;
(L)Destroy them (M)in Your truth.

(N)With a freewill offering I will sacrifice to You;
I will give (O)thanks to Your name, O Yahweh, for it is good.
For [e]He has (P)delivered me from all [f]distress,
And my eye has (Q)looked in triumph upon my enemies.

Proverbs 11:5-6

The (A)righteousness of the blameless will make his way straight,
But (B)the wicked will fall by his own wickedness.
The righteousness of the upright will deliver them,
But the treacherous will (C)be captured by their own desire.
