24 So Moses went out and (A)told the people the words of Yahweh. Also, he gathered seventy men of the elders of the people and had them stand around the tent. 25 (B)Then Yahweh came down in the cloud and spoke to him; and He took of the Spirit who was upon him and placed Him upon the seventy elders. And when the Spirit rested upon them, they prophesied. But they did not do it again.
26 But two men had remained in the camp; the name of one was Eldad and the name of the [a]other Medad. And (C)the Spirit rested upon them (now they were among those who had been registered, but had not gone out to the tent), and they prophesied in the camp. 27 So a young man ran and told Moses and said, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.” 28 Then (D)Joshua the son of Nun, the attendant of Moses from his youth, said, “(E)Moses, my lord, restrain them.” 29 But Moses said to him, “Are you jealous for my sake? (F)Would that all the people of Yahweh were prophets, that Yahweh would put His Spirit upon them!” 30 Then Moses [b]returned to the camp, both he and the elders of Israel.
The Quail and the Plague
31 (G)Now there went forth a wind from Yahweh, and it brought quail from the sea, and let them fall beside the camp, about a day’s journey on this side and a day’s journey on the other side, all around the camp and [c]about two [d]cubits over the surface of the ground. 32 And the people [e]spent all day and all night and all the next day, and gathered the quail (he who gathered least gathered [f]ten (H)homers), and they spread them out for themselves all around the camp. 33 (I)While the meat was still between their teeth, before it was chewed, the anger of Yahweh was kindled against the people, and Yahweh struck the people with a very severe plague. 34 So the name of that place was called [g](J)Kibroth-hattaavah because there they buried the people who had been greedy. 35 From Kibroth-hattaavah (K)the people set out for Hazeroth, and they [h]remained at Hazeroth.
Miriam and Aaron Speak Against Moses
12 Then Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had taken as a wife (for he had taken a (L)Cushite woman); 2 (M)and they said, “Has Yahweh indeed spoken only through Moses? Has He not spoken through us as well?” And Yahweh heard it. 3 (Now the man Moses was (N)very humble, more than any man who was on the face of the earth.) 4 Suddenly Yahweh said to Moses and Aaron and to Miriam, “You three come out to the tent of meeting.” So the three of them came out. 5 (O)Then Yahweh came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the doorway of the tent, and He called [i]Aaron and Miriam. And then both came forward, 6 and He said,
“Hear now My words:
If there is a prophet among you,
I, Yahweh, shall make Myself known to him in a (P)vision.
I shall speak with him in a (Q)dream.
7 Not so, with (R)My servant Moses,
(S)He is faithful in all My household;
8 (T)With him I speak mouth to mouth,
Indeed clearly, and not in riddles,
And he beholds (U)the form of Yahweh.
Why then were you not afraid
To speak against My servant, against Moses?”
9 So the anger of Yahweh burned against them, and (V)He went away. 10 But the cloud withdrew from over the tent, and behold, (W)Miriam was leprous, as (X)white as snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam, and behold, she was leprous. 11 Then Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, I beg you, (Y)do not place this sin on us, in which we have acted foolishly and in which we have sinned. 12 Oh, do not let her be like one dead, whose flesh is half eaten away when he comes from his mother’s womb!” 13 And Moses cried out to Yahweh, saying, “O God, (Z)heal her, I pray!” 14 But Yahweh said to Moses, “If her father had but (AA)spit in her face, would she not bear her dishonor for seven days? Let her be shut up for seven days (AB)outside the camp, and afterward she may be received again.” 15 So (AC)Miriam was shut up outside the camp for seven days, and the people did not set out until Miriam was received again.
16 Afterward, however, the people set out from Hazeroth and camped in the wilderness of Paran.
The Spies Sent into Canaan
13 Then (AD)Yahweh spoke to Moses saying, 2 “(AE)Send out for yourself men so that they may spy out the land of Canaan, which I am going to give to the sons of Israel; you shall send a man from each of their fathers’ tribes, every one a leader among them.” 3 So Moses sent them from the wilderness of Paran at the [j]command of Yahweh, all of them men who were heads of the sons of Israel. 4 These then were their names:
from the tribe of Reuben, Shammua the son of Zaccur;
5 from the tribe of Simeon, Shaphat the son of Hori;
6 from the tribe of Judah, (AF)Caleb the son of Jephunneh;
7 from the tribe of Issachar, Igal the son of Joseph;
8 from the tribe of Ephraim, (AG)Hoshea the son of Nun;
9 from the tribe of Benjamin, Palti the son of Raphu;
10 from the tribe of Zebulun, Gaddiel the son of Sodi;
11 from the tribe of Joseph, from the tribe of Manasseh, Gaddi the son of Susi;
12 from the tribe of Dan, Ammiel the son of Gemalli;
13 from the tribe of Asher, Sethur the son of Michael;
14 from the tribe of Naphtali, Nahbi the son of Vophsi;
15 from the tribe of Gad, Geuel the son of Machi.
16 These are the names of the men whom Moses sent to spy out the land; but Moses called (AH)Hoshea the son of Nun, Joshua.
17 So Moses sent them to spy out the land of Canaan and said to them, “Go up [k]there into (AI)the [l]Negev; then go up into the hill country. 18 And see what the land is like, and whether the people who live in it are strong or weak, whether they are few or many. 19 And how is the land in which they live, is it good or bad? And how are the cities in which they live, are they [m]like open camps or with fortifications? 20 (AJ)And how is the land, is it fat or lean? Are there trees in it or not? [n]Make an (AK)effort then to get some of the fruit of the land.” Now the time was the time of the first ripe grapes.
21 So they went up and spied out the land from (AL)the wilderness of Zin as far as Rehob, [o](AM)at Lebo-hamath. 22 And they had gone up into (AN)the Negev and [p]came to Hebron where (AO)Ahiman, Sheshai, and Talmai, the [q]descendants of (AP)Anak were. (Now Hebron was built seven years before (AQ)Zoan in Egypt.)
23 Then they came to the [r]valley of [s](AR)Eshcol and from there cut down a branch with a single cluster of grapes; and they carried it on a pole between two men with some of the pomegranates and the figs. 24 That place was called the valley of [t]Eshcol, because of the cluster which the sons of Israel cut down from there.
The Spies Recount What They Saw
25 Then they returned from spying out the land, at the end of forty days, 26 and went and came to Moses and Aaron and to all the congregation of the sons of Israel [u]in the wilderness of Paran, at (AS)Kadesh; and they brought back word to them and to all the congregation and showed them the fruit of the land. 27 Thus they recounted to him and said, “We went in to the land where you sent us; and (AT)it certainly does flow with milk and honey, and (AU)this is its fruit. 28 Nevertheless, (AV)the people who live in the land are strong, and the cities are fortified and very large; and moreover, we saw (AW)the [v]descendants of Anak there. 29 Amalek is living in the land of (AX)the Negev and the Hittites and the Jebusites and (AY)the Amorites are living in the hill country, and (AZ)the Canaanites are living by the sea and by the side of the Jordan.”
30 Then Caleb quieted the people [w]before Moses and said, “We should by all means go up and take possession of it, for we are surely able to overcome it.” 31 But the men who had gone up with him said, “(BA)We are not able to go up against the people, for they are too strong for us.” 32 So they gave out to the sons of Israel (BB)a bad report of the land which they had spied out, saying, “The land, which we have passed through to spy out on, is (BC)a land that devours its [x]inhabitants; and (BD)all the people whom we saw in it are men of great size. 33 There also we saw the (BE)Nephilim (the sons of Anak are part of the Nephilim); and (BF)we became like grasshoppers in our own sight, and so we were in their sight.”
The Lord’s Supper
22 (A)And while they were eating, He took some bread, and [a]after a (B)blessing, He broke it, and gave it to them, and said, “Take it; this is My body.” 23 And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He gave it to them, and they all drank from it. 24 And He said to them, “This is My (C)blood of the (D)covenant, which is poured out for many. 25 Truly I say to you, I will never again drink of the fruit of the vine until that day when I drink it new in the kingdom of God.”
26 (E)And after singing a hymn, they went out to (F)the Mount of Olives.
27 (G)And Jesus *said to them, “You will all [b]fall away, because it is written, ‘(H)I will strike down the shepherd, and the sheep shall be scattered.’ 28 But after I have been raised, (I)I will go ahead of you to Galilee.” 29 But Peter said to Him, “Even though all may [c]fall away, yet I will not.” 30 And Jesus *said to him, “Truly I say to you, that (J)today, this very night, before (K)a rooster crows twice, you yourself will deny Me three times.” 31 But Peter kept saying insistently, “If I have to die with You, I will not deny You!” And they all were saying the same thing also.
Jesus Prays in Gethsemane
32 (L)Then they *came to a place named Gethsemane; and He *said to His disciples, “Sit here until I have prayed.” 33 And He *took with Him Peter and James and John, and began to be very (M)distressed and troubled. 34 And He *said to them, “(N)My soul is deeply grieved to the point of death; remain here and keep watch.” 35 And He went a little beyond them, and fell to the ground and began to pray that if it were possible, (O)the hour might pass from Him. 36 And He was saying, “(P)Abba! Father! All things are possible for You; remove this cup from Me; (Q)yet not what I will, but what You will.” 37 And He *came and *found them sleeping, and *said to Peter, “Simon, are you sleeping? Could you not keep watch for one hour? 38 (R)Keep watching and praying that you may not come into temptation; the spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak.” 39 And again He went away and prayed, saying the same [d]words. 40 And again He came and found them sleeping, for their eyes were very heavy; and they did not know what to answer Him. 41 And He *came the third time, and *said to them, “[e]Are you still sleeping and resting? It is enough; (S)the hour has come; behold, the Son of Man is being [f]betrayed into the hands of sinners. 42 Get up, let us go; behold, the one who betrays Me is at hand!”
The Betrayal and Arrest of Jesus
43 (T)And immediately while He was still speaking, Judas, one of the twelve, *came up, and with him was a crowd with swords and clubs, who were from the chief priests and the scribes and the elders. 44 Now he who was betraying Him had given them a signal, saying, “Whomever I kiss, He is the one; seize Him and lead Him away [g]under guard.” 45 And after coming, Judas, having immediately gone to Him, *said, “(U)Rabbi!” and kissed Him. 46 And they laid hands on Him and seized Him. 47 But one of those who stood by drew his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and [h]cut off his ear. 48 And Jesus answered and said to them, “Have you come out with swords and clubs to arrest Me, as you would against a robber? 49 Every day I was with you (V)in the temple teaching, and you did not seize Me; but this has taken place in order that the Scriptures would be fulfilled.” 50 And they all left Him and fled.
51 And a young man was following Him, wearing nothing but a linen sheet over his naked body; and they *seized him. 52 But he [i]pulled free of the linen sheet and escaped naked.
I Trust in the Lovingkindness of God
For the choir director. A [a]Maskil of David. [b]When Doeg the Edomite came and told Saul and said to him, “David has come to the house of Ahimelech.”
52 Why do you (A)boast in evil, O mighty man?
The (B)lovingkindness of God endures all day long.
2 Your tongue devises (C)destruction,
Like a (D)sharp razor, (E)O worker of deceit.
3 You (F)love evil more than good,
(G)Falsehood more than speaking what is right. [c]Selah.
4 You love all words that devour,
O (H)deceitful tongue.
5 [d]But God will break you down forever;
He will snatch you up and (I)tear you away from your tent,
And (J)uproot you from the (K)land of the living, Selah.
6 So that the righteous will (L)see and fear,
And will (M)laugh at him, saying,
7 “Behold, the man who would not set God as his strength,
But (N)trusted in the abundance of his riches
And (O)was strong in his destruction.”
