An Oracle Concerning the Valley of Vision

22 The [a]oracle concerning the (A)valley of vision.

What is the matter with you now, that you have all gone up to the (B)housetops?
You who were full of noise,
You roaring city, you (C)exultant town;
Your slain were (D)not slain with the sword,
Nor [b]did they die in battle.
(E)All your rulers have fled together,
And have been captured [c]without the bow;
All of you who were found were captured together,
[d]Though they had fled far away.
Therefore I say, “Turn your gaze away from me,
Let me (F)weep bitterly,
Do not insist on comforting me concerning the destruction of the daughter of my people.”
(G)For Lord Yahweh of hosts has a (H)day of confusion, (I)oppression, and panic
(J)In the valley of vision,
A breaking down of walls
And a crying [e]to the mountain.
(K)Now Elam took up the quiver
With the chariots, [f]infantry, and horsemen;
And (L)Kir uncovered the shield.
Then your choicest valleys were full of chariots,
And the horsemen took up fixed positions at the gate.
And He revealed the [g]defense of Judah.
In that day you looked to the weapons of the (M)house of the forest,
And you saw that the breaches
In the wall of the city of David were many;
And you (N)collected the waters of the lower pool.
10 Then you counted the houses of Jerusalem
And tore down houses to fortify the wall.
11 And you made a reservoir (O)between the two walls
For the waters of the (P)old pool.
But you did not look to Him who made it,
Nor did you see Him who formed it long ago.

12 Therefore in that day Lord Yahweh of hosts called you to (Q)weeping, to wailing,
To (R)shaving the head, and to wearing sackcloth.
13 Instead, behold, there is (S)joy and gladness,
Killing of cattle and slaughtering of sheep,
Eating of meat and drinking of wine:
(T)Let us eat and drink, for tomorrow we may die.”
14 But Yahweh of hosts revealed Himself in my ears,
“Surely this (U)iniquity (V)shall not be atoned for you
(W)Until you die,” says Lord Yahweh of hosts.

15 Thus says Lord Yahweh of hosts,

“Come, go to this steward,
To (X)Shebna, who is in charge of the royal household,
16 ‘What right do you have here,
And whom do you have here,
That you have (Y)hewn a tomb for yourself here,
You who hew a tomb on the height,
You who carve a dwelling place for [h]yourself in the cliff?
17 Behold, Yahweh is about to hurl you headlong, O man.
And He is about to grasp you firmly
18 And He will surely roll you tightly like a ball,
To be (Z)cast into a vast country;
There you will die,
And there your glorious chariots will be,
You disgrace of your master’s house.’
19 I will (AA)push you out of your office,
And [i]I will pull you down from your station.
20 Then it will be in that day,
That I will summon My servant (AB)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah,
21 And I will clothe him with your tunic
And tie your sash securely about him.
I will give your [j]authority into his hand,
And he will become a (AC)father to the inhabitants of Jerusalem and to the house of Judah.
22 Then I will set (AD)the key of the (AE)house of David on his shoulder,
When he opens no one will shut,
When he shuts no one will (AF)open.
23 I will drive him like a (AG)peg in a firm place,
And he will become a (AH)throne of glory to his father’s house.

24 So they will hang on him all the glory of his father’s house, offspring and [k]issue, all the least of vessels, from bowls to all the jars. 25 In that day,” declares Yahweh of hosts, “the (AI)peg driven in a firm place will give way; it will even (AJ)break off and fall, and the load hanging on it will be cut off, for (AK)Yahweh has spoken.”

An Oracle Concerning Tyre

23 The [l]oracle concerning (AL)Tyre.

Wail, O (AM)ships of (AN)Tarshish,
For Tyre is destroyed, without house or [m](AO)harbor;
It is revealed to them from the land of [n](AP)Cyprus.
(AQ)Be silent, you inhabitants of the coastland,
You merchants of Sidon;
[o]Your messengers crossed the sea
And were on many waters.
(AR)The [p]grain of [q](AS)Shihor, the harvest of the Nile was her revenue;
And she was the nations’ (AT)gain.
Be ashamed, O (AU)Sidon;
For the sea speaks, the strong defense of the sea, saying,
“I have neither travailed nor given birth;
I have neither brought up choice men nor reared virgins.”
When the report reaches Egypt,
They will be in (AV)travail at the report of Tyre.
Pass over to (AW)Tarshish;
Wail, O inhabitants of the coastland.
Is this your (AX)exultant city,
Whose origin is from days of old,
Whose feet used to lead her to sojourn in distant places?

Who has counseled this against Tyre, (AY)the bestower of crowns,
Whose merchants were princes, whose traders were the honored of the earth?
(AZ)Yahweh of hosts has counseled it, to (BA)defile the pride of all beauty,
To make contemptuous all the (BB)honored of the earth.
10 [r]Overflow your land like the Nile, O daughter of Tarshish;
There is no more [s]restraint.
11 He has (BC)stretched His hand out (BD)over the sea;
He has (BE)made the kingdoms tremble;
Yahweh has given a command concerning Canaan to (BF)demolish its strong defenses.

12 So He said, “(BG)You shall exult no more, O crushed virgin daughter of Sidon.
Arise, pass over to [t](BH)Cyprus; even there you will find no rest.”

13 Behold, the land of the Chaldeans—this is the people which was not; (BI)Assyria established it for (BJ)desert creatures—they erected their siege towers, they stripped its palaces, (BK)they made it a ruin.

14 Wail, O (BL)ships of Tarshish,
For your strong defense is destroyed.

15 Now it will be in that day, that Tyre will be forgotten for (BM)seventy years like the days of one king. At the end of seventy years it will happen to Tyre as in the song of the harlot:

16 Take your harp, walk about the city,
O forgotten harlot;
Pluck the strings skillfully, sing many songs,
That you may be remembered.

17 And it will be at (BN)the end of seventy years that Yahweh will visit Tyre. Then she will go back to her harlot’s wages and will (BO)play the harlot with all the kingdoms [u]on the face of the earth. 18 And her (BP)gain and her harlot’s wages will be (BQ)set apart to Yahweh; it will not be treasured up or hoarded, but her gain will become sufficient food and choice attire for those who inhabit the presence of Yahweh.

Yahweh Will Empty the Earth

24 Behold, Yahweh (BR)empties the earth to destruction, eviscerates it, distorts its surface, and scatters its inhabitants. And the people will be like the priest, the male slave like his master, the female slave like her mistress, the buyer like the seller, the lender like the borrower, the (BS)creditor like the debtor. The earth will be completely emptied to destruction and completely plundered, for Yahweh has spoken this word. The (BT)earth mourns and withers; the world languishes and withers; the (BU)exalted of the people of the earth languish. The earth is also (BV)polluted [v]by its inhabitants, for they trespassed laws, violated statutes, (BW)broke the everlasting covenant. Therefore, a (BX)curse devours the earth, and those who inhabit it are held guilty. Therefore, the (BY)inhabitants of the earth are burned, and few men remain.

The (BZ)new wine mourns;
The vine languishes;
All the glad of heart sigh.
The (CA)joy of tambourines ceases;
The rumbling of those exulting stops;
The joy of the harp ceases.
They do not drink wine with song;
(CB)Strong drink is (CC)bitter to those who drink it.
10 The (CD)city of chaos is broken down;
(CE)Every house is shut up so that none may enter.
11 There is an (CF)outcry in the streets concerning the wine;
(CG)All gladness [w]turns to gloom.
The joy of the earth is taken away into exile.
12 Desolation remains in the city,
And the (CH)gate is struck down to ruins.
13 For (CI)thus it will be in the midst of the earth among the peoples,
As the [x]shaking of an olive tree,
As the gleanings when the grape harvest is over.
14 (CJ)They lift up their voices, they shout for joy;
They cry out from the [y]west concerning the majesty of Yahweh.
15 Therefore (CK)glorify Yahweh in the [z]east,
The (CL)name of Yahweh, the God of Israel,
In the [aa](CM)coastlands of the sea.
16 From the (CN)ends of the earth we hear songs, “(CO)Glory to the Righteous One,”
But I say, “[ab](CP)I waste away! [ac]I waste away! Woe is me!
The (CQ)treacherous deal treacherously,
And the treacherous deal very treacherously.”
17 (CR)Panic and pit and pitfall
Are upon you, O inhabitant of the earth.
18 Then it will be that he who flees the sound of panic will fall into the pit,
And he who [ad]climbs out of the pit will be caught in the pitfall;
For the (CS)windows [ae]above are opened, and the (CT)foundations of the earth quake.
19 (CU)The earth is broken asunder;
The earth is (CV)split through;
The earth is shaken violently.
20 The earth (CW)reels to and fro like a drunkard
And it totters like a [af]shack,
For its (CX)transgression is heavy upon it,
And it will fall, (CY)never to rise again.
21 So it will be in that day,
That Yahweh will (CZ)punish the host of heights on high,
And the (DA)kings of the earth on earth.
22 They will be gathered together
Like (DB)prisoners in the [ag]pit,
And will be confined in prison;
And after many days they will (DC)be punished.
23 Then the (DD)moon will be humiliated and the sun ashamed,
For (DE)Yahweh of hosts will reign on (DF)Mount Zion and in Jerusalem,
And His glory will be before His elders.

Galatians 2:17-3:9

17 But if, while seeking to be justified in Christ, we ourselves have also been found (A)sinners, is Christ then a minister of sin? (B)May it never be! 18 For if I rebuild what I have once destroyed, I (C)prove myself to be a transgressor. 19 For through [a]the Law I (D)died to [b]the Law, so that I might live to God. 20 I have been (E)crucified with Christ, and it is no longer I who live, but (F)Christ lives in me. And the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in (G)the Son of God, who (H)loved me and (I)gave Himself up for me. 21 I do not set aside the grace of God, for (J)if righteousness comes through [c]the Law, then Christ died needlessly.”

The Righteous Shall Live by Faith

O foolish (K)Galatians, who bewitched you, before whose eyes Jesus Christ (L)was publicly portrayed as crucified? This is the only thing I want to learn from you: did you receive the Spirit by the works of [d]the Law, or by [e](M)hearing with faith? Are you so foolish? Having begun [f]by the Spirit, are you now [g]being perfected by the flesh? Did you [h]suffer so many things for nothing—(N)if indeed it was for nothing? So then, does He who (O)provides you with the Spirit and (P)works [i]miracles among you, do it by the works of [j]the Law, or by [k](Q)hearing with faith?

Just as (R)Abraham (S)believed God and it was counted to him as righteousness, so know that (T)those who are of faith, those are (U)sons of Abraham. And the Scripture, foreseeing that God [l]would justify the [m]Gentiles by faith, proclaimed the gospel beforehand to Abraham, saying, “(V)All the nations will be blessed in you.” So then (W)those who are of faith are blessed with [n]Abraham, the believer.

Psalm 60

Through God We Shall Do Valiantly

For the choir director. According to [a]Shushan Eduth. A [b]Mikhtam of David. For teaching. [c]When he struggled with Aram-naharaim and with Aram-zobah, and Joab returned, and smote twelve thousand of Edom in the Valley of Salt.

60 O God, (A)You have rejected us. You have [d](B)broken us;
You have been (C)angry; Oh, (D)restore us.
You have made the [e](E)land quake, You have split it open;
(F)Heal its breaches, for it shakes.
You have (G)caused Your people to see hardship;
You have given us [f]wine to (H)drink that causes reeling.
You have given a (I)banner to those who fear You,
[g]In order to flee to it from the bow. [h]Selah.
(J)That Your (K)beloved may be rescued,
(L)Save with Your right hand, and answer [i]us!

God has spoken in His [j](M)holiness:
“I will exult, I will portion out (N)Shechem and measure out the valley of (O)Succoth.
(P)Gilead is Mine, and Manasseh is Mine;
(Q)Ephraim also is the [k]helmet of My head;
Judah is My [l](R)scepter.
(S)Moab is My washbowl;
Over (T)Edom I shall throw My shoe;
Make a loud shout, O (U)Philistia, because of Me!”

Who will bring me into the fortified city?
Who [m]will lead me to Edom?
10 Have You Yourself, O God, not (V)rejected us?
And (W)will You, O God, not go forth with our armies?
11 Oh give us help against the adversary,
For (X)salvation [n]by man is worthless.
12 [o]Through God we shall (Y)do valiantly,
And it is He who will (Z)tread down our adversaries.

Proverbs 23:15-16

15 My son, if your heart is (A)wise,
My own heart also will be glad;
16 And my [a]inmost being will exult
When your lips speak (B)upright things.
