10 “Now (A)I will be on high,” says Yahweh,
“Now I will be lifted up, now I will be lifted up.
11 You have (B)conceived [a]chaff, you will give birth to stubble;
[b]My (C)breath will consume you like a fire.
12 The peoples will be burned to lime,
(D)Like cut thorns which are burned in the fire.
13 “You who are far away, (E)hear what I have done;
And you who are near, [c]acknowledge My might.”
14 (F)Sinners in Zion are in dread;
(G)Trembling has seized the godless.
“Who among us can sojourn with (H)the consuming fire?
Who among us can sojourn with [d]continual (I)burning?”
15 He who (J)walks righteously and speaks uprightly;
He who rejects greedy gain of [e]oppression,
And shakes his hands so that they hold no bribe;
He who stops his ears from hearing about bloodshed
And (K)shuts his eyes from looking upon evil;
16 He will dwell on the heights,
(L)His refuge will be the strongholds of the cliffs;
(M)His bread will be given him,
His water will be sure.
17 Your eyes will behold (N)the King in His beauty;
They will see (O)a far-distant land.
18 Your heart will meditate on (P)terror:
“Where is (Q)he who counts?
Where is he who weighs?
Where is he who counts the towers?”
19 You will no longer see a fierce people,
A people of [f](R)unintelligible speech [g]which no one comprehends,
Of a stammering tongue [h]which no one understands.
20 (S)Behold Zion, the city of our appointed times;
Your eyes will see Jerusalem, an (T)abode at ease,
(U)A tent which will not be folded;
Its stakes will never be pulled up,
Nor any of its cords ever be torn apart.
21 But there the Mighty One, Yahweh, will be for us
A place of (V)rivers and wide canals
On which no boat with oars will go,
And on which no mighty ship will pass—
22 For Yahweh is our (W)judge,
Yahweh is (X)our lawgiver,
Yahweh is (Y)our king;
(Z)He will save us—
23 Your cords hang slack;
They cannot hold the base of their mast firmly,
Nor spread out the sail.
Then the (AA)prey of an abundant spoil will be divided;
(AB)The lame will take the plunder.
24 And no one who dwells there will say, “I am (AC)sick”;
The people who inhabit [i]there will be (AD)forgiven their iniquity.
Yahweh’s Wrath Against the Nations
34 Draw near, (AE)O nations, to hear; and pay attention, O peoples!
(AF)Let the earth hear, as well as its fullness, the world and all that springs from it.
2 For the (AG)indignation of Yahweh is against all the nations,
And His wrath against all their [j]hosts;
He has [k](AH)devoted them to destruction;
He has given them over to (AI)slaughter.
3 So their slain will be (AJ)cast out,
And their corpses [l]will give off their (AK)stench,
And the mountains will [m]be drenched with their (AL)blood.
4 And (AM)all the host of heaven will rot away,
And the (AN)sky will be rolled up like a scroll;
All their hosts will also wither away
As a leaf withers from the vine,
Or as one withers from the fig tree.
5 For (AO)My sword is satiated in heaven;
Behold, it shall descend for judgment upon (AP)Edom
And upon the people whom I have (AQ)devoted to destruction.
6 The sword of Yahweh is filled with blood;
It is [n]sated with fat, with the blood of lambs and goats,
With the fat of the kidneys of rams.
For Yahweh has a sacrifice in (AR)Bozrah
And a great slaughter in the land of (AS)Edom.
7 (AT)And wild oxen will also [o]fall with them,
And (AU)young bulls with strong ones;
Thus their land will be (AV)soaked with blood,
And their dust [p]become greasy with fat.
8 For Yahweh has a day of (AW)vengeance,
A year of recompense for the [q]cause of Zion.
9 [r]And its streams will be turned into pitch,
And its dust into (AX)brimstone,
And its land will become burning pitch.
10 It will (AY)not be quenched night or day;
Its (AZ)smoke will go up forever.
From (BA)generation to generation it will be laid waste;
(BB)None will pass through it forever and ever.
11 But [s](BC)pelican and hedgehog will possess it,
And [t]owl and raven will dwell in it;
And He will stretch over it the (BD)line of utter formlessness
And the [u]plumb line of utter void.
12 Its nobles—there is (BE)no one there
Whom they may proclaim king—
And all its princes will be (BF)non-existent.
13 And thorns will come up in its (BG)fortified towers,
Weeds and thistles in its fortified cities;
It will also be a haunt of (BH)jackals
And an abode of ostriches.
14 And the desert (BI)creatures will meet with the [v]wolves;
The [w](BJ)hairy goat also will cry to its kind;
Surely, the [x]night creature will obtain relief there
And will find itself a resting place.
15 The [y]owl will make its nest and find its escape there,
And it will hatch its eggs and gather them in its shade.
Surely, (BK)the [z]falcons will be gathered there,
Every one with its kind.
16 Seek from the (BL)book of Yahweh, and read:
Not one of these will be missing;
None will lack its mate.
For [aa](BM)His mouth has commanded,
And His Spirit has gathered them.
17 He has cast the (BN)lot for them,
And His hand has divided it to them by (BO)line.
They shall possess it forever;
From (BP)generation to generation they will dwell in it.
The Joy of the Redeemed
35 The (BQ)wilderness and the desert will be delighted,
And the [ab](BR)Arabah will rejoice and flourish;
Like the crocus
2 It will (BS)flourish profusely
And (BT)rejoice with rejoicing and shout of joy.
The (BU)glory of Lebanon will be given to it,
The majesty of (BV)Carmel and Sharon.
They will see the (BW)glory of Yahweh,
The majesty of our God.
3 (BX)Strengthen limp hands, and give courage to the knees of the stumbling.
4 Say to those with an (BY)anxious heart,
“Be strong, fear not.
Behold, your God will come with (BZ)vengeance;
The (CA)recompense of God will come,
But He will (CB)save you.”
5 Then the (CC)eyes of the blind will be opened,
And the ears of the deaf will be unstopped.
6 Then the (CD)lame will leap like a deer,
And the (CE)tongue of the mute will shout for joy.
For waters will break forth in the (CF)wilderness
And streams in the [ac]Arabah.
7 Then the [ad]scorched land will become a pool
And the thirsty ground (CG)springs of water;
In the (CH)haunt of jackals, its resting place,
Grass becomes reeds and rushes.
8 (CI)And a [ae]roadway will be there, (CJ)a highway,
And it will be called the Highway of (CK)Holiness.
The unclean will not pass by on it,
But it will be for him who walks in that way,
And (CL)ignorant fools will not wander on it.
9 No (CM)lion will be there,
Nor will any vicious beast go up on it;
[af]These will not be found there.
But (CN)the redeemed will walk there,
10 And (CO)the ransomed of Yahweh will return
And come with joyful shouting to Zion,
With everlasting gladness upon their heads.
They will [ag]attain delight and gladness,
And (CP)sorrow and sighing will flee away.
Sennacherib Invades Judah
36 (CQ)Now it happened in the fourteenth year of King Hezekiah, that (CR)Sennacherib king of Assyria came up against all the fortified cities of Judah and seized them. 2 And the (CS)king of Assyria sent Rabshakeh from Lachish to Jerusalem to King Hezekiah with a heavy military force. And he stood by the (CT)conduit of the upper pool on the highway of the [ah]fuller’s field. 3 Then (CU)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and (CV)Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came out to him.
4 Then (CW)Rabshakeh said to them, “Say now to Hezekiah, ‘Thus says the great king, the king of Assyria, “What is this trust that you have? 5 I say, ‘Your counsel and might for the war are only [ai]empty words.’ Now in whom do you trust, that (CX)you have rebelled against me? 6 Behold, you trust in the (CY)staff of this crushed reed, even on Egypt, on which if a man leans, it will go into his [aj]hand and pierce it. (CZ)So is Pharaoh king of Egypt to all who trust in him. 7 But if you say to me, ‘We trust in Yahweh our God,’ is it not He (DA)whose high places and whose altars Hezekiah has taken away and has said to Judah and to Jerusalem, ‘You shall worship before this altar’? 8 So now, [ak]come make a bargain with my master the king of Assyria, and I will give you two thousand horses, if you are able on your part to give riders for them. 9 How then can you [al]turn away one [am]official of the least of my master’s servants and (DB)trust in Egypt for chariots and for horsemen? 10 So now, have I come up [an]without the approval of Yahweh against this land to make it a ruin? (DC)Yahweh said to me, ‘Go up against this land and make it a ruin.’”’”
11 Then Eliakim and Shebna and Joah said to Rabshakeh, “Speak now to your servants in (DD)Aramaic, for we [ao]understand it; and do not speak with us in [ap](DE)Judean in the hearing of the people who are on the wall.” 12 But Rabshakeh said, “Has my master sent me only to your master and to you to speak these words, and not to the men who sit on the wall, doomed to eat their own dung and drink their own urine with you?”
13 Then Rabshakeh stood and (DF)cried with a loud voice in Judean and said, “Hear the words of the great king, the king of Assyria. 14 Thus says the king, ‘Do not let Hezekiah (DG)deceive you, for he will not be able to deliver you; 15 and do not let Hezekiah make you (DH)trust in Yahweh, saying, “Yahweh will surely deliver us, this city will not be given into the hand of the king of Assyria.” 16 Do not listen to Hezekiah,’ for thus says the king of Assyria, ‘[aq]Make your peace with me and come out to me, and eat each of his (DI)vine and each of his fig tree, and drink each of the (DJ)waters of his own cistern, 17 until I come and take you away to a land like your own land, a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards. 18 Beware lest Hezekiah mislead you, saying, “(DK)Yahweh will deliver us.” Has any one of the gods of the nations delivered his land from the hand of the king of Assyria? 19 Where are the gods of (DL)Hamath and Arpad? Where are the gods of (DM)Sepharvaim? And when have they (DN)delivered Samaria from my hand? 20 Who among all the (DO)gods of these lands [ar]have delivered their land from my hand, that (DP)Yahweh would deliver Jerusalem from my hand?’”
21 But they were silent and (DQ)answered him not a word, for the king’s commandment was, “Do not answer him.” 22 Then (DR)Eliakim the son of Hilkiah, who was over the household, and (DS)Shebna the scribe, and Joah the son of Asaph, the recorder, came to Hezekiah with their clothes torn and told him the words of Rabshakeh.
13 For you were called to (A)freedom, brothers; (B)only do not turn your freedom into an opportunity for the flesh, but through love (C)serve one another. 14 For (D)the whole Law is fulfilled in one word, in this: “(E)You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” 15 But if you (F)bite and devour one another, beware that you are not consumed by one another.
Walk by the Spirit
16 But I say, (G)walk by the Spirit and you will not carry out (H)the desire of the flesh. 17 For (I)the flesh [a]sets its desire against the Spirit, and the Spirit against the flesh; for these are in opposition to one another, (J)so that you do not do the things that you want. 18 But if you are (K)led by the Spirit, (L)you are not under the Law. 19 Now the deeds of the flesh are evident, which are: (M)sexual immorality, impurity, sensuality, 20 idolatry, (N)sorcery, enmities, (O)strife, jealousy, outbursts of anger, (P)selfish ambition, dissensions, [b](Q)factions, 21 envying, (R)drunkenness, carousing, and things like these, of which I forewarn you, just as I have forewarned you, that those who practice such things will not (S)inherit the kingdom of God. 22 But (T)the fruit of the Spirit is (U)love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, goodness, faithfulness, 23 gentleness, (V)self-control. Against such things (W)there is no law. 24 Now those who [c]belong to (X)Christ Jesus (Y)crucified the flesh with its passions and (Z)desires.
25 If we live by the Spirit, let us also [d]walk in step with (AA)the Spirit. 26 Let us not become those with (AB)vain glory, challenging one another, envying one another.
The Righteous Will Be Glad in Yahweh
For the choir director. A Psalm of David.
64 Hear my voice, O God, in (A)my [a]complaint;
(B)Guard my life from dread of the enemy.
2 Hide me from the (C)secret counsel of evildoers,
From the tumult of the (D)workers of iniquity,
3 Who (E)have sharpened their tongue like a sword.
They (F)aimed bitter speech as their arrow,
4 To (G)shoot [b]from places of hiding at the blameless;
Suddenly they shoot at him, and (H)do not fear.
5 They [c]hold fast to themselves an evil purpose;
They [d]talk of (I)laying snares secretly;
They say, “(J)Who can see them?”
6 They searched out unrighteousness, saying,
“We have completed a diligent search”;
For the [e](K)inward thought of a man and his heart are [f]deep.
7 But (L)God [g]will shoot them with an arrow;
Suddenly they will be wounded.
8 So [h]they will (M)cause their own tongue (N)to turn against them;
All who see them will (O)shake their head.
9 Then all men [i]will (P)fear,
And they [j]will (Q)declare the work of God,
And [k]will consider [l]what He has done.
10 The righteous man will be (R)glad in Yahweh and will (S)take refuge in Him;
And all the upright in heart will boast.
23 (A)Buy truth, and do not sell it,
Get wisdom and discipline and understanding.
