Jeremiah 6:16-8:7

16 Thus says Yahweh,

“Stand by the ways and see and ask for the (A)ancient paths,
Where the good way is, and walk in it;
And (B)you will find rest for your souls.
But they said, ‘We will not walk in it.’
17 And I set (C)watchmen over you, saying,
‘Give heed to the sound of the trumpet!’
But they said, ‘We will not give heed.’
18 Therefore hear, O nations,
And know, O congregation, what is among them.
19 (D)Hear, O earth: behold, I am bringing evil on this people,
The (E)fruit of their [a]plans,
Because they have not given heed to My words,
And as for My law, they have (F)rejected it also.
20 (G)For what purpose does (H)frankincense come to Me from Sheba
And the [b](I)sweet cane from a distant land?
(J)Your burnt offerings are not acceptable,
And your sacrifices are not pleasing to Me.”
21 Therefore, thus says Yahweh,
“Behold, (K)I am [c]laying stumbling blocks before this people.
And they will stumble against them,
(L)Fathers and sons together;
Neighbor and [d]friend will perish.”

Mourn the Coming Destroyer

22 Thus says Yahweh,

“Behold, (M)a people is coming from the land of the north,
And a great nation will be aroused from the (N)remote parts of the earth.
23 They take hold of (O)bow and spear;
They are (P)cruel and have no compassion;
Their voice (Q)roars like the sea,
And they ride on horses,
Arranged as a man for the battle
Against you, O daughter of Zion!”
24 We have (R)heard the report of it;
Our hands are limp.
(S)Distress has taken hold of us,
Pain as of a woman in childbirth.
25 (T)Do not go out into the field
And (U)do not walk on the road,
For the enemy has a sword;
(V)Terror is on every side.
26 O daughter of my people, (W)gird yourself with sackcloth
And (X)roll in ashes;
[e](Y)Mourn as for an only son,
A lamentation most bitter.
For suddenly the destroyer
Will come upon us.

27 “I have (Z)made you a tester of metals and [f]an assayer among My people,
That you may know and test their way.”
28 All of them are rebelliously stubborn,
(AA)Going about as a slanderer.
They are (AB)bronze and iron;
They, all of them, are corrupt.
29 The bellows blow fiercely;
The lead [g]is consumed by the fire;
In vain the refining goes on,
But the (AC)evil ones are not [h]separated.
30 (AD)They call them rejected silver
Because (AE)Yahweh has rejected them.

Yahweh’s Warning from the Temple Gate

The word that came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, (AF)Stand in the gate of the house of Yahweh, and you shall call out there this word, and you shall say, ‘Hear the word of Yahweh, all you of Judah, who enter by these gates to worship Yahweh!’” Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “(AG)Make your ways and your deeds good, and I will let you dwell in this place. (AH)Do not trust in lying words, saying, ‘[i]This is the temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh, the temple of Yahweh.’ For (AI)if you truly make your ways and your deeds good, if you truly (AJ)do justice between a man and his neighbor, if you do not oppress the sojourner, the [j](AK)orphan, or the widow, and do not shed (AL)innocent blood in this place, nor (AM)walk after other gods to your own evil demise, then I will let you (AN)dwell in this place, in the (AO)land that I gave to your fathers forever and ever.

“Behold, you are trusting in (AP)lying words to no avail. Will you steal, murder, and commit adultery and swear while lying, and (AQ)burn incense to Baal and walk after (AR)other gods that you have not known, 10 then (AS)come and stand before Me in (AT)this house, which is called by My name, and say, ‘We are delivered!’—that you may do all these abominations? 11 Has (AU)this house, which is called by My name, become a (AV)robbers’ den in your sight? Behold, (AW)I, even I, have seen it,” declares Yahweh.

12 “But go now to My place which was in (AX)Shiloh, where I (AY)made My name dwell at the first, and (AZ)see what I did to it because of the evil of My people Israel. 13 And now, because you have done all these works,” declares Yahweh, “and I spoke to you, (BA)rising up early and (BB)speaking, but you did not hear, and I (BC)called you but you did not answer, 14 therefore, I will do to the (BD)house which is called by My name, (BE)in which you trust, and to the place which I gave you and your fathers, as I (BF)did to Shiloh. 15 I will (BG)cast you out of My presence, as I have cast out all your brothers, all the seed of (BH)Ephraim.

16 “As for you, (BI)do not pray for this people and do not lift up a cry of lamentation or prayer for them and do not intercede with Me, for I am not hearing you. 17 Are you not seeing what they are doing in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem? 18 The [k]children gather wood, and the fathers make the fire burn, and the women knead dough to make cakes for the queen of heaven; and they (BJ)pour out drink offerings to other gods in order to (BK)provoke Me. 19 (BL)Do they provoke Me?” declares Yahweh. “Is it not themselves they provoke to the (BM)shame of their own face?” 20 Therefore thus says Lord Yahweh, “Behold, My (BN)anger and My wrath will be poured out on this place, on man and on beast and on the (BO)trees of the field and on the fruit of the ground; and it will burn and not be quenched.”

21 Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “Add your (BP)burnt offerings to your sacrifices and (BQ)eat flesh. 22 For I did not (BR)speak to your fathers or command them in the day that I brought them out of the land of Egypt concerning burnt offerings and sacrifices. 23 But this is [l]what I commanded them, saying, ‘(BS)Listen to My voice, and (BT)I will be your God, and you will be My people; and you will walk in the entire way which I command you, that it may (BU)be well with you.’ 24 Yet they (BV)did not listen or incline their ear, but walked in their own counsels and in the stubbornness of their evil heart and [m](BW)went backward and not forward. 25 Since the day that your fathers came out of the land of Egypt until this day, I have (BX)sent you all My slaves the prophets, daily rising up early and sending them. 26 Yet they did not listen to Me or incline their ear, but (BY)stiffened their neck; they (BZ)did more evil than their fathers.

27 “You shall (CA)speak all these words to them, but they will not listen to you; and you shall call to them, but they will (CB)not answer you. 28 You shall say to them, ‘This is the nation that (CC)did not listen to the voice of Yahweh their God or receive discipline; [n](CD)truth has perished and has been cut off from their mouth.

29 (CE)Cut off [o]your hair and cast it away,
And (CF)lift up a funeral lamentation on the bare heights;
For Yahweh has (CG)rejected and abandoned
The generation of His wrath.’

30 For the sons of Judah have done that which is evil in My sight,” declares Yahweh, “they have (CH)set their detestable things in the house, which is called by My name, to defile it. 31 They have (CI)built the high places of Topheth, which is in the valley of the son of Hinnom, to (CJ)burn their sons and their daughters in the fire, which I (CK)did not command, and it did not come upon My heart.

32 (CL)Therefore, behold, days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when it will no longer be called Topheth or the valley of the son of Hinnom, but the valley of the Slaughter; for they will (CM)bury in Topheth [p]because there is no other place. 33 The (CN)dead bodies of this people will be food for the birds of the sky and for the beasts of the earth; and no one will frighten them away. 34 Then I will make to (CO)cease from the cities of Judah and from the streets of Jerusalem the voice of joy and the voice of gladness, the voice of the bridegroom and the voice of the bride, for the (CP)land will become a waste place.

The Faithlessness of Jerusalem

“At that time,” declares Yahweh, “they will (CQ)bring out the bones of the kings of Judah and the bones of its princes, and the bones of the priests and the bones of the prophets, and the bones of the inhabitants of Jerusalem from their graves. And they will spread them out to the sun, the moon, and to all the (CR)host of heaven, which they have loved and which they have served, and which they have walked after and which they have sought, and which they have worshiped. They will not be gathered (CS)or buried; (CT)they will be as dung on the face of the ground. And (CU)death will be chosen rather than life by all the remnant that remains of this evil family, that remains in all the (CV)places to which I have banished them,” declares Yahweh of hosts.

“You shall say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh,

“Do men (CW)fall and not get up again?
Does one turn away and not [q]turn back?
Why then has this people, Jerusalem,
[r](CX)Turned away in continual faithlessness?
They (CY)hold fast to deceit;
They (CZ)refuse to return.
I (DA)have given heed and heard,
They have spoken what is not right;
(DB)No man regretted his evil,
Saying, ‘What have I done?’
Everyone turned to his course,
Like a (DC)horse charging into the battle.
Even the stork in the sky
(DD)Knows her seasons;
And the (DE)turtledove and the swift and the crane
Keep the time of their [s]migration;
But (DF)My people do not know
The legal judgment of Yahweh.

Colossians 2:8-23

(A)See to it that no one takes you captive through (B)philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the (C)elementary principles of the world, and not according to Christ. For in Him all the (D)fullness of Deity dwells bodily, 10 and in Him you have been (E)filled, (F)who is the head [a]over all (G)rule and authority; 11 in whom (H)you were also circumcised with a circumcision made without hands, in the removal of (I)the body of the flesh, in the circumcision of Christ, 12 having been (J)buried with Him in baptism, in which you were also (K)raised up with Him through faith in the working of God, who (L)raised Him from the dead. 13 And you being (M)dead [b]in your transgressions and the uncircumcision of your flesh, He (N)made you alive with Him, having graciously forgiven us all our transgressions. 14 Having canceled out (O)the certificate of debt consisting of decrees against us which was hostile to us, (P)He also has taken it out of the way, having nailed it to the cross. 15 Having [c](Q)disarmed the (R)rulers and authorities, He (S)made a public display of them, having (T)triumphed over them in [d]Him.

16 Therefore, no one is to (U)judge you in (V)food and (W)drink, or in respect to a (X)festival or a (Y)new moon or a (Z)Sabbath [e]day— 17 things which are only a (AA)shadow of what is to come; but the [f]substance [g]belongs to Christ. 18 Let no one keep [h](AB)defrauding you of your prize by (AC)delighting in [i]self-abasement and the worship of the angels, going into detail about visions he has seen, (AD)being puffed up for nothing by his (AE)fleshly mind, 19 and not holding fast to (AF)the head, from whom (AG)the entire body, being supplied and held together by the joints and [j]ligaments, grows with a growth [k]that is from God.

20 (AH)If you have died with Christ [l]to the (AI)elementary principles of the world, (AJ)why, as if you were living in the world, do you submit yourself to (AK)decrees: 21 “Do not handle, nor taste, nor touch”? 22 Which [m]deal with everything (AL)destined to perish [n]with use, which are in accordance with the (AM)commands and teachings of men; 23 which are matters having, to be sure, a [o]word of wisdom in [p](AN)self-made religion and self-abasement and (AO)severe treatment of the body, but are of no value against (AP)fleshly indulgence.

Psalm 78:1-31

That the Generation to Come Might Know

A [a]Maskil of Asaph.

78 (A)Give ear, O my people, to my [b]instruction;
(B)Incline your ears to the words of my mouth.
I will (C)open my mouth in a parable;
I will pour forth (D)dark sayings of old,
Which we have heard and known,
And (E)our fathers have recounted to us.
We will (F)not conceal them from their children,
But (G)recount to the generation to come the praises of Yahweh,
And His strength and His (H)wondrous deeds that He has done.

For He established a (I)testimony in Jacob
And set a (J)law in Israel,
Which He (K)commanded our fathers
That they should [c](L)teach them to their children,
(M)That the generation to come might know, even (N)the children yet to be born,
That they may arise and (O)recount them to their children,
That they should set their confidence in God
And (P)not forget the deeds of God,
But (Q)observe His commandments,
And (R)not be like their fathers,
A (S)stubborn and rebellious generation,
A generation that (T)did not [d]prepare its heart
And whose spirit was not (U)faithful to God.

The sons of Ephraim [e]were (V)archers equipped with bows,
Yet (W)they turned back in the day of battle.
10 They (X)did not keep the covenant of God
And refused to (Y)walk in His law;
11 So they (Z)forgot His acts
And His [f]wondrous deeds that He had shown them.
12 (AA)He did wonders before their fathers
In the land of Egypt, in the (AB)field of Zoan.
13 He (AC)split the sea and caused them to pass through,
And He made the waters stand (AD)up like a heap.
14 Then He led them with the cloud by (AE)day
And all the night with a (AF)light of fire.
15 He was (AG)splitting the rocks in the wilderness
And so gave them abundant drink like the ocean depths.
16 He (AH)brought forth streams also from the cliff face
And caused waters to run down like rivers.

17 Yet they still continued to sin against Him,
To (AI)rebel against the Most High in the desert.
18 And in their heart they (AJ)put God to the test
By asking for (AK)food according to their desire.
19 Then they spoke against God;
They said, “(AL)Can God prepare a table in the wilderness?
20 Behold, He (AM)struck the rock so that waters gushed out,
And streams were overflowing;
Can He give bread also?
Will He prepare [g](AN)meat for His people?”

21 Therefore Yahweh heard and [h]was (AO)full of wrath;
And a fire was kindled against Jacob
And anger also mounted against Israel,
22 Because they (AP)did not believe in God
And did not trust in His salvation.
23 Yet He commanded the skies above
And (AQ)opened the doors of heaven;
24 He (AR)rained down manna upon them to eat
And gave them (AS)grain from heaven.
25 Man ate the bread of [i]angels;
He sent them provision (AT)to satisfy.
26 He (AU)led forth the east wind in the heavens
And by His strength He guided the south wind.
27 Then He rained [j]meat upon them like the dust,
Even (AV)winged fowl like the sand of the seas,
28 He caused them to fall in the midst of His camp,
All around His dwelling places.
29 So they (AW)ate and were very satisfied,
And their desire He brought to them.
30 [k]Before they had satisfied their desire,
(AX)While their food was in their mouths,
31 The (AY)anger of God rose against them
And killed [l]some of their (AZ)stoutest ones,
And [m]subdued the choice men of Israel.

Proverbs 24:26

26 He kisses the lips
Who responds with right words.
