Jeremiah 19-21

The Broken Jar

19 Thus says Yahweh, “Go and buy a (A)potter’s earthenware (B)jar, and take some of the (C)elders of the people and some of the (D)elders of the priests. Then go out to the (E)valley of Ben-hinnom, which is by the entrance of the potsherd gate, and there (F)call out the words that I tell you and say, ‘Hear the word of Yahweh, O (G)kings of Judah and inhabitants of Jerusalem: thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am about to bring a (H)calamity upon this place, at which the (I)ears of everyone that hears of it will tingle. Because they have (J)forsaken Me and have (K)made this a foreign place and have burned incense in it to (L)other gods, that neither they nor their fathers nor the kings of Judah had ever known, and because they have filled this place with the (M)blood of the innocent and have built the (N)high places of Baal to burn their (O)sons in the fire as burnt offerings to Baal, a thing which I never commanded or spoke of, nor did it ever come upon My heart, therefore, behold, (P)days are coming,” declares Yahweh, “when this place will no longer be called (Q)Topheth or (R)the valley of Ben-hinnom, but rather the valley of Slaughter. I will (S)empty out the counsel of Judah and Jerusalem to the point of destruction in this place, and (T)I will cause them to fall by the sword before their enemies and by the hand of those who seek their life; and I will give over their (U)carcasses as food for the birds of the sky and the beasts of the earth. I will also make this city an (V)object of horror and of hissing; (W)everyone who passes by it will be [a]horrified and hiss because of all its [b]slaughtering. I will make them (X)eat the flesh of their sons and the flesh of their daughters, and they will eat one another’s flesh in the siege and in the distress with which their enemies and those who seek their life will distress them.”’

10 “Then you are to break the (Y)jar in the sight of the men who accompany you, 11 and you shall say to them, ‘Thus says Yahweh of hosts, “Just so will I (Z)break this people and this city, even as one breaks a potter’s vessel, which cannot again be repaired; and they will (AA)bury in Topheth [c]because there is no other place for burial. 12 This is what I will do to this place and its inhabitants,” declares Yahweh, “so as to make this city like Topheth. 13 And the (AB)houses of Jerusalem and the houses of the kings of Judah will be (AC)defiled like the place Topheth because of all the (AD)houses on whose rooftops they burned incense to (AE)all the heavenly host and (AF)poured out drink offerings to other gods.”’”

14 Then Jeremiah came from Topheth, where Yahweh had sent him to prophesy; and he stood in the (AG)court of the house of Yahweh and said to all the people: 15 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, I am about to bring on this city and all its towns the entire calamity that I have spoken against it because they have (AH)stiffened their necks so (AI)as not to hear My words.’”

Yahweh Speaks Against Pashhur

20 Then Pashhur the priest, the son of (AJ)Immer, who was (AK)ruling overseer in the house of Yahweh, heard Jeremiah prophesying these words; and Pashhur had Jeremiah the prophet (AL)struck and put him in the (AM)stocks that were at the upper (AN)Benjamin Gate, which was by the house of Yahweh. Now it happened that on the next day, Pashhur released Jeremiah from the stocks. And Jeremiah said to him, “Pashhur is not the name Yahweh has (AO)called you, but rather [d](AP)Magor-missabib. For thus says Yahweh, ‘Behold, I am going to make you a (AQ)terror to yourself and to all your friends; and while (AR)your eyes look on, they will fall by the sword of their enemies. So I will (AS)give over all Judah to the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will take them away into (AT)exile to Babylon and will strike them down with the sword. I will also give over all the (AU)wealth of this city, all the fruit of its labor, and all its precious things; even all the treasures of the kings of Judah I will give over to the (AV)hand of their enemies, and they will plunder them, take them away, and bring them to Babylon. And you, (AW)Pashhur, and all who live in your house will go into captivity; and you will enter Babylon, and there you will die, and there you will be buried, you and all your (AX)friends to whom you have (AY)prophesied lies.’”

Jeremiah Curses the Day He Was Born

O Yahweh, You have enticed me, and I was enticed;
You were (AZ)stronger than I, and You prevailed.
I have become a (BA)laughingstock all day long;
Everyone (BB)mocks me.
For each time I speak, I cry aloud;
I (BC)call out violence and devastation
Because for me the (BD)word of Yahweh has [e]resulted
In reproach and derision all day long.
But if I say, “I will not (BE)remember Him
Or speak anymore in His name,”
Then in (BF)my heart it becomes like a burning fire
Shut up in my bones;
And I am weary of holding it in,
And (BG)I cannot prevail.
10 For (BH)I have heard the bad report of many,
(BI)Terror on every side!
(BJ)Denounce him; yes, let us denounce him!”
[f]All my (BK)trusted friends,
Keeping watch for my fall, say:
“Perhaps he will be [g]deceived, so that we may (BL)prevail against him
And take our revenge on him.”
11 But (BM)Yahweh is with me like a ruthless mighty one;
Therefore my (BN)persecutors will stumble and not prevail.
They will be utterly ashamed, because they have not prospered,
With an (BO)everlasting dishonor that will not be forgotten.
12 Yet, O Yahweh of hosts, You who (BP)test the righteous,
Who see the [h]mind and the heart;
Let me (BQ)see Your vengeance on them,
For (BR)to You I have revealed my cause.
13 (BS)Sing to Yahweh, praise Yahweh!
For He has (BT)delivered the soul of the needy one
From the hand of evildoers.

14 Cursed be the (BU)day when I was born;
Let the day not be blessed when my mother bore me!
15 Cursed be the man who brought the good news
To my father, saying,
“A [i](BV)baby boy has been born to you!”
And made him very glad.
16 But let that man be like the cities
Which Yahweh (BW)overthrew without [j]relenting,
And let him hear an (BX)outcry in the morning
And a [k]shout of war at noon,
17 Because he did not (BY)put me to death from the womb,
So that my mother would have been my grave,
And her womb ever pregnant.
18 Why did I ever come forth from the womb
To (BZ)look on trouble and sorrow,
So that my (CA)days have been spent in (CB)shame?

Jeremiah’s Message for Zedekiah

21 The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh when (CC)King Zedekiah sent to him (CD)Pashhur, the son of Malchijah, and (CE)Zephaniah the priest, the son of Maaseiah, saying, “Please (CF)inquire of Yahweh on our behalf, for [l](CG)Nebuchadnezzar king of (CH)Babylon is warring against us; perhaps Yahweh will deal with us (CI)according to all His [m]wonderful acts, so that the enemy will go up from us.”

Then Jeremiah said to them, “Thus you shall say to Zedekiah, ‘Thus says Yahweh, the God of Israel, “Behold, I am about to (CJ)turn back the weapons of war which are in your hands, with which you are warring against the king of Babylon and the Chaldeans who are besieging you outside the wall; and I will (CK)gather them into the center of this city. I (CL)Myself will war against you with an (CM)outstretched hand and a strong arm, even in (CN)anger and wrath and great indignation. I will also strike down the inhabitants of this city, both man and beast; they will die of a great (CO)pestilence. Then afterwards,” declares Yahweh, “(CP)I will give over Zedekiah king of Judah and his servants and the people, even those who remain in this city from the pestilence, the sword, and the famine, into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon and into the hand of their enemies and into the hand of those who seek their lives; and he will strike them down with the edge of the sword. He (CQ)will not show pity on them nor spare nor have compassion.”’

“You shall also say to this people, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I (CR)set before you the way of life and the way of death. He who (CS)inhabits this city will die by the (CT)sword and by famine and by pestilence; but he who goes out and falls away to the Chaldeans who are besieging you will live, and he will have his own life as spoil. 10 For I have (CU)set My face against this city for [n]evil and not for good,” declares Yahweh. “It will be (CV)given into the hand of the king of Babylon, and he will (CW)burn it with fire.”’

11 “Then say to the household of the (CX)king of Judah, ‘Hear the word of Yahweh, 12 O (CY)house of David, thus says Yahweh:

(CZ)Render justice [o]every (DA)morning;
And deliver the person who has been robbed from the [p]power of his oppressor,
(DB)Lest My wrath go forth like fire
And (DC)burn with none to extinguish it,
Because of the evil of their deeds.

13 “Behold, (DD)I am against you, O (DE)inhabitant of the valley,
O [q]rocky plain,” declares Yahweh,
“You men who say, ‘(DF)Who will come down against us?
Or who will enter into our dwelling places?’
14 But I will punish you (DG)according to the [r]results of your deeds,” declares Yahweh,
“And I will (DH)kindle a fire in its forest
That it may devour all its surroundings.”’”

1 Thessalonians 5:4-28

But you, brothers, are not in (A)darkness, that the day would overtake you [a](B)like a thief, for you are all (C)sons of light and sons of day. We are not of night nor of (D)darkness; so then let us not (E)sleep as [b](F)others do, but let us be awake and [c](G)sober. For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk, get (H)drunk at night. But since (I)we are of the day, let us (J)be [d]sober, having put on the (K)breastplate of (L)faith and love, and as a (M)helmet, the (N)hope of salvation. For God has not appointed us for (O)wrath, but for (P)obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, 10 (Q)who died for us, so that whether we are awake or asleep, we will live together with Him. 11 Therefore, [e]comfort one another and (R)build up one another, just as you also are doing.

Admonishment and Instruction

12 But we ask of you, brothers, that you (S)know those (T)who labor among you, and (U)lead you in the Lord and admonish you, 13 and that you regard them very highly in love because of their work. (V)Live in peace with one another. 14 And we urge you, brothers, admonish (W)the [f]unruly, encourage (X)the fainthearted, help (Y)the weak, be (Z)patient with everyone. 15 See that (AA)no one repays another with evil for evil, but always (AB)seek after that which is good for one another and for all people. 16 (AC)Rejoice always; 17 (AD)pray without ceasing; 18 in everything (AE)give thanks, for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus. 19 (AF)Do not quench the Spirit; 20 do not despise (AG)prophecies, 21 but (AH)examine all things; (AI)hold fast to that which is good; 22 abstain from every [g]form of evil.

23 Now (AJ)may the God of peace (AK)Himself sanctify you entirely, and may your (AL)spirit and soul and body be preserved complete, (AM)without blame at (AN)the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ. 24 (AO)Faithful is He who (AP)calls you, who also will do it.

25 Brothers, (AQ)pray for us[h].

26 (AR)Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss. 27 I implore you by the Lord to (AS)have this letter read to all the (AT)brothers.

28 (AU)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you.

Psalm 82

God Stands in Judgment

A Psalm of Asaph.

82 God takes His (A)stand in the congregation of [a]God;
He (B)judges in the midst of [b](C)gods.
How long will you (D)judge unrighteously
And (E)show partiality to the wicked? [c]Selah.
(F)Give justice to the poor and the orphan;
Justify the afflicted and destitute.
(G)Protect the poor and needy;
Deliver them out of the hand of the wicked.

They (H)do not know and do not understand;
They (I)walk about in darkness;
All the (J)foundations of the earth are shaken.
[d]I (K)said, “You are gods,
And all of you are (L)sons of the Most High.
Nevertheless (M)you will die like men
And you will fall like any (N)one of the princes.”
(O)Arise, O God, (P)judge the earth!
For it is You who (Q)will inherit all the nations.

Proverbs 25:9-10

(A)Plead your case with your neighbor,
And (B)do not reveal the secret of another,
10 Lest he who hears it bring disgrace upon you,
And the bad report about you will not turn away.
