Jeremiah 35-36

The Rechabites Listen to Jonadab

35 The word which came to Jeremiah from Yahweh in the days of (A)Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, saying, “Go to the house of the (B)Rechabites and speak to them and bring them into the house of Yahweh, into one of the (C)chambers, and give them wine to drink.” Then I took Jaazaniah the son of Jeremiah, son of Habazziniah, and his brothers and all his sons and the whole house of the Rechabites, and I brought them into the house of Yahweh, into the chamber of the sons of Hanan the son of Igdaliah, the (D)man of God, which was beside the chamber of the officials, which was above the chamber of Maaseiah the son of Shallum, (E)the doorkeeper. Then I put before the [a]men of the house of the Rechabites pitchers full of wine and cups; and I said to them, “(F)Drink wine!” But they said, “We will not drink wine, for (G)Jonadab the son of (H)Rechab, our father, commanded us, saying, ‘You shall (I)not drink wine, you or your sons, forever. And you shall not build a house, and you shall not sow seed, and you shall not plant a vineyard or own one; but (J)tents you shall inhabit all your days, that you may live (K)many days in the land where you (L)sojourn.’ So we have (M)listened to the voice of Jonadab the son of Rechab, our father, in all that he commanded us, not to drink wine all our days, we, our wives, our sons, or our daughters, nor to build ourselves houses to inhabit; and we (N)do not have vineyard or field or seed. 10 We have only (O)inhabited tents and have listened and have done according to all that (P)Jonadab our father commanded us. 11 But it happened that when (Q)Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon came up against the land, we said, ‘Come, let us (R)come to Jerusalem before the military force of the Chaldeans and before the military force of the Arameans.’ So we have inhabited Jerusalem.”

Yahweh Warns of Judah’s Discipline

12 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah, saying, 13 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Go and say to the men of Judah and the inhabitants of Jerusalem, “(S)Will you not receive discipline by listening to My words?” declares Yahweh. 14 “The (T)words of Jonadab the son of Rechab, which he commanded his sons, not to drink wine, are established. So they do not drink wine to this day, for they have listened to their father’s command. But I have spoken to you, (U)rising up early and speaking; yet you have (V)not listened to Me. 15 Also I have sent to you all My (W)slaves the prophets, rising up early and sending, saying: ‘(X)Turn now every man from his evil way and make good your deeds, and (Y)do not walk after other gods to [b]serve them. Then you will (Z)inhabit the land which I have given to you and to your fathers; but you have not (AA)inclined your ear or listened to Me. 16 Indeed, the sons of Jonadab the son of Rechab have (AB)established the command of their father which he commanded them, but this people has not listened to Me.’”’ 17 Therefore thus says Yahweh, the God of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Behold, (AC)I am bringing on Judah and on all the inhabitants of Jerusalem all the harmful evil that I have spoken against them because I (AD)spoke to them but they did not listen, and I have called them but they did not answer.’”

18 Then Jeremiah said to the house of the Rechabites, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have (AE)listened to the command of Jonadab your father, kept all his commands, and done according to all that he commanded you, 19 therefore thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “Jonadab the son of Rechab (AF)shall not have a man cut off from (AG)standing before Me [c]always.”’”

Jeremiah’s Scroll Read in the Temple

36 Now it happened that in the (AH)fourth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from Yahweh, saying, “Take a (AI)scroll of a book and write on it all the (AJ)words which I have spoken to you concerning (AK)Israel and concerning Judah and concerning all the (AL)nations, from the (AM)day I first spoke to you, from the days of Josiah, even to this day. (AN)Perhaps the house of Judah will hear all the evil which I devise [d]to bring on them, in order that every man will (AO)turn from his evil way; then I will (AP)forgive their iniquity and their sin.”

Then Jeremiah called (AQ)Baruch the son of Neriah, and Baruch wrote on a [e](AR)scroll [f]at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of Yahweh which He had spoken to him. And Jeremiah commanded Baruch, saying, “I am [g](AS)confined; I cannot go into the house of Yahweh. So you shall go and (AT)read from the scroll, which you have (AU)written [h]at my dictation, the words of Yahweh [i]in the hearing of the people in the house of Yahweh on a (AV)fast day. And also you shall read them in the hearing of all the people of Judah who come from their cities. (AW)Perhaps their supplication will [j]come before Yahweh, and everyone will turn from his evil way, for (AX)great is the anger and the wrath that Yahweh has spoken against this people.” So Baruch the son of Neriah did according to all that Jeremiah the prophet commanded him, (AY)reading from the book the words of Yahweh in the house of Yahweh.

Now it happened in the (AZ)fifth year of Jehoiakim the son of Josiah, king of Judah, in the (BA)ninth month, that all the people in Jerusalem and all the people who (BB)came from the cities of Judah to Jerusalem called for a (BC)fast before Yahweh. 10 Then Baruch read from the book the words of Jeremiah in the house of Yahweh in the (BD)chamber of (BE)Gemariah the son of Shaphan the (BF)scribe, in the upper court, at the (BG)entry of the New Gate of the house of Yahweh, in the hearing of all the people.

11 Then (BH)Micaiah the son of Gemariah, the son of Shaphan, heard all the words of Yahweh from the book. 12 And he went down to the king’s house, into the scribe’s chamber. And behold, all the officials were sitting there—(BI)Elishama the scribe, and (BJ)Delaiah the son of Shemaiah, and (BK)Elnathan the son of Achbor, and Gemariah the son of Shaphan, and Zedekiah the son of Hananiah, and all the other officials. 13 And Micaiah (BL)declared to them all the words that he had heard when Baruch read from the book in the hearing of the people. 14 Then all the officials sent (BM)Jehudi the son of Nethaniah, the son of Shelemiah, the son of Cushi, to Baruch, saying, “Take in your hand the scroll from which you have read in the hearing of the people and come.” So Baruch the son of Neriah (BN)took the scroll in his hand and went to them. 15 And they said to him, “Sit down, please, and read it in our hearing.” So Baruch (BO)read it in their hearing. 16 Now it happened that when they heard all the words, they turned in (BP)dread one to another and said to Baruch, “We will surely (BQ)declare all these words to the king.” 17 And they asked Baruch, saying, “Declare to us, please, (BR)how did you write all these words? Was it [k]at his dictation?” 18 Then Baruch said to them, “He (BS)dictated all these words to me, and I wrote them with ink on the book.” 19 Then the officials said to Baruch, “Go, (BT)hide yourself, you and Jeremiah, and do not let anyone know where you are.”

The Scroll Is Burned

20 So they went to the (BU)king in the court, but they had deposited the scroll in the chamber of (BV)Elishama the scribe, and they declared all the words in the hearing of the king. 21 Then the king sent Jehudi to get the scroll, and he took it out of the chamber of Elishama the scribe. And Jehudi (BW)read it in the hearing of the king as well as in the hearing of all the officials who stood beside the king. 22 Now the king was sitting in the (BX)winter house in the (BY)ninth month, with a fire burning in the brazier before him. 23 And it happened that when Jehudi had read three or four columns, the king cut it with a scribe’s knife and (BZ)threw it into the fire that was in the brazier, until all the scroll [l]was consumed in the fire that was in the brazier. 24 Yet the king and all his servants who heard all these words were (CA)not in dread, nor did they (CB)tear their garments. 25 Even though Elnathan and Delaiah and Gemariah (CC)interceded with the king not to burn the scroll, he would not listen to them. 26 And the king commanded Jerahmeel the king’s son, Seraiah the son of Azriel, and Shelemiah the son of Abdeel to (CD)take Baruch the scribe and Jeremiah the prophet, but (CE)Yahweh hid them.

The Scroll Is Replaced

27 Then the word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah after the king had (CF)burned the scroll and the words which (CG)Baruch had written at the dictation of Jeremiah, saying, 28 (CH)Take again another scroll and write on it all the former words that were (CI)on the first scroll which Jehoiakim the king of Judah burned. 29 And concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah you shall say, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You have (CJ)burned this scroll, saying, ‘(CK)Why have you written on it [m]that the (CL)king of Babylon will certainly come and make this land a ruin and will make man and beast to cease from it?’” 30 Therefore thus says Yahweh concerning Jehoiakim king of Judah, “He shall have (CM)no one to sit on the throne of David, and his (CN)dead body shall be cast out to the heat of the day and the frost of the night. 31 And I will also (CO)punish him and his seed and his servants for their iniquity, and I will (CP)bring on them and the inhabitants of Jerusalem and the men of Judah all the evil that I have spoken about to them—but they did not listen.”’”

32 Then Jeremiah took another scroll and gave it to Baruch the son of Neriah, the scribe, and he (CQ)wrote on it at the dictation of Jeremiah all the words of the book which Jehoiakim king of Judah had burned in the fire; and many [n]similar words were added to them.

1 Timothy 5

Honor Widows

(A)Do not sharply rebuke an (B)older man, but rather plead with him as a father, to (C)the younger men as brothers, the older women as mothers, and the younger women as sisters, in all purity.

Honor widows who are (D)widows indeed, but if any widow has children or grandchildren, (E)they must first learn to practice piety in regard to their own family and to [a]make some return to their parents; for this is (F)acceptable in the sight of God. Now she who is a (G)widow indeed and who has been left alone, (H)has fixed her hope on God and continues in (I)petitions and prayers night and day. But she who (J)lives in self-indulgence is (K)dead even while she lives. (L)And command these things as well, so that they may be above reproach. But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his household, he has (M)denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

A widow is to be (N)put on the list only if she is not less than sixty years old, having been (O)the wife of one man, 10 having a reputation for (P)good works; if she has brought up children, if she has (Q)shown hospitality to strangers, if she (R)has washed the [b]saints’ feet, if she has (S)assisted those in affliction, if she has devoted herself to every good work. 11 But refuse to put younger widows on the list, for when they feel (T)sensual desires in disregard of Christ, they want to get married, 12 thus incurring condemnation, because they have set aside their previous [c]pledge. 13 And at the same time they also learn to be idle, as they go around from house to house. And not merely idle, but also (U)gossips and (V)busybodies, talking about (W)things not proper to mention. 14 Therefore, I want younger widows to get (X)married, bear children, (Y)keep house, and (Z)give the enemy no opportunity for reviling, 15 for some (AA)have already turned aside after (AB)Satan. 16 If any believing woman (AC)has widows, she must (AD)assist them and the church must not be burdened, so that it may assist those who are (AE)widows indeed.

Honoring the Elders

17 (AF)The elders who (AG)lead well are to be considered worthy of double honor, especially those who (AH)labor [d]at preaching the word and teaching. 18 For the Scripture says, “(AI)You shall not muzzle the ox while it is threshing,” and “(AJ)The laborer is worthy of his wages.” 19 Do not receive an accusation against an (AK)elder except on the basis of (AL)two or three witnesses. 20 Those who continue in sin, (AM)reprove in the presence of all, (AN)so that the rest also will be fearful. 21 (AO)I solemnly charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus and of His elect angels, to observe these instructions without bias, doing nothing in partiality. 22 (AP)Do not lay hands upon anyone hastily and [e]thereby share (AQ)responsibility for the sins of others; keep yourself pure.

23 No longer drink water only, but (AR)use a little wine for the sake of your stomach and your frequent ailments.

24 The sins of some men are quite evident, going before them to judgment; for others, their sins (AS)follow after. 25 So also good works are quite evident, and (AT)those which are otherwise cannot be concealed.

Psalm 89:14-37

14 (A)Righteousness and justice are the foundation of Your throne;
(B)Lovingkindness and [a]truth go before You.
15 How blessed are the people who know the (C)loud shout of joy!
O Yahweh, they walk in the (D)light of Your face.
16 In (E)Your name they rejoice all the day,
And by Your righteousness they are exalted.
17 For You are the beauty of (F)their strength,
And by Your favor [b]our (G)horn is exalted.
18 For our (H)shield belongs to Yahweh,
[c]And our king to the (I)Holy One of Israel.

19 Formerly You spoke in vision to Your [d]holy [e]ones,
And said, “I have bestowed help to a (J)mighty one;
I have exalted one (K)chosen from the people.
20 I have (L)found David My [f]servant;
With My holy (M)oil I have anointed him,
21 With whom (N)My hand will be established;
My arm also will (O)strengthen him.
22 The enemy will not [g]deceive him,
Nor the [h](P)son of unrighteousness afflict him.
23 But I shall (Q)crush his adversaries before him,
And strike those who hate him.
24 My (R)faithfulness and My lovingkindness will be with him,
And in My name his (S)horn will be exalted.
25 I shall also set his hand (T)on the sea
And his right hand on the rivers.
26 He will call to Me, ‘You are (U)my Father,
My God, and the (V)rock of my salvation.’
27 I also shall make him My (W)firstborn,
The (X)highest of the kings of the earth.
28 My (Y)lovingkindness I will keep for him forever,
And My (Z)covenant shall be confirmed to him.
29 So I will set up his (AA)seed to endure forever
And his (AB)throne (AC)as the days of heaven.

30 “If his sons (AD)forsake My law
And do not walk in My judgments,
31 If they profane My statutes
And do not keep My commandments,
32 Then I will punish their transgression with the (AE)rod
And their iniquity with striking.
33 But I will not break off (AF)My lovingkindness from him,
Nor deal falsely in My faithfulness.
34 My (AG)covenant I will not profane,
Nor will I (AH)alter what comes forth from My lips.
35 [i]Once I have (AI)sworn by My holiness;
I will not lie to David.
36 His (AJ)seed shall endure forever
And his (AK)throne (AL)as the sun before Me.
37 It shall be established forever (AM)like the moon,
And the (AN)witness in the sky is faithful.” [j]Selah.

Proverbs 25:25-27

25 Like cold water to a weary soul,
So is a (A)good report from a distant land.
26 Like a (B)muddied spring and a corrupted well
Is a righteous man shaking before the wicked.
27 To eat too much honey is not good,
Nor is it glory to (C)search out [a]one’s own glory.
