Jeremiah 28-29

Hananiah’s Rebellion Against Yahweh

28 Now it happened in the same year, (A)in the beginning of the reign of (B)Zedekiah king of Judah, in the fourth year, in the fifth month, that (C)Hananiah the son of Azzur, the prophet, who was from (D)Gibeon, spoke to me in the house of Yahweh in the sight of the priests and all the people, saying, (E)Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘I have broken the yoke of the king of Babylon. Within two years I am going to return to this place (F)all the vessels of the house of Yahweh, which Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon took away from this place and carried to Babylon. I am (G)also going to return to this place (H)Jeconiah the son of Jehoiakim, king of Judah, and all the (I)exiles of Judah who went to Babylon,’ declares Yahweh, ‘for I will break the (J)yoke of the king of Babylon.’”

Then the prophet Jeremiah spoke to the prophet Hananiah in the sight of the priests and in the sight of all the people who were standing in the (K)house of Yahweh, and the prophet Jeremiah said, “(L)Amen! May Yahweh do so; may Yahweh establish your words which you have prophesied to return the vessels of the house of Yahweh and all the exiles, from Babylon to this place. Yet (M)hear now this word which I am about to speak in your hearing and in the hearing of all the people! The prophets who were before me and before you from ancient times (N)prophesied against many lands and against great kingdoms, of war and of calamity and of pestilence. The prophet who prophesies of peace, (O)when the word of the prophet comes to pass, then that prophet will be known as one whom Yahweh has truly sent.”

10 Then Hananiah the prophet took (P)the bar of the yoke from the neck of Jeremiah the prophet and broke it. 11 And Hananiah spoke in the sight of all the people, saying, “(Q)Thus says Yahweh, ‘Even so will I break within two full years the yoke of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.’” Then the prophet Jeremiah went his way.

12 Then the (R)word of Yahweh came to Jeremiah after Hananiah the prophet had broken the bar of the yoke from off the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, saying, 13 “Go and speak to Hananiah, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh, “You have broken the bars of a yoke made of wood, but you have made in their place the (S)bars of a yoke made of iron.” 14 For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, “I have put a (T)yoke of iron on the neck of all these nations, that they may serve Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and they will (U)serve him. And (V)I have even given him the beasts of the field.”’” 15 Then Jeremiah the prophet said to Hananiah the prophet, “Listen now, Hananiah, Yahweh has not sent you, and (W)you have made this people trust in a lie. 16 Therefore thus says Yahweh, ‘(X)Behold, I am about to [a]remove you from the face of the earth. This year you are going to (Y)die because you have (Z)spoken rebellion against Yahweh.’”

17 So Hananiah the prophet died in the same year in the seventh month.

Jeremiah’s Letter to the Exiles

29 Now these are the words of the (AA)letter which Jeremiah the prophet sent from Jerusalem to the rest of the elders of the exile, the priests, the prophets, and all the people whom Nebuchadnezzar had taken away into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon. (This was after King (AB)Jeconiah and the (AC)queen mother, the court officials, the princes of Judah and Jerusalem, the craftsmen, and the smiths had gone out from Jerusalem.) The letter was sent by the hand of Elasah the son of Shaphan and Gemariah the son of (AD)Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, saying, “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have (AE)sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon, (AF)Build houses and live in them; and plant gardens and eat their fruit. Take (AG)wives and [b]become the fathers of sons and daughters, and take wives for your sons and give your daughters to husbands, that they may bear sons and daughters; and multiply there and do not decrease. (AH)Seek the peace of the city where I have sent you into exile, and (AI)pray to Yahweh on its behalf; for in its peace you will have peace.’ For thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Do not let your (AJ)prophets who are in your midst and your diviners (AK)deceive you, and do not listen to (AL)your dreams which you dream. For they (AM)prophesy a lie to you in My name; (AN)I have not sent them,’ declares Yahweh.

10 “For thus says Yahweh, ‘When (AO)seventy years have been fulfilled for Babylon, I will [c]visit you and establish My (AP)good word to you, to return you to this place. 11 For I know the (AQ)plans that I [d]have for you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘plans for (AR)peace and not for calamity, to give you a future and a (AS)hope. 12 Then you will (AT)call upon Me and come and pray to Me, and I will (AU)listen to you. 13 You will (AV)seek Me and find Me when you (AW)search for Me with all your heart. 14 I will be (AX)found by you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘and I will [e](AY)return your [f]fortunes and will (AZ)gather you from all the nations and from all the places where I have banished you,’ declares Yahweh, ‘and I will (BA)cause you to return to the place from where I sent you into exile.’

15 “Because you have said, ‘Yahweh has raised up (BB)prophets for us in Babylon’— 16 for thus says Yahweh concerning the king who sits on the throne of David and concerning all the people who live in this city, your brothers who did (BC)not go with you into exile— 17 thus says Yahweh of hosts, ‘Behold, I am sending upon them the (BD)sword, famine, and pestilence, and I will make them like (BE)split-open figs that cannot be eaten due to rottenness. 18 I will pursue them with the sword, with famine, and with pestilence; and I will (BF)give them over to be a terror to all the kingdoms of the earth, to be a (BG)curse and an object of horror and of (BH)hissing, and a reproach among all the nations where I have banished them, 19 because they have (BI)not listened to My words,’ declares Yahweh, ‘which I sent to them by (BJ)My slaves the prophets, rising up early and sending; but you did not listen,’ declares Yahweh. 20 You, therefore, hear the word of Yahweh, all you exiles, whom I have (BK)sent away from Jerusalem to Babylon.

21 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, concerning Ahab the son of Kolaiah and concerning Zedekiah the son of Maaseiah, who are (BL)prophesying to you falsely in My name, ‘Behold, I will give them into the hand of Nebuchadnezzar king of Babylon, and he will strike them down before your eyes. 22 And because of them a (BM)curse will be [g]used by all the exiles from Judah who are in Babylon, saying, “May Yahweh make you like Zedekiah and like Ahab, whom the king of Babylon (BN)roasted in the fire 23 because they have (BO)acted with wicked foolishness in Israel and (BP)have committed adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have (BQ)spoken words in My name falsely, which I did not command them; and I am He who (BR)knows and am a witness,” declares Yahweh.’”

24 And to (BS)Shemaiah the Nehelamite you shall speak, saying, 25 “Thus says Yahweh of hosts, the God of Israel, ‘Because you have sent (BT)letters in your own name to all the people who are in Jerusalem and to (BU)Zephaniah the son of Maaseiah, the priest, and to all the priests, saying, 26 “Yahweh has given you to be a priest instead of Jehoiada the priest, to be the [h](BV)overseer in the house of Yahweh over every (BW)madman who (BX)prophesies, to (BY)put him in the stocks and in the iron collar, 27 so now, why have you not rebuked Jeremiah of (BZ)Anathoth who prophesies to you? 28 For he has (CA)sent to us in Babylon, saying, ‘The exile will be (CB)long; (CC)build houses and live in them and plant gardens and eat their fruit.’”’”

29 (CD)So Zephaniah the priest read this letter in the hearing of Jeremiah the prophet. 30 Then came the word of Yahweh to Jeremiah, saying, 31 “Send to (CE)all the exiles, saying, ‘Thus says Yahweh concerning (CF)Shemaiah the Nehelamite, “Because Shemaiah has (CG)prophesied to you, although I did not send him, and he has (CH)made you trust in a lie,” 32 therefore thus says Yahweh, “Behold, I am about to (CI)punish Shemaiah the Nehelamite and his seed; he will (CJ)not have anyone living among this people, (CK)and he will not see the good that I am about to do to My people,” declares Yahweh, “because he has (CL)spoken rebellion against Yahweh.”’”

1 Timothy 1

Instructions in Doctrine and Living

Paul, (A)an apostle of (B)Christ Jesus (C)according to the commandment of (D)God our Savior, and of (E)Christ Jesus, our (F)hope,

To (G)Timothy, (H)my genuine child in the faith: (I)Grace, mercy, and peace from God the Father and (J)Christ Jesus our Lord.

As I exhorted you when going to (K)Macedonia, [a]remain on at (L)Ephesus so that you may command certain ones not to (M)teach a different doctrine, nor to [b]pay attention to (N)myths and endless (O)genealogies, which give rise to mere (P)speculation rather than furthering (Q)the stewardship from God which is by faith. But the goal of our (R)command is love (S)from a pure heart and a (T)good conscience and an unhypocritical (U)faith. For some, straying from these things, have turned aside to (V)fruitless discussion, (W)wanting to be (X)teachers of the Law, even though they do not understand either what they are saying or the matters about which they make confident assertions.

But we know that (Y)the Law is good, if one uses it lawfully, knowing this, that (Z)law is not made for a righteous person, but for those who are lawless and (AA)rebellious, for the (AB)ungodly and sinners, for the unholy and (AC)godless, for those who kill their fathers or mothers, for murderers, 10 for (AD)sexually immoral persons, for (AE)homosexuals, for (AF)kidnappers, for (AG)liars, for (AH)perjurers, and whatever else is contrary to (AI)sound teaching, 11 according to (AJ)the gospel of the glory of (AK)the blessed God, with which I have been (AL)entrusted.

12 I am grateful to (AM)Christ Jesus our Lord, who has (AN)strengthened me, because He regarded me faithful, (AO)putting me into service, 13 even though I was formerly a blasphemer and a (AP)persecutor and a violent aggressor. Yet I was (AQ)shown mercy because (AR)I acted ignorantly in unbelief; 14 and the (AS)grace of our Lord was more than abundant, with the (AT)faith and love which are in Christ Jesus. 15 (AU)It is a trustworthy saying and deserving full acceptance: that (AV)Christ Jesus came into the world to (AW)save sinners, among whom (AX)I am foremost. 16 Yet for this reason I (AY)was shown mercy, so that in me as the foremost, Christ Jesus might (AZ)demonstrate all His patience as an example for those [c]who are going to believe upon Him for eternal life. 17 Now to the (BA)King of the [d]ages, (BB)immortal, (BC)invisible, the (BD)only God, (BE)be honor and glory [e]forever and ever. Amen.

18 This (BF)command I entrust to you, Timothy, (BG)my child, in accordance with the (BH)prophecies previously made concerning you, that by them you may (BI)fight the good fight, 19 keeping (BJ)faith and a good conscience, which some, having rejected, suffered shipwreck in regard to [f](BK)their faith. 20 [g]Among these are (BL)Hymenaeus and (BM)Alexander, whom I have (BN)handed over to Satan, so that they will be (BO)taught not to blaspheme.

Psalm 86

To You, O Lord, I Lift Up My Soul

A Prayer of David.

86 (A)Incline Your ear, O Yahweh, and answer me;
For I am (B)afflicted and needy.
(C)Keep my [a]soul, for I am a (D)holy one;
O You my God, save Your slave who (E)trusts in You.
Be (F)gracious to me, O Lord,
For (G)to You I call all day long.
Make glad the soul of Your slave,
For to You, O Lord, (H)I lift up my soul.
For You, Lord, are (I)good, and (J)by nature forgiving,
And (K)abundant in lovingkindness to all who call upon You.
(L)Give ear, O Yahweh, to my prayer;
And give heed to the voice of my supplications!
In (M)the day of my distress I shall call upon You,
For (N)You will answer me.
There is (O)no one like You among the gods, O Lord,
Nor are there any works (P)like Yours.
(Q)All nations whom You have made shall come and worship before You, O Lord,
And they shall glorify Your name.
10 For You are (R)great and (S)do [b]wondrous deeds;
You alone (T)are God.

11 (U)Teach me Your way, O Yahweh;
I will walk in Your truth;
(V)Unite my heart to fear Your name.
12 I will (W)give thanks to You, O Lord my God, with all my heart,
And will glorify Your name forever.
13 For Your lovingkindness toward me is great,
And You have (X)delivered my soul from Sheol below.

14 O God, arrogant men have (Y)risen up against me,
And [c]a band of ruthless men have sought my [d]life,
And they have not set You before them.
15 But You, O Lord, are a God (Z)compassionate and gracious,
Slow to anger and abundant in lovingkindness and [e]truth.
16 (AA)Turn to me, and be gracious to me;
Oh (AB)grant Your strength to Your slave,
And save the (AC)son of Your maidservant.
17 [f](AD)Show me a sign for good,
That those who hate me may (AE)see it and be ashamed,
Because You, O Yahweh, (AF)have helped me and comforted me.

Proverbs 25:17

17 Let your foot rarely be in your neighbor’s house,
Lest he have more than his fill of you and hate you.
