Israel Chastised
6 “(A)Come, let us return to Yahweh.
For (B)He has torn us, but (C)He will heal us;
He has struck us, but He will (D)bandage us.
2 He will (E)make us alive after two days;
He will (F)raise us up on the third day,
That we may live before Him.
3 So let us (G)know, let us pursue to know Yahweh.
His (H)going forth is established as the dawn;
And He will come to us like the (I)rain,
Like the [a]late rain watering the earth.”
4 What shall I do with you, O (J)Ephraim?
What shall I do with you, O Judah?
For your lovingkindness is like a (K)morning cloud
And like the dew which goes away early.
5 Therefore I have (L)hewn them in pieces by the prophets;
I have killed them by the (M)words of My mouth;
And the judgments on you are like the light that goes forth.
6 For (N)I delight in lovingkindness (O)rather than sacrifice,
And in the knowledge of God rather than burnt offerings.
7 But (P)like [b]Adam they have (Q)trespassed against the covenant;
There they have (R)dealt treacherously against Me.
8 (S)Gilead is a city of workers of iniquity,
With a track of (T)blood.
9 And as (U)raiders wait for a man,
So a band of priests (V)murder on the way to Shechem;
Surely they have committed (W)lewdness.
10 In the house of Israel I have seen an (X)appalling thing;
Ephraim’s (Y)harlotry is there; Israel has defiled itself.
11 Also, O Judah, there is a (Z)harvest set for you
When I (AA)restore the fortunes of My people,
7 When I (AB)would heal Israel,
Then the iniquity of Ephraim is uncovered,
And the evil deeds of Samaria,
For they work (AC)falsehood;
The thief enters in;
(AD)Raiders [c]ransack outside,
2 And they do not say to their hearts
That I (AE)remember all their evil.
Now their (AF)deeds are all around them;
They are before My face.
3 (AG)With their evil they make the (AH)king glad,
And the princes with their (AI)deceptions.
4 They are (AJ)all adulterers,
Like an oven heated by the baker
Who ceases to stir up the fire
From the kneading of the dough until it is leavened.
5 On the [d]day of our king, the princes (AK)became sick with the heat of wine;
He stretched out his hand with (AL)scoffers,
6 For their hearts are like an (AM)oven
As they draw near in their [e]plotting;
Their [f]anger [g]smolders all night;
In the morning it burns like a flaming fire.
7 All of them are hot like an oven,
And they devour their (AN)judges;
All their kings have fallen.
(AO)None of them calls on Me.
8 Ephraim (AP)mixes himself with the peoples;
Ephraim has become a cake not turned.
9 (AQ)Strangers devour his power,
Yet he (AR)does not know it;
Gray hairs also are sprinkled on him,
Yet he does not know it.
10 So the (AS)pride of Israel answers against him,
Yet (AT)they have not returned to Yahweh their God,
Nor have they sought Him, for all this.
11 So (AU)Ephraim has become like a silly dove, (AV)without a heart of wisdom;
They call to (AW)Egypt; they go to (AX)Assyria.
12 When they go, I will (AY)spread My net over them;
I will bring them down like the birds of the sky.
I will (AZ)chastise them in accordance with the report to their congregation.
13 (BA)Woe to them, for they have (BB)fled from Me!
Destruction is theirs, for they have transgressed against Me!
And I (BC)would redeem them, but they speak lies against Me.
14 And (BD)they do not cry out to Me in their heart
When they wail on their beds;
For the sake of grain and new wine they [h](BE)gather together as sojourners;
They (BF)depart from Me.
15 Although I disciplined and strengthened their arms,
Yet they (BG)devise evil against Me.
16 They turn, but not [i]upward;
They are like a (BH)deceitful bow;
Their princes will fall by the sword
Because of the [j](BI)indignation of their tongue.
This will be their (BJ)scoffing in the land of Egypt.
Israel Reaps the Whirlwind
8 (BK)Put the trumpet to your [k]mouth!
(BL)Like an eagle the enemy comes (BM)against the house of Yahweh
Because they have (BN)trespassed against My covenant
And transgressed against My (BO)law.
2 (BP)They cry out to Me,
“My God, (BQ)we of Israel know You!”
3 Israel has rejected the good;
The enemy will pursue him.
4 (BR)They have set up kings, but not by Me;
They have appointed princes, but I did not know it.
With their (BS)silver and gold they have made idols for themselves,
That [l]they might be cut off.
5 [m]He has rejected your (BT)calf, O Samaria, saying,
“My anger burns against them!”
How long will they be incapable of (BU)innocence?
6 For from Israel is even this!
A (BV)craftsman made it, so it is not God;
Surely the calf of Samaria will be smashed to splinters.
7 For (BW)they sow the wind,
And they reap the (BX)whirlwind.
The standing grain has no growth;
It makes (BY)no flour.
Should it make anything, strangers would swallow it up.
8 Israel is (BZ)swallowed up;
They are now among the nations
Like a (CA)vessel in which no one delights.
9 For they have gone up to (CB)Assyria
Like (CC)a wild donkey all alone;
Ephraim has (CD)hired [n]lovers.
10 Even though they hire allies among the nations,
Now I will (CE)gather them up;
And they will begin (CF)to [o]diminish
Because of the burden of the (CG)king of princes.
11 Since Ephraim has (CH)multiplied altars for sin,
They have become altars of sinning for him.
12 Though (CI)I wrote for him ten thousand precepts of My (CJ)law,
They are counted as a strange thing.
13 As for My (CK)sacrificial gifts,
They (CL)sacrifice the flesh and eat it,
But Yahweh has not accepted them.
Now He will (CM)remember their iniquity
And (CN)punish them for their sins;
They will return to (CO)Egypt.
14 So Israel has (CP)forgotten his Maker and (CQ)built palaces;
And Judah has multiplied fortified cities,
But I will send a (CR)fire on its cities that it may consume its palatial dwellings.
Days of Punishment Have Come
9 (CS)Do not be glad, O Israel, [p]with rejoicing like the peoples!
For you have (CT)played the harlot, [q]forsaking your God.
You have loved harlots’ earnings on [r]every threshing floor.
2 Threshing floor and wine press will (CU)not feed them,
And the new wine will deceive [s]them.
3 They will not remain in (CV)the land of Yahweh,
But Ephraim will return to (CW)Egypt,
And in (CX)Assyria they will eat (CY)unclean food.
4 They will not pour out drink offerings of (CZ)wine to Yahweh;
(DA)Their sacrifices will not please Him.
Their bread will [t]be like [u]mourners’ bread;
All who eat of it will be (DB)defiled,
For their bread will be for [v]themselves alone;
It will not enter the house of Yahweh.
5 (DC)What will you do on the day of the appointed festival
And on the day of the (DD)feast of Yahweh?
6 For behold, they will go because of destruction;
Egypt will gather them up; (DE)Memphis will bury them.
Weeds will possess their desirable items of silver;
(DF)Thorns will be in their tents.
7 The days of (DG)punishment have come;
The days of (DH)recompense have come;
[w]Let Israel know this!
The prophet is an (DI)ignorant fool,
The [x]inspired man has (DJ)madness,
Because of the abundance of your (DK)iniquity
And because your hostility has abounded.
8 Ephraim was a watchman with my God, a prophet;
Yet the snare of a bird catcher is in all his ways,
And there is only hostility in the house of his God.
9 They have dug (DL)deep [y]in corruption
As in the days of (DM)Gibeah;
He will (DN)remember their iniquity;
He will punish their sins.
Grapes in the Wilderness
10 I found Israel like (DO)grapes in the wilderness;
I saw your fathers as the (DP)earliest fruit on the fig tree in its first season.
But they came to (DQ)Baal-peor and devoted themselves to [z](DR)shame,
And they became as (DS)detestable as that which they loved.
11 As for Ephraim, their (DT)glory will fly away like a bird—
No birth, no pregnancy, and no conception!
12 Though they bring up their children,
Yet I will bereave them [aa]until not a man is left.
Surely, (DU)woe to them indeed when I depart from them!
13 Ephraim, as I have seen,
Is planted in a pasture like (DV)Tyre;
But Ephraim will bring out his children for killing.
14 Give them, O Yahweh—what will You give?
Give them a [ab](DW)miscarrying womb and dry breasts.
15 All their evil is at (DX)Gilgal;
Indeed, I came to hate them there!
Because of the (DY)evil of their deeds
I will drive them out of My house!
I will love them no more;
All their princes are (DZ)rebels.
16 (EA)Ephraim is stricken; their root is dried up;
They will bear (EB)no fruit.
Even though they bear children,
I will put to death the (EC)desirable ones of their womb.
17 My God will despise them
Because they have (ED)not listened to Him;
And they will be (EE)those who flee among the nations.
Walking in the Truth
1 (A)The elder to the beloved (B)Gaius, whom I (C)love in truth.
2 Beloved, I pray that in all respects you may prosper and be in good health, just as your soul prospers. 3 For I (D)rejoiced greatly when (E)brothers came and bore witness to your truth, that is, how you (F)are walking in truth. 4 I have no greater joy than [a]this, to hear that (G)my children are (H)walking in the truth.
5 Beloved, you are acting faithfully in whatever [b]work you do for the (I)brothers, and are doing this though they are (J)strangers; 6 and they bore witness to your love before the church. You will do well to (K)send them on their way in a manner (L)worthy of God. 7 For they went out for the sake of (M)the Name, (N)receiving nothing from the Gentiles. 8 Therefore we ought to [c]support such men, so that we may [d]be fellow workers [e]with the truth.
9 I wrote something to the church, but Diotrephes, who loves to (O)be first among them, does not welcome [f]what we say. 10 For this reason, (P)if I come, I will bring to remembrance his deeds which he does, unjustly disparaging us with wicked words. And not satisfied with this, he himself does not (Q)welcome the (R)brothers either, and he forbids those who want to do so and (S)puts them out of the church.
11 Beloved, (T)do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. (U)The one who does good is of God; (V)the one who does evil has not seen God. 12 Demetrius (W)has received a good witness from everyone, and from the truth itself; and we add our witness, and (X)you know that our witness is true.
13 (Y)I had many things to write to you, but I am not willing to write them to you with pen and ink; 14 but I hope to see you shortly, and we will speak face to face.
15 (Z)Peace be to you. The friends greet you. Greet the friends (AA)by name.
Those Who Sow in Tears Shall Reap with Joy
A Song of Ascents.
126 When Yahweh [a](A)returned [b]the captive ones of Zion,
We were (B)like those who dream.
2 Then our (C)mouth was filled with laughter
And our (D)tongue with shouts of joy;
Then they said among the nations,
“Yahweh has (E)done great things for them.”
3 Yahweh has done great things for us;
We are (F)glad.
