Hosea 10-14

You Have Sinned, O Israel

10 Israel is a [a]luxuriant (A)vine;
He produces fruit for himself.
The more abundant his fruit,
The more altars he (B)abounded;
The better his land,
The better [b]he made the sacred (C)pillars.
Their heart is [c](D)faithless;
Now they must bear their (E)guilt.
[d]Yahweh will (F)break down their altars
And destroy their sacred pillars.

Surely now they will say, “We have (G)no king,
For we do not fear Yahweh.
As for the king, what can he do for us?”
They speak mere words;
[e]With (H)worthless oaths they cut covenants;
And (I)judgment flourishes like gall in the furrows of the field.
The dweller of Samaria will fear
For the [f](J)calf of (K)Beth-aven.
Indeed, its people will mourn for it,
And its (L)idolatrous priests [g]will cry out over it,
Over its (M)glory, since it has gone into exile from them.
The thing itself will be carried to (N)Assyria
As tribute to [h](O)King Jareb;
Ephraim will (P)receive shame,
And Israel will be ashamed of its (Q)own counsel.
Samaria will be (R)ruined with her king
Like a stick on the surface of the water.
Also the (S)high places of Aven, the (T)sin of Israel, will be [i]eradicated;
(U)Thorn and thistle will grow on their altars;
Then they will (V)say to the mountains,
“Cover us!” And to the hills, “Fall on us!”
From the days of Gibeah you have sinned, O Israel;
There they stand!
Will not the battle against the sons of injustice overtake them in Gibeah?
10 When it is My (W)desire, I will [j](X)chastise them;
And (Y)the peoples will be gathered against them
When they are bound for their double guilt.

The Trained Heifer

11 And Ephraim is a trained (Z)heifer that loves to thresh,
But I will (AA)come over her fair neck with a yoke;
I will harness Ephraim;
Judah will plow; Jacob will harrow for himself.
12 (AB)Sow with a view to righteousness,
Reap in accordance with lovingkindness;
(AC)Break up your fallow ground,
Indeed, it is time to (AD)seek Yahweh
Until He (AE)comes and [k](AF)rains righteousness on you.
13 You have (AG)plowed wickedness; you have reaped injustice;
You have eaten the fruit of (AH)deception.
Because you have trusted in your way, in your (AI)abundant warriors,
14 Therefore a rumbling will arise among your people,
And all your (AJ)fortifications will be destroyed,
As Shalman destroyed Beth-arbel on the day of battle,
When (AK)mothers were dashed in pieces with their children.
15 Thus it will be done to you at Bethel because of your evil of evils.
At dawn the king of Israel will be completely ruined.

The Beloved Son

11 When Israel was a youth I loved him,
And (AL)out of Egypt I (AM)called My son.
The more [l](AN)they called them,
The more they went from [m]them;
They kept (AO)sacrificing to the Baals
And (AP)burning incense to graven images.
Yet it is I who taught Ephraim to walk;
[n]I (AQ)took them in My arms;
But they did not know that I (AR)healed them.
I (AS)led them with cords of a man, with bonds of love,
And (AT)I became to them as one who lifts the yoke from their jaws;
And I bent down and (AU)fed them.

[o]They will not return to the land of Egypt;
But Assyria—he will be [p]their king
Because they (AV)refused to return to Me.
And the (AW)sword will whirl against [q]their cities
And will consume [r]their gate bars
And (AX)devour them because of their (AY)counsels.
So My people are hung up on (AZ)turning from Me.
Though [s]they call [t]them to the One on high,
None at all exalts Him.

(BA)How can I give you up, O Ephraim?
How can I surrender you, O Israel?
How can I give you over to be like (BB)Admah?
How can I make you like (BC)Zeboiim?
My heart is turned over within Me;
[u]All My compassions are stirred.
I will (BD)not execute My burning anger;
I will not make Ephraim a ruin (BE)again.
For (BF)I am God and not man, the (BG)Holy One in your midst,
And I will not come in [v]wrath.
10 They will (BH)walk after Yahweh;
He will (BI)roar like a lion;
Indeed, He will roar,
And His sons will come (BJ)trembling from the west.
11 They will come trembling like birds from (BK)Egypt
And like (BL)doves from the land of (BM)Assyria;
And I will (BN)settle them in their houses, declares Yahweh.

12 [w]Ephraim surrounds Me with [x](BO)lies
And the house of Israel with deceit;
And Judah is also unruly against God,
Even against the Holy One who is faithful.

12 [y]Ephraim feeds on (BP)wind
And pursues the (BQ)east wind continually;
He abounds in falsehood and destruction.
Moreover, [z]he cuts a covenant with Assyria,
And oil is carried to Egypt.

Yahweh’s Contention with Judah

And Yahweh has a (BR)contention with Judah
And will punish Jacob (BS)according to his ways;
He will cause everything to return to him according to his deeds.
In the womb he (BT)took his brother by the heel,
And in his maturity he [aa](BU)wrestled with God.
Indeed, he [ab]wrestled with the angel and prevailed;
He wept and (BV)sought His favor.
He found Him at (BW)Bethel,
And there He spoke with us,
Even Yahweh, the God of hosts,
Yahweh is His [ac](BX)name of remembrance.
Therefore, (BY)return to your God,
(BZ)Keep lovingkindness and justice,
And (CA)hope in your God continually.
A [ad]merchant, in whose hands are deceptive (CB)balances,
He loves to oppress.
And Ephraim said, “Surely I have become (CC)rich;
I have found wealth for myself;
In all my labors they will find in me
(CD)No iniquity, which would be sin.”
But I have been Yahweh your God since the land of Egypt;
I will make you (CE)settle in tents again,
As in the days of the appointed festival.
10 And I have spoken to the (CF)prophets,
And I [ae]made visions abound,
And by the hand of the prophets I gave (CG)parables.
11 Is there wickedness in Gilead?
Surely they are worthless.
In Gilgal they sacrifice bulls;
Yes, (CH)their altars are like the stone heaps
Beside the furrows of the field.

12 Now (CI)Jacob fled to the field of Aram,
And (CJ)Israel worked for a wife,
And for a wife he kept sheep.
13 But by a (CK)prophet Yahweh brought Israel up from Egypt,
And by a prophet he was kept.
14 (CL)Ephraim has provoked to bitter anger;
So his Lord will leave his (CM)bloodguilt on him
And cause his (CN)reproach to return to him.

Ephraim’s Idolatry

13 (CO)When Ephraim [af]spoke, there was trembling.
He (CP)lifted himself up in Israel,
But through (CQ)Baal he became guilty and died.
And now they sin more and more
And make for themselves (CR)molten images,
Idols (CS)made from their silver according to their understanding,
All of them the (CT)work of craftsmen.
They are saying of them, “Let the [ag]men who sacrifice kiss the (CU)calves!”
Therefore they will be like the (CV)morning cloud
And like dew which [ah]soon disappears,
Like (CW)chaff which is blown away from the threshing floor
And like (CX)smoke from a [ai]chimney.

Yet I have been (CY)Yahweh your God
Since the land of Egypt;
And you were not to know (CZ)any god except Me,
And there is no savior (DA)besides Me.
I Myself (DB)knew you in the wilderness,
(DC)In the land of drought.
As they had their pasture, then they became (DD)satisfied,
Indeed, they were satisfied, and their (DE)heart became raised up;
Therefore they (DF)forgot Me.
So I will be (DG)like a lion to them;
Like a (DH)leopard I will [aj]lie in wait by the wayside.
I will encounter them (DI)like a bear robbed of her cubs,
And I will tear open [ak]the chest enclosing their heart;
There I will also (DJ)devour them like a lioness,
As a beast of the field would rip them open.

It is your ruin, O Israel,
[al]That you are (DK)against Me, against your (DL)help.
10 Where now is your (DM)king,
That he may save you in all your cities,
And your (DN)judges of whom you said,
“Give me a king and princes”?
11 I (DO)gave you a king in My anger
And (DP)took him away in My wrath.

12 The iniquity of Ephraim is bound up;
His sin is (DQ)stored up.
13 The pains of (DR)childbirth come upon him;
He is (DS)not a wise son,
For [am]it is not the time that he should (DT)delay at the opening of the womb.
14 Shall I (DU)ransom them from the [an]power of Sheol?
Shall I redeem them from death?
(DV)O Death, where are your thorns?
O Sheol, where is your sting?
(DW)Compassion will be hidden from My sight.

15 Though he (DX)is fruitful among the [ao]reeds,
An (DY)east wind will come,
The wind of Yahweh coming up from the wilderness;
And his fountain will (DZ)become dry,
And his spring will be dried up;
It will (EA)plunder his treasury of every desirable article.
16 [ap]Samaria will be held (EB)guilty,
For she has (EC)rebelled against her God.
(ED)They will fall by the (EE)sword;
Their infants will be (EF)dashed in pieces,
And their pregnant (EG)women will be ripped open.

Yahweh’s Anger Turns Away from Israel

14 [aq](EH)Return, O Israel, to Yahweh your God,
For you have stumbled in your (EI)iniquity.
Take words with you and return to Yahweh.
Say to Him, “(EJ)Forgive all iniquity
And [ar]take what is good,
That we may (EK)pay in full [as]the fruit of our lips.
Assyria will not save us;
We will (EL)not ride on horses,
Nor will we say again, ‘(EM)Our god,’
To the (EN)work of our hands;
For in (EO)You the [at]orphan finds compassion.”

I will (EP)heal their turning away from Me;
I will (EQ)love them freely,
For My anger has (ER)turned away from them.
I will be like the (ES)dew to Israel;
He will flourish like the (ET)lily,
And he will [au]take root like the cedars of (EU)Lebanon.
His shoots will go forth,
And his splendor will be like the (EV)olive tree
And his fragrance like the cedars of (EW)Lebanon.
Those who (EX)live in his shadow
Will [av]again raise (EY)grain,
And they will flourish like the vine.
His name of remembrance will be like the wine of Lebanon.

O Ephraim, what more have I to do with (EZ)idols?
It is I who answer and look after [aw]you.
I am like a luxuriant (FA)cypress;
From (FB)Me [ax]comes your fruit.

(FC)Whoever is wise, so let him discern these things;
Whoever is discerning, let him know them.
For the (FD)ways of Yahweh are right,
And the (FE)righteous will walk in them,
But (FF)transgressors will stumble in them.

Jude

Contend Earnestly for the Faith

[a](A)Jude, a (B)slave of Jesus Christ, and brother of [b]James,

To (C)those who are the called, beloved in God the Father, and (D)kept for Jesus Christ: (E)May mercy and peace and love (F)be multiplied to you.

(G)Beloved, while I was making every effort to write you about our (H)common salvation, I felt the necessity to write to you exhorting that you (I)contend earnestly for (J)the faith which was once for all (K)handed down to (L)the [c]saints. For certain persons have (M)crept in unnoticed, those who were long beforehand [d](N)marked out for this condemnation, ungodly persons who turn (O)the grace of our God into (P)sensuality and (Q)deny our only Master and Lord, Jesus Christ.

Now I want to (R)remind you, though (S)you know all things, that [e]Jesus, (T)having once saved a people out of the land of Egypt, [f]subsequently destroyed those who did not believe. And (U)angels who did not keep their own domain, but abandoned their proper abode, He has (V)kept in eternal bonds under darkness for the judgment of the great day, just as (W)Sodom and Gomorrah and the (X)cities around them, having indulged in the same way as these in gross sexual immorality and having (Y)gone after [g]strange flesh, are exhibited as an [h](Z)example in undergoing the (AA)punishment of eternal fire.

Yet in the same way these men, also by dreaming, (AB)defile the flesh, and reject authority, and blaspheme [i]glorious ones. But (AC)Michael (AD)the archangel, when he, disputing with the devil, was arguing about (AE)the body of Moses, did not dare pronounce against him a blasphemous judgment, but said, “(AF)The Lord rebuke you!” 10 But (AG)these men blaspheme the things which they do not understand; and (AH)the things which they know by instinct, (AI)like unreasoning animals, by these things they are [j]destroyed. 11 Woe to them! For they have gone (AJ)the way of Cain, and for pay they have poured themselves into (AK)the error of Balaam, and (AL)perished in the rebellion of Korah. 12 These are the men who are [k]hidden reefs (AM)in your love feasts when they feast with you (AN)without fear, caring for themselves; (AO)clouds without water, (AP)carried along by winds; autumn trees without fruit, [l]doubly dead, (AQ)uprooted; 13 (AR)wild waves of the sea, casting up (AS)their own [m]shame like foam; wandering stars, (AT)for whom the [n]black darkness has been reserved forever.

14 But (AU)Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, also prophesied about these men, saying, “(AV)Behold, the Lord came with [o]many thousands of His holy ones, 15 (AW)to execute judgment upon all, and to convict all the ungodly of all their ungodly deeds which they have done in an ungodly way, and of all the harsh things which (AX)ungodly sinners have spoken against Him.” 16 These are (AY)grumblers, finding fault, (AZ)following after their own lusts; and their mouth speaks (BA)arrogantly, [p]flattering people (BB)for the sake of their own benefit.

Keep Yourselves in the Love of God

17 But you, (BC)beloved, (BD)must remember the words that were spoken beforehand by (BE)the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ, 18 that they were saying to you, “(BF)In the last time there will be mockers, (BG)following after their own ungodly lusts.” 19 These are the ones who cause divisions, [q](BH)worldly-minded, not having the Spirit. 20 But you, (BI)beloved, (BJ)building yourselves up on your most holy (BK)faith, (BL)praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, (BM)waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ to eternal life. 22 And on some, who are doubting, have mercy; 23 and for others, save, (BN)snatching them out of the fire; and on others have mercy with fear, (BO)hating even the tunic polluted by the flesh.

24 (BP)Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling, and to (BQ)make you stand in the presence of His glory blameless with (BR)great joy, 25 to the (BS)only (BT)God our Savior, through Jesus Christ our Lord, (BU)be glory, majesty, might, and authority, (BV)before all time and now and [r]forever. Amen.

Psalm 127

Unless Yahweh Builds the House

A Song of Ascents. Of Solomon.

127 Unless Yahweh (A)builds the house,
They labor in vain who build it;
Unless Yahweh (B)watches the city,
The watchman keeps awake in vain.
It is in vain that you rise up early,
That you sit out late,
O you who (C)eat the bread of [a]painful labors;
For in this manner, He gives (D)sleep to His (E)beloved.

Behold, (F)children are [b]an inheritance of Yahweh,
The (G)fruit of the womb is a reward.
Like arrows in the hand of a (H)warrior,
So are the children of one’s youth.
How (I)blessed is the man who fills his quiver with them;
(J)They will not be ashamed
When they (K)speak with enemies (L)in the gate.

Proverbs 29:15-17

15 The (A)rod and reproof give wisdom,
But a child [a]left to himself (B)brings shame to his mother.
16 When the wicked [b]increase, transgression increases;
But the (C)righteous will see their fall.
17 (D)Discipline your son, and he will give you rest;
And he will (E)give delight to your soul.
